That verse is not saying the old covenant ended with John
What ended was the law and prophets speaking about the kingdom at hand..................[Mat 11:13 KJV] 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Jesus didnt end the old covenant either........[Mat 5:17 KJV] 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Yes, they would not be made complete without us, ie, complete in Christ, like we are. Christ and His new covenant is that "something better", the promise that hadn't come for them yet. And if we can see it, this passage also lets us know that "we" and "they" are one....they are "not without us".

Yep, they are the referent of "the spirits of righteous men made perfect"--they were just, and in right standing with God, but they were not made perfect until the inauguration of the New Covenant, but they were waiting, because the blood of bulls and goats cannot take sins away, but men had been relying on blood sacrifice ever since Abel.

[Jhn 15:4 KJV] 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Jesus told the disciples to abide in him
Paul never tells this to the body
John happened before the body was even formed mid acts

Yeah, actually, he does : the ones who are "in Christ" have "no condemnation" (Ro 8:1), but the one who does not walk in faith "is condemned" (Ro 14:23)--meaning they are not abiding in Christ. Paul says "walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh"--he also critiques people who "do not hold fast to the head", etc, etc, etc.
There is so much cross-over of John's and Paul's doctrines, I don't know where to start.
