I had a Catholic roomie in college. His mom had a special contempt for what she called “non-denominationals”. I guess non-denoms were considered worse than Protestants.

And yet, 40 some years later, I would still have to consider him and his mom a brother and sister in Christ. The lack of reciprocity leaves me with a tinge of sadness.

My beloved biological father was a hard-core Catholic and was the same as the people you described. Of course he didn't have the benefit that we've derived from the vast amounts of theological information available via the internet. Although with him it likely wouldn't have mattered. He was definitely a Godly man.
