This is how I read scripture.
God elected, before the world was, whom He would save in Christ, refer to Ephesians 1 as an example and 1 Timothy 4 says before time began we were chosen to be saved.

Obviously, we did commit ourselves to the Lord, and obviously He chose us in Him before time began to believe in His Son.
