Your thoughts on assisted dying?

The mind is a bunch of experiences, the mind is a funny thing that is influenced by lived experience, and is what makes us who we are.

We know that mathematics exists independently of any material. We also know that information has an existence independently of any material. (Interestingly, information has no weight, no dimension, no energy.)

If I give you a compact disc that supposedly has a Beethoven Symphony on it, you can verify it by playing it (a machine that changes the information of the disc to sound waves, that you hear and your brain interprets it).

Question: does this music exist independently of the compact disc? If it does, where does it reside?

It does not matter whether the symphony is on a CD or a tape or on your phone: it is the same information.

What we call the Spirit (and you call the mind) is the sum total of all the knowledge, experiences, plans, feelings, emotions, thoughts, . . . that is you. It animates a person; without the Spirit, there is just a corpse.

Just as the information on a CD, tape, phone is independent of the material substrate, there is no reason not to believe your spirit is independent of the material substrate where it resides.

There is still a question of whether you are just an organic robot, with no free will. After all, evolution and your world view would imply you are just an organic thing, randomly formed from chemicals and changed over time. You might be complex, but your responses to the world around you should be predictable.

Atheists are committing spiritual suicide. I don’t know that all atheists are in favor of legalized assisted suicide - I would suppose that not all are - but, if I were an atheist, I think that might make me more open to the idea.

While possible, I think it’s unlikely that he would. Why? Simply because he himself is uncertain whether or not Jesus existed.

More likely he would suggest -> Try reading the Bible again with uncertainty about whether or not Jesus ever existed.

How would you respond if he made the suggestion to you?

If they're not able bodied enough, how do you know they're mentally abled enough to make that decision?

Apparently in Canada mental illness alone may soon be enough to receive assistance in dying. There is a ban ending in March for considering mental illness as a sole condition to receive MAID.
