I'm interested in why they are effective for First Responders and not everyone else! The latest estimate is the masks are only 70% effective. If they were only 1% effective, a Government that cared about the people would have prescribed them.

Logically speaking, since it can be spread by droplets by speaking/sneezing/coughing, the place your face is covered is better protected. As for an n95 (95% filtration) aerosolized viral particles can still get through. A mask is just another tool in the toolbox. Social distancing, wiping down surfaces, washing hands and hand sanitizers all have their limits. It is criminal to put a stigma upon a person who wears latex gloves and mask in public. Just like toilet paper... those who have not get angry at those who were smart enough to be prepared, when they blew off their chance to get the supplies they needed.

Didn't do much good. You see, bubonic plague is spread mostly by fleas. The fleas prefer rodents, but if the rodents die off, they will bit humans, who will then get bubonic plague. Isolation, cleanliness, and lots of outdoor time were all useful.

Both of those were spread by mosquitoes. So draining or spraying oil on standing water (to kill or prevent mosquito larva) mosquito netting over beds, and use of quinine were successful. Unfortunately, none of those work with COVID-19.
