I've heard it was put together under Constantine's direction of the First Council of Nicea so that He could make christianity the official religion of Rome... but I've heard others say that's not true and it was put together by these people or that people.
If anyone can explain more to be about the Constantine idea.... whether your opinion of this is that it's true or false I'd appreciate hearing different opinions.
I personally have no real opinion because I don't know anything about it other than what I've heard other people say.
Keep in mind there are seven churches making up the one church...
1. Ephesus - Apostolic - Scripture still before us!.
2. Smyrna - Martyr - 10 days = 10 general Roman persecutions. Started by Nero
3. Pergomos - Orthodox - Started by Constantine in 312 AD.
4. Thyatira - Catholic - Started by Charlemagne in 800 AD. The first pope was Nicholas I in 858 AD
5. Sardis - Protestant - John Calvin / Martin Luther
6. Philadelphia - John Wesley
7. Laodicea - Materialistic / Charistmatic / Independent

In the image of king Nebuchadnezzar we find two legs of iron. This is the divided kingdom that started with Constantine with one leg representing the eastern Roman empire and the other the west. The western Roman empire would eventually become the Catholic church headquartered in Rome while the eastern Roman empire would eventually become the Greek Orthodox church located at Constantinople. It is important to note that the Pergamean church age was an Orthodox age. It It would take another 500 years for the Catholic church age to begin.
Note that the Eastern Roman empire officially began in 306 AD, just a few years before Constantine's victory and would last over a 1,000 years until the Ottomans defeated Constantinople in 1453 AD.
