I need some tips on memorizing bible verses. Beside John 3:16, I could never seem to memorize any verses. Yes, I knew them roughly but I forgot the verses they came from. And when trying to encourage someone with bible verses, can have a hard time locating the verses I want to encourage the Christians with.

So, share with me your tips. How do you manage to memorize bible verses? What tools do you use? Are the tools useful? Do you recite them until you can memorize them, or do you play bible verse games? What do you do? I tried to recite, I tried to play games, but they don't work. I can't memorize the scriptures. Maybe my memory is just bad... yet I can memorize John 3:16.

Everything I sing, sticks. I recommend searching song versions of Scriptures you'd like to memorize on Youtube. This channel sings whole chapters.

Youversion has plans where someone takes scriptures and puts them to music. Really pretty to listen and meditate on. I agree music helps with memorizing

The biggest tip is to not worry about memorizing scriptures word for word. That’s just normally prooftexting for clobber verses. What’s better is learning the general story and context of sections of the Bible. Learning a story’s point is more important than isolating a verse to force a point.

Hello Original Poster,

I've used just journal pads or note cards. There is nothing wrong with this method in helping you remember. Another great way, is to simply read the bible allowed to oneself. While the bible is great, and it helps us continue in faith, there is never any reason to try to bring out cards to condemn other people! It's all about having faith, hope and love, in understanding what Yeshua had done for the world, for his Father, and for us to love, and continue to remember what has been done with the resurrection of the Lord Jesus/Yeshua, which gives us newness of life by the holy spirit/spirit of Christ which is given into the hearts of those who seek out the Father worshiping in spirit and in truth.

Write offs....

Just like punishments when you were a child.
Joshua 1:8
Do not let this book of the Law depart from your mouth, meditate upon it day and night so that you might be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

I did write offs of the above verse until it was permanently etched into my brain. Until I could write it without looking at it in my bible. Then the next day I did it again until I was sure again. Then two weeks later I did it again just to see if I could. If there was an error I wrote it at least 5 times.

It's not a magic Formula....
It's not magic....just a lot of tedium.

I personally assign a single word that describes the verse in question; then, when I want to remember the verse, I just think of that word.

So for John 3:16, I remember it as "God so" or Mark 11:23, I remember as "Mountain" then I can write these things down and not have to write every last letter, which in turn strengthens my focus as I continue to read these scriptures (and write about them).

Of course the advantage of this technique is also partly to do with the Holy Spirit, He can remind you of a verse if it is firmly lodged in your thinking!

memorising the scriptures locks us into an understanding to inhibits a person from changing His understand of what he may actually read.
