Matthew 24:15
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)

Luke 21:20
And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

You're not staying... in the actual written Scriptures.

This is what I've been warning of how men's traditions get started, taking a single verse out of the context of a chapter, and applying some other idea to it. That is very easy to do with God's written Word, almost as if The LORD knew the deceived would do that with single verse essay, instead of staying with the flow of the Chapter, like their being setup for their own lack of discipline in His Word.

To properly understand what the Luke 21:20 verse is pointing to, those next verses after it that go with it, is what shows how verse 20 is meant to be understood...

Luke 21:20-22
20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

KJV

Do you see that "For these be the days of vengeance" idea connected with that desolation event? That is about the LAST DAY of this world when the "sudden destruction" is to come upon the wicked on earth by God's consuming fire (2 Peter 3:10). It is the event of Jesus' future 2nd coming which He stopped short of reading from Isaiah 61 when He started His Ministry per Luke 4. He didn't read that 'day of vengeance' simply because that is about His future 2nd coming on the LAST DAY of this present world.

How then are we to understand that "desolation" idea in verse 20 above?

That "desolation" event is NOT about the "abomination of desolation" idol setup at the start of the "great tribulation" time. That verse 20 "desolation" is about God's consuming fire burning up those armies that come out of the northern quarters upon God's people on the LAST DAY of this world. That desolation is about the battle of Armageddon on the 7th Vial that Jesus with His army from Heaven will fight on the last day. That event is what ends... the great tribulation.

Was Jerusalem compassed with armies leading up to 70 AD?
