Jesus explicitly commanded His disciples to receive the Holy Ghost.

“He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost,” John 20:22.

Did they receive the Holy Ghost when He breathed on them? No. How do we know?

“The Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified,” John 7:39.

The Holy Ghost was not given until AFTER Jesus ascended into Heaven.

The Holy Ghost was given to them on the Day of Pentecost, in the Upper Room, and they all spoke in tongues when it happened. Read the entire chapter of Acts 2. It is extremely plain.

One of the very last things Jesus said to His disciples before ascending into Heaven was this:

"Accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior" ??? No!

“He that believeth AND IS BAPTIZED shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them …THEY SHALL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES,” Mark 16:16-17.

Jesus wants all believers to be filled with the Holy Ghost AND speak in other tongues.

Acts 1:4-5 – “[He] commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which …ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”

Jesus told them not to leave Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Ghost. THAT is why they tarried in the Upper Room for so many days until the Day of Pentecost.

In modern terms, we are obliged to understand Jesus' instructions. We must not continue in the ministry until we have been baptized in the Holy Ghost. No matter how involved you are in the ministry, Jesus' example showed that he did NOT want them to continue in the ministry UNTIL they received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost and spoke in unknown tongues. If you are in the ministry and do not yet have the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, you are out of order. Jesus put you under a "gag order." Silence until you receive it. You have not yet kept Jesus' commandment to receive the promise.

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance,” Acts 2:1-4

Multitudes of Jews in the city heard the noise, then discovered them speaking in languages they had never spoken before.

The ENTIRE Early Church received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. Every apostle and every disciple was Baptized in the Holy Ghost and spoke in other tongues. If you are in a Church that does not preach and practice the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, you have NO BIBLICAL PRECEDENT for such a congregation.

Peter took advantage of the crowd’s curiosity, and preached to them that day.

He told the multitudes,

“This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: … And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” Acts 2:16-21.

He boldly told them that it was JESUS who had “shed forth this, which ye now see and hear,” v. 33.

Peter told them that JESUS had given all these people the Holy Ghost. He told them that God had exalted Jesus – the same one they had just murdered - to sit on the Throne in Heaven.

Their consciences were pricked. They cried out, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

“Peter said unto them,

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost..."

Then Peter continued...

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls,” Acts 2:38-41.

The OUTPOURING of the Holy Ghost on the Day of Pentecost did not come unexpectedly.

Isaiah had prophesied, "With stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people," (28:11). Joel had prophesied it, too.

In this entire event, THREE ELEMENTS are clearly seen as a part of God’s salvation plan.

1. BLOOD - the blood of Jesus
2. WATER - the water of Baptism in Jesus’ name
3. SPIRIT - the Infilling of the Holy Ghost

These three elements COMBINE to make ONE ACT OF SALVATION.

John explained it. “There are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood:

AND THESE THREE AGREE IN ONE,” 1 John 5:8.

So there are three that bear witness in earth. Blood. Water. Spirit.

God chose three unique agents to work synergistically to redeem mankind. Each element is indispensable.

Every believer must be likewise born again.

DIE to sin and self by REPENTING (renouncing and turning from sin).

Be BURIED by immersion in water in the name of Jesus (thereby following the Lord in His burial).

And be RESURRECTED by being FILLED with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost IS eternal life.

So we see THREE ELEMENTS:

1. BLOOD of Jesus
2. WATER of baptism
3. SPIRIT infilling.

These three agree in one rebirth.

Paul said, “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” Hebrews 9:22 Your sins can never be remitted if not for the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus' blood can make the vilest sinner clean.

Peter said "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."

THE FIRST TIME YOUR SINS WILL EVER BE REMITTED IS THE MOMENT YOU ARE BAPTIZED BY FULL IMMERSION in the name of Jesus.

THAT is WHEN and WHERE your sins are buried!

BAPTISM IN JESUS NAME APPLIES THE BLOOD AND BURIES YOUR SINS.

Peter said, "...BE BAPTIZED every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS," Acts 2:38.

If blood can remit your sins without baptism, then there is no need for baptism.

Many people argue that baptism is not necessary to salvation. But that is not what Jesus said.

“He that believeth AND is baptized…” AND, He said, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God," John 3:5.

One can not be saved without WATER AND SPIRIT, Jesus explicitly said one CANNOT ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM without it.

When you obediently speak the NAME OF JESUS in water baptism, His blood is applied to your sins.

Want proof?

THAT is why ANANIAS told SAUL, “Why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord,” Acts 22:16.

What did he mean by that phrase, “WASH AWAY YOUR SINS, CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD”?

He meant that your sins are washed away when you call on the name of Jesus in water baptism.

If I was not already baptized, I would RUN to the baptistery as fast as I could run, and call on the name of the Lord Jesus for Him to remit my sins.

Every recorded baptism in the New Testament was done in the name of Jesus. It IS the correct way.

WHAT ABOUT MATTHEW 28:19?

Matthew 28:19 JESUS SAID: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, BAPTIZING them in the NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"

But NOT ONE EXAMPLE IS GIVEN in the entire New Testament of anyone actually being baptized in the TITLES “Father Son and Holy Ghost."

As you said, the only examples of baptism in Acts were always and only in the name of Jesus.

"Father" or "Spirit" were never even one time alluded to, but only "Jesus".

Modernists pretend that titles are sufficient, yet the early original church never mentioned titles upon baptisms.

They only said "Jesus".

I don't trust modernists.

Hi user - excellent topic!

In context;
...Scriptural Teaching IS:
1) The Spirit of God can be WITH a man.
2) The Spirit of God can be IN a man.

Ancient: OT 6,000+ years ago;
...Repeatedly Gods Spirit was WITH then NOT WITH men.
...We find WHY with, then WHY not with, is directly proportional to when men Believed, didn’t Believe; when men Obeyed, didn’t Obey.

^^^ That has not changed.

History: NT 2,000+ years ago:
...Gods Spirit WITH, NOT WITH...continues for the Same Reasons.
...Gods Spirit IN, NOT IN...Revealed.
...Gods Spirit IN, a man A NEW Teaching Revealed BY JESUS.

...Gods Spirit IN, a man IS Offered By GOD, Through JESUS (Gods Word), of CHRIST (Gods Power, Wisdom, Seed).
....RECEIPT Of “THAT”^ Offering;
....REQUIRES:
Heartful (CONFESSED) BELIEF in God AND Christ Jesus.
....REQUIR-ED: Jesus Who was SENT down from Heaven, TO Return TO Heaven, AND Thereafter WOULD SEND The SPIRIT of God ...
“IN” men...WHO accepted Gods Offering....According to Gods Way;
OF Confession.

Correct ~
*Jesus’ Teaching Revealed Jesus IS the Christ sent forth out from God in Heaven to Earth.
* God Himself is Revealed Having Verified Jesus IS the Christ Messiah.
* Jesus’ chosen Disciples together Learned and Confessed Belief Jesus IS the Christ.
* Shortly the Disciples would learn Jesus would return to Heaven.
* The Disciples were told He would send them the Holy Spirit.
* Mean time, Jesus, BREATHES “ON”...(Not IN his disciples).

* That ^ is our NOTICE, God IS “WITH” them.
* The Disciples receives Jesus’ news, He will be returning to Heaven.
* The news is Disturbing to the Disciples.

* ...We should have “figured via study”, God WITH them, IS THEIR COMFORT, to cope with the news, SOON, they will NOT BODILY Be Seeing Jesus, Whom they have Physically been with 3 years, hearing, learning, observing, loving, adoring, and DO NOT WANT THAT TO END.

* Thereafter, we learn Jesus crucified, Jesus bodily risen, Jesus bodily visiting with His Disciples. The Disciples given missions to represent Jesus in His Stead, with His Word, and His Power to SOON Be “IN” them, to accomplish the missions Jesus has appointed them to accomplish.

Agree ~
Shortly AFTER Jesus returns to Heaven, the Disciples all together, received the Holy Spirit of God “IN” them, fully Preparing them to Accomplish Jesus’ mission to whit they were to be Sent Forth, In Jesus’ Stead.

The BEAUTY of the Teaching is:
That which was Offered and Given Jesus’ Chosen Disciples, IS the Same Offering To EVERY man.

* Some men accept the Offering By Taking the Offering, and Receive the Spirit of God IN them.
* Some men are content By Having Gods Spirit WITH them, then WITHOUT, them, as “they” vacillate back and forth, in belief and obedience.
* Some men are content By Never Having Gods Spirit WITH them.

The Great Blessing of the Teaching is;
** ONCE, the Spirit of God IS IN a man...
The Spirit of God WILL NEVER LEAVE or FORSAKE that man.

The titles put them into the Mother Church of Rev. 17:5 which include her Protestant daughter churches. Everyone of those Churches in existence today is a harlot daughter of the mother whore in Revelation...

"And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."

However, if we are baptized in Jesus name (with immersion into the water - not sprinkling), we are not Protestants, we are a continuance of the ORIGINAL Acts 2:38 Apostolic Church.

Well what is the understanding of 20:22 if what is written didn't happen .

Why did Jesus breath on them?

I am sorry but you have been misled about the nature of Spirit Baptism. Being baptized in the Spirit occurs the moment one is saved. One cannot be saved without being Baptized in the Spirit. It is not a separate additional thing.

Being Born of Water and the Spirit.

Is not a command for water baptism. Jesus made it clear that he was referring to natural and spiritual birth. the very next verse defines what He meant. that which is born of the flesh is flesh (water birth), that which is born of the spirit is spirit( spirit new birth)

So it wasn't enough (to His Jewish audience) to be born of water (natural)Jew by birth) they had to be born spiritually.

Well what is the understanding of 20:22 if what is written didn't happen .

Why did Jesus breath on them?

the OP goes on to say...

Jesus was not talking about amniotic fluid, since everyone has already been born of the womb.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

So we should simply dismiss the words of the Risen Lord? Amazing how foolish some Christians have become. The fact of the matter is that both the Didache and the writings of Justin Martyr prove that the early Christians were baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And that practice has continued for over 2000 years!

But you have also changed the significance of water baptism and made it a requirement for salvation. That is definitely NOT what the Gospel teaches. Baptism by immersion FOLLOWS salvation (the gift of the Holy Ghost and the gift of eternal life) and that is perfectly clear from Acts 10, Acts 16, and many other passages.

Thomas wasn't present and Mathis wasn't chosen yet, so at that time not all of the disciples received the spirit. Jesus had already resurrected and came and went numerous times.

The Didache and the writings of Justin Martyr are not scripture, nor equal to scripture.

However we do know The Early Church partriarch Eusebius wrote at least EIGHTEEN documents between the years 290-339 AD.

EIGHTEEN TIMES, Eusebius QUOTED Matthew 28:19.
EIGHTEEN TIMES he said, "IN THE NAME OF CHRIST."
EIGHTEEN TIMES, Eusebius DID NOT SAY “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

WHY DIDN’T Eusebius say in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost?

Because apparently, the manuscripts HE had read said:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of JESUS CHRIST!”

Matthew was not the only account of the great commission...

Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Hi user - excellent topic!

In context;
...Scriptural Teaching IS:
1) The Spirit of God can be WITH a man.
2) The Spirit of God can be IN a man.

Ancient: OT 6,000+ years ago;
...Repeatedly Gods Spirit was WITH then NOT WITH men.
...We find WHY with, then WHY not with, is directly proportional to when men Believed, didn’t Believe; when men Obeyed, didn’t Obey.

^^^ That has not changed.

History: NT 2,000+ years ago:
...Gods Spirit WITH, NOT WITH...continues for the Same Reasons.
...Gods Spirit IN, NOT IN...Revealed.
...Gods Spirit IN, a man A NEW Teaching Revealed BY JESUS.

...Gods Spirit IN, a man IS Offered By GOD, Through JESUS (Gods Word), of CHRIST (Gods Power, Wisdom, Seed).
....RECEIPT Of “THAT”^ Offering;
....REQUIRES:
Heartful (CONFESSED) BELIEF in God AND Christ Jesus.
....REQUIR-ED: Jesus Who was SENT down from Heaven, TO Return TO Heaven, AND Thereafter WOULD SEND The SPIRIT of God ...
“IN” men...WHO accepted Gods Offering....According to Gods Way;
OF Confession.

The Great Blessing of the Teaching is;
** ONCE, the Spirit of God IS IN a man...
The Spirit of God WILL NEVER LEAVE or FORSAKE that man.

Glory to God,
Taken
Obey Acts 2:38.

Don't be a Catholic.

explain why Jesus even breathed on them what was the purpose of that.

Since we know they didn't receive the Holy Ghost at that moment, the answer has to have something to do with the importance of the future event.

Here is what we know. Jesus told Nicodemus one cannot enter the kingdom without being born again, of water and of spirit. And he instructed them, just before he ascended, to go back to Jerusalem and tarry until they receive the Holy Ghost.

So, I would say it was it was Jesus giving them a heads up of what they were about to hear AND experience. And while the Bible does not say how loud Jesus' breath was, it was no doubt a prelude to what they were about to hear and experience. No doubt, the sound of the mighty rushing wind got their undivided attention.

By the way, the sound of the mighty rushing wind wasn't recorded any where else than the birth and inauguration of the original New Testament Church.

Precisely!

Every person, no matter what denomination or persuasion that baptizes in the titles are an offshoot of Catholicism.

They will all be lined up to face the firing squad along with the RCC for refusing baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins.

Their only hope is to plead insanity or stupidity for believing the name of the son per Matt 28:19 is "son".

Yes, Jesus breathed on them to recieve the Holy Ghost, then sent them to recieve it per Acts 1...

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you...

It was given in measures three times, the last was in acts 4

The next verse shows what the holy spirit given for a measure, to forgive others that's alot of power for that purpose. No human can forgive or retain someone sins unless the holy spirit is given for that purpose Spirit of forgiveness.
John 20:23
whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whose soever [sins] ye retain, they are retained.

Christ breathed the Holy Spirit on them and sent them to preach the Gospel.

Those who accept the Gospel and believe, the 12 had the power of the Holy Spirit to tell them their sins were forgiven.

If they did not accept the Gospel they had the power of the Holy Spirit to tell them their sins were not forgiven.

This sounds strange I know, but Christ has just risen from the dead. He charged them and breathed on them the Holy Spirit the same evening that He rose. He is giving the future apostles the authority by what He has done on the Cross and Resurrection to speak directly to man what the result of believing or disbelieving the Gospel can do. They are now the bearers of the Gospel.

Christ has finished what He came to do, and now the Gospel is about to take Israel by signs and wonders from the Holy Spirit through the apostles at Pentecost.
