Well, let's face it: the Bible does say such! And from God's perspective, its true! We must not gloss over that. But I suspect what you are saying is that it even though that is true, we can still be "good" on our level. After all, Paul (after his conversion) was pretty good. But even he said "the good I would do, I do not. But the evil I would not do, that I do". Yet... Paul was a good example of who to pattern after.

Some times I wonder how people apply Christianity in their lives. It is one thing to have issues with not understanding good. But the Bible will in general tell us what is good to do and what is bad to do. It is not that difficult. We can be very good and live a nearly sinless life.

I partially agree. Jesus did not come and die to make us all moral... Whatever that may be. He came and died so are sins would be forgiven and covered. Paul preached that as the main reason. That should not be forgotten. However, he did speak much about morals. Sometimes it was his own personal opinion and other times as from the Lord.

So why did Christ come? Why did God the Father and God the Son come up with this plan? He came to forgive our sins? He did a lot more than that. Did He come so we could have a relationship with God? He did more than that. He came to set the conditions so we He could extend the invitation to join the family of God....that is big stuff and it is not something you would do for someone you thought were dirty filthy rags and scum. God believes we have the capacity to be good.

Grace covers sins of the flesh without exception, but that doesn't mean we have to live in debauchery. With grace through faith you are saved, but our earthly life prospers with good guidelines, which yes... Spills over to our spiritual life; just as our spiritual life spills over into our natural life.

Grace is another topic.

Okay I guess being paid to put your life in hams way has some incentive. Besides I believe brake light stated laying down ones life for their enemies.
When we go to war it typically alleged that it’s to kill a foreign enemy, wouldn’t you agree?
I agree soldiers kill their enemies but look at the rest that you wrote.

we can't make that suit white, nor can we keep it clean. Jesus does that.

Ya know it is a wonder that Christians can even begin to apply Christianity. I am not talking about that white suit.
Christ did everything He did for us and we could not do it for ourselves...
What I am talking about is, Christ did all of that, is it too much for Him to expect us to obey Him?
Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do what I say.....
I am talking about applying Christianity in the physical world...in our physical lives.

It is not an easy topic.
You would think with Christians it would be, but it is not.
Programmed to believe you are scum. It is not true.
Programmed to believe you cannot be good. It is not true.
Now the guy that is programming you for this is not the guy that expects you to be good and knows you can.
So we are discussing why you think it is hard to be good.
And along the way we can discuss how we can be good.
And we can discuss what the Bible says we should do and not do.

Who has seen the movie, or read the book, Hacksaw Ridge ? Desmond Doss never fired a bullet, not even on a practise range, want to war and saved the lives of dozens of men under fire. And clearly with the aid of divine help. But he did the work. Because he was good? No, because he loved. And many were led to Christ through his example and testimony. He did good, not because he was good, but because he was filled with the Spirit of Christ.

What are we not talking about.
We are not talking about being gods.
we are not talking about being as good as God.
We are talking about what God wants us to do and not do.
And what is the difficulty of that?
Obedience of that, from the biblical stand point.
Be good and do good...how difficult is that?

And to take a look at what not to do....

1st Corinthians 6:9-10 “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 5:21 “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Revelation 21:8
But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

This will get us started on what not to do....

For what to do, we can look up the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats.

So my question is....what part of this is hard?

When you are making an effort to reduce sin in your life it is important to know what Christ thinks is a sin because He will be the one judging you.

This should be easy for Fundamentalists....Bible only or mostly. Don't pay attention to the morality's of man and that goes with the man-made too. Paul noted not to pay attention to the commandments of men. Weather it be cigarettes, beer, or girls wearing pants are sins or the other end that LBGTLQ, drugs, and sexual promiscuity is not a sin. It is better to stick with the Bible.

Be good and do good is not that hard.
In some ways it is easier today than it use to be.
We are not as community orientated...the family nucleus is the general rule.
It should not be that hard to be kind and friendly.
Male - female relations is a matter of respect for yourself and your person of interest.
Fellowship with Christian friends or with an active church.
I believe in an assembly for praise and worship...that is something we can discuss.
You can give at the office....for charities.
Most areas have food pantries.

So what are the difficulties in keeping sin to a minimum?

Grace is another topic.
While it is your topic and reserve the right to point which way it is intended to go, I disagree. Grace is the only way we will look "good" in the eyes of God, and his opinion ultimately is the only one that matters. Furthermore, I am surprised tou didn't enjoy my comments when the whole paragraph is noted. I said grace is all that is needed, but we still don't have to live in debauchery.

Again, I do agree with you on that point. We can be "good" by human standards and should.

Even so, there are some dangers to this line of thinking and these include: 1. Thinking out fleshly actions account for holiness or evidence of holiness; 2. Pride. And that last one is just as dangerous as the first.

Come to think of it, being judgmental to the point that you are unforgiving is just as bad.

BE GOOD AND DO GOOD has become my slogan on this forum.
I feel like the Johnny Appleseed of be good.
Why has it come to this on this forum?.
Probably one of the most worth while discussion we could have.
I CONTEND THAT IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO BE GOOD!
I CONTEND THAT IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO LIVE A NEARLY SINLESS LIFE!
NOW PROVE ME WRONG!

The truth will set you free! Be honest.
I think it depends a lot on who you are to how much resistance you find against living righteously. Some don't seem to have too much internal struggle, while others seem to fight fierce internal battles.

Addiction is an easy example. The ex-addict may have a lifelong battle against cravings that the person who has never been addicted may not understand.

Much love!

I did enjoy your comment and do not stop. Now go look up the differing beliefs as to what Grace is and what it does.
It is a very interesting topic, but too involved for this thread.
Again, I do agree with you on that point. We can be "good" by human standards and should.

Human standards? What else is there, here on earth. I know, that you know, that Bible is not about practicing and applying Christianity after we are in heaven....it is about the here and know...this topic can go so many directions.

Are we obligated to obey the morals of the New Testament?

Christ is our example that is true...but as He said we are the light of this world....the salt of the earth....do we show the way, do we set the example by being god awful sinners...

Do we preach that Grace is a license to sin. That heaven will not be fit for God or anybody that is good....more or less trapped for eternity with all manner of despicable characters and evil....how is that heaven?
Even so, there are some dangers to this line of thinking and these include: 1. Thinking out fleshly actions account for holiness or evidence of holiness; 2. Pride. And that last one is just as dangerous as the first.

We are not going to be holy....the New Testament does not tell us to be holy. The New Testament tells us to obey Christ ... this is not an opinion....it is a fact....period.
James 1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

Luke 6:46“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

John 14:23 "Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."

Romans 6:16 "Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?"

John 14:21 "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."

Luke 11:28 "But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

1st Peter 1:14 "As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,"

2nd Corinthians 10:5 "We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,"

Romans 1:5 "Through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,"

Acts 5:29 "But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men."

1st John 5:3 "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome."

Matthew 7:14-20 "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Particularly relevant to the OSAS heresy."

2nd Corinthians 2:9 "For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything."

John 15:10 "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love."

John 15:14 "You are my friends if you do what I command you."

Romans 12:2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Another scripture particularly relevant to the new age OSAS heresy.

Ephesians 6:6 "Not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,"

1st John 2:3-6 "And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked."

1st John 3:22 "And whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him."

1st John 3:24 "Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us."

1st John 5:2-3 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome."

James 1:22 "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing."

2nd Thessalonians 1:8 "In flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus."

Philippians 2:12 "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,"

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

Luke 6:46 "“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?"

Matthew 7:20-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Does this look like an opinion?
Come to think of it, being judgmental to the point that you are unforgiving is just as bad.

Judgmental of sin....oh yes. Judge the sin not the sinner.
What they believe is between them and Christ, I just stand against sin and try to protect others.
Now if you want scriptures that we should judge sin or avoid sin let me know.

2. Pride. And that last one is just as dangerous as the first.

The Bible specifically tells us that our obedience...our good character does not justify pride.

But is it possible that Christ is proud of us, if we obey and have good character.
What does that do to our walk with Christ. Our relationship with God.
What is the alternative, sin and sin some more. Does that endear us with Christ?
Should a Christian only be concerned about draining the reservoir of forgiveness and give no mind to obedience?

Again the question is; why do you feel it is so hard to be good?

I think we make too many excuses, when our hearts should be to please God with all that is in us.

There are examples of good people in the Bible to model after like Noah, Job, and Joseph.

I do think we set the bar too low when we act as if Christians being "sinful failures" is this default we cannot escape.

@Wynona We need to be, not introspective, but 'looking unto Jesus' (Hebrews 12.2).

@Wynona @farouk @FHII

What sins do you think are the hardest to avoid?
Now the reason I ask this is that I know people may have issues with obedience in some areas. The Christian walk.
But I don't want to see people struggling with man-made sins...when the focus should be on biblical sins. You are never going to get judged on man-made sins.

I would be interested in knowing what verse that Paul wrote that you are referring to. I have my suspicions, and if you look deeper he was saying just the opposite of what you are implying. However, I can't be sure until I know what verse you are speaking of.

Since you brought up Paul and then stated that doing good us not that hard, here is what Paul said:

Romans 7:19 KJV
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

It seems then, even for Paul, its not as easy.
