Who has the authority to interpret scripture?

Interpretation provides meaning!

Meaning provides understanding!

Understanding produces unity!

Examples:

Text: a Fat sandwich man.

What does it mean: a fat man making sandwiches?

Or does it mean: a man making fat sandwiches?

No Hurry:

Does it mean we don’t have time so hurry up?

Or does it mean we got lots of time?

Seven spirits of God:

Does it mean there are seven holy spirits?
Or the seven gifts of the spirit?

Seven churches:

Does it mean there are seven churches?

Or the one church at seven different locations?

Jn 3:5 born again by water and the spirit.

Does it mean “faith alone”? “Accept Jesus as your personal lord and savior”?

Or does it mean the Christian sacrament of baptism?

the church existed before the NT
The church wrote the NT
The scriptures are the possession of the church!
The church alone has authority to interpret scripture and provide meaning, understanding and unity of faith!

2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

1) "Knowing this first." (Ginoskontes) knowing or recognizing (Greek touto proton) this first (Concerning the "more sure" or written Word of prophecy)

2) "That no prophecy of the scripture" (hoti) that (pasa propheteia graphes) "all prophecy of the scripture" the written Word

3) "Is of any private interpretation." (Greek ginetoi) becomes (ou) not (Greek idias) of its own, (epiluseos) own solution. It is not to be interpreted in isolation from the contextual setting, but in the light of subject matter on which the prophet prophesied, 2Ti_2:15.

interpretation. Greek. epilusis. Only here. The verb epiluo is found in Mar_4:34 (expounded), and Act_19:39 (determined). This shows that the meaning is that prophecy is not self-originated by the speaker.

We cannot and dare not take a verse here and there, it is all about context.

Who has the authority to interpret scripture?

Interpretation provides meaning!

Meaning provides understanding!

Understanding produces unity!

Only the Word of God has the final authority when it comes to interpretations. The Bible is clear that no part of scripture is of any private (one’s own) interpretation.

2 Peter 1:20-21 (KJV)
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

This is why we are told that anything we believe to be true about the Bible and proclaim as truth, is subject to the Word of God as he gave to his prophets to pen the scriptures.

1 Corinthians 14:32-33 (KJV)
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

In order for anyone to know for sure if they are understanding any doctrine correctly, it has to be scrutinized by the Word of God. If the Word of God agrees with your particular understanding on any doctrine, then you have found truth. But if any part of the Bible contradicts what you believe to be truth, then you have to make correction.

Everything in the Bible must agree as there is only one truth. Our job is to seek for it and make corrections when necessary.

2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

God also instructs us how we are to study his word in order to obtain correct doctrine. It’s by searching all throughout the Bible for agreement (harmony).

Isaiah 28:9-10 (KJV)

9 Whom shall he teach knowledge?
and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?
them that are weaned from the milk,
and drawn from the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept;
line upon line, line upon line;
here a little, and there a little:

Are you, or the denomination you belong to, one of "God's people" who are "being regathered in the prophecy of Isaiah"?

I believe so maam, but of course that is irrelevant as I have to answer for myself, but I did take the Bible and prove it to myself. Do you believe that God leaves us out in the cold, or makes it perfectly clear how to identify His people and the path we are to take if we want to belong to Him?

If He doesn't identify the path, then obviously He cannot rightly hold anyone accountable, but if He does, then He has every right to expect people to obey. Does this make sense Mary?

How many Hail Jesus are on the Rosary?

its a Marian prayer

there are tons of prayers to Jesus that have no reference to Mary

The primary and greatest prayer on the church is the holy sacrifice of the mass!

The church is founded by Christ and is christocentric!

All scripture is inspired!
Says nothing about context

personal interpretation no!
Apostolic interpretation yes!

The church wrote the New Testament
It is in the custody of the church and only the church can interpret scripture

only the church can say what is and what is not scripture

have you ever read Daniel chapter 13?

sorry

what the context of Jn 3:5

faith alone

or baptismal regeneration?
2) "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit," (ean me tis gennethe eks hudatos kai pneumatos) "Unless anyone is born of water and spirit;" This alludes to two births: First, there is the birth from the mother's womb, the natural birth, referred to in medical terms as, the “water birth," by which the natural man or the old man is born; Second, there is the birth, begettal, or quickening by the spirit, referred to as the "new birth," birth from above, when man's spirit is quickened by God's Spirit, by which one becomes a new creature in Christ Jesus and a child of God, fit to enter the kingdom of God, and then by baptism into the church, Joh_6:63; 1Jn_5:1; Gal_3:26-27.

3) "He cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (ou dunatai eiselthein eis ten basileian tou theou) "He is not able to enter into the spiritual domain of God," to enter into the Holy presence, domain, and jurisdiction of God. One can neither enter into heaven, where He resides and presides over the affairs of His universe, until and unless he is born again, born from above, born of the Spirit, or has another birth nature (of Spirit kind) different from the natural, fleshly, or water birth, the first birth nature, 1Ti_3:15; Mat_28:18-20.
One's genealogy must be Divinely established for him to worship God in holiness, in spirit and in truth, Joh_4:24. Those born of the flesh, without the new birth, the birth from above, have an unholy genealogy, a depraved spiritual nature only, and are by nature "children of wrath," Eph_2:3; who can not enter heaven, the kingdom of God, in its spiritual sphere, until and unless they are born of the spirit, their spirit is born of God's spirit, through faith in Christ Jesus. By this birth one may become a new creature, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, Joh_6:63; 1Jn_5:11; 2Co_5:17; Eph_2:8-10.

Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

This verse has nothing to do "by faith alone" nor "baptismal regeneration"...any saving efficacy in water?

In case you haven't notice, this is an Imperative from Christ not only to Nicodemus but to all who were standing there with Christ...you..ye

Church fathers

A) "It does not suffice to believe. He who believes and is not yet baptized, but is only a Catechumen, has not yet fully acquired salvation." St. Thomas Aquinas

B) "Now, even the Catechumen believes in the Cross of the Lord Jesus, but unless he be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, he cannot receive remission of his sins nor the gift of spiritual grace." St. Ambrose

C) "Without the Sacrament of Baptism, no one is ever justified. If anyone says that Baptism is optional, that is, not necessary for salvation: let him be anathema." Council of Trent

D)
“There are three ways in which sins are forgiven: in baptism, in prayer, and in the greater humility of penance; yet God does not forgive sins except to the baptized” (Sermons to Catechumens on the Creed 7:15 [A.D. 395]).
St. AUGUSTINE

E) “As many as are persuaded and believe that what we [Christians] teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly . . . are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, ‘Except you be born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’ [John 3:3]” (First Apology 61 [A.D. 151]).
JUSTIN MARTYR

TERTULLIAN
“Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life. . . . [But] a viper of the [Gnostic] Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism—which is quite in accordance with nature, for vipers and.asps . . . themselves generally do live in arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes after the example of our [Great] Fish, Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water. So that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes—by taking them away from the water!” (Baptism 1 [A.D. 203]).

“Without baptism, salvation is attainable by none” (ibid., 12).

ORIGEN
“It is not possible to receive forgiveness of sins without baptism” (Exhortation to the Martyrs 30 [A.D. 235]).

CYRIL OF JERUSALEM
“If any man does not receive baptism, he does not have salvation.

St. AUGUSTINE
“There are three ways in which sins are forgiven: in baptism, in prayer, and in the greater humility of penance; yet God does not forgive sins except to the baptized” (Sermons to Catechumens on the Creed 7:15 [A.D. 395]).

POPE LEO I
“And because of the transgression of the first man, the whole stock of the human race was tainted; no one can be set free from the state of the old Adam save through Christ’s sacrament of baptism, in which there are no distinctions between the reborn, as the apostle [Paul] says, ‘For as many of you as were baptized in Christ did put on Christ; there is neither Jew nor Greek . . . ‘ [Gal. 3:27–28]” (Letters 15:10[11] [A.D. 445]).

FULGENTIUS OF RUSPE
“From that time at which our Savior said, ‘If anyone is not reborn of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven’ [John 3:5], no one can, without the sacrament of baptism, except those who, in the Catholic Church, without baptism, pour out their blood for Christ, receive the kingdom of heaven and life eternal” (The Rule of Faith 43 [A.D. 524]).

Irenaeus
He [Jesus] came to save all through himself – all, I say, who through him are reborn in God; INFANTS, and children, and youths, and old men. Therefore he passed through every age, becoming an INFANT for INFANTS, sanctifying INFANTS; a child for children, sanctifying those who are of that age . . . [so that] he might be the perfect teacher in all things, perfect not only in respect to the setting forth of truth, perfect also in respect to relative age (Against Heresies 2:22:4 [A.D. 189]).

Hippolytus
Baptize first the children, and if they can speak for themselves let them do so. Otherwise, let their parents or other relatives speak for them (The Apostolic Tradition 21:16 [A.D.215]).

Origen
THE CHURCH RECEIVED FROM THE APOSTLES the tradition of giving baptism even to infants. The APOSTLES, to whom were committed the secrets of divine sacraments, knew there is in everyone innate strains of [original] sin, which must be washed away through water and the Spirit (Commentaries on Romans 5:9 [A.D. 248]).

Cyprian
As to what pertains to the case of INFANTS: You [Fidus] said that they ought not to be baptized within the second or third day after their birth, that the old law of circumcision must be taken into consideration, and that you did not think that one should be baptized and sanctified within the eighth day after his birth. In our council it seemed to us far otherwise. No one agreed to the course which you thought should be taken. Rather, we all judge that the mercy and grace of God ought to be denied to no man born" (Letters 64:2 [A.D. 253]).

Augustine
It is this one Spirit who makes it possible for an infant to be regenerated . . . when that INFANT is brought to baptism; and it is through this one Spirit that the infant so presented is reborn. For it is not written, "Unless a man be born again by the will of his parents" or "by the faith of those presenting him or ministering to him," but, "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit." The water, therefore, manifesting exteriorly the sacrament of grace, and the Spirit effecting interiorly the benefit of grace, both regenerate in one Christ that man who was generated in Adam (Letters 98:2 [A.D. 408]).

Jn 3:5 born again means baptism?!
Explain the doctrine of regeneration to me? Since our eternal destination is at stake here!

It is really a tragedy that the Bible has been chopped up into pieces by verses. The KJV is one of the worst offenders of this distortion, showing each verse as stand-alone.

Here is John 3:5-8, a paragraph in the NIV, "Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Clearly, John 3:5 doesn't mean baptism. The following sentence (John 3:6) makes it perfectly clear: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." Born of water means natural birth.

new creation

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Galatians 3:27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost

God breathed life into Adam, gen 2:7 and we received this life from our fathers!

Christ breathed on the apostles our spiritual fathers, we receive the new covenant life of God’s grace from them thru faith & baptism! Jn 20:21-23 Mk 16:16 acts 8:36-38

Born again! Born from above!

'The Father has set his seal' on Christ (John 6:27) and also seals us in him (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 1:23, 4:30). Because this seal indicates the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Baptism,

Baptism indeed is the seal of eternal life." 87 The faithful Christian who I has "kept the seal" until the end, remaining faithful to the demands of his Baptism, will be able to depart this life "marked with the sign of faith," 88 with his baptismal faith, in expectation of the blessed vision of God - the consummation of faith - and in the hope of resurrection.

St. Paul tells the faithful at Ephesus that they have been “sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” This is in terms of an indelible character imprinted on the soul in the sacraments of baptism and confirmation. It is not as if this invisible mark is simply decorative. Rather, through it, we are enabled to participate in Christ’s mission and in his offices of priest, prophet, and king. Eph 1:13

Sealed by God eph 1:13 sealed by God (ez 36:25-27) in the ark of salvation by baptism just as Noah was sealed by God in the ark of the flood gen 7:16

1 Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us!
(Ark of Noah a type of the church, member of Christ and his church and salvation by baptism!)

Really sorry, I have stopped reading, your commentary is faulty

Then you could answer a few easy questions

Faith alone apart from the sacraments

Questions

where does scripture says we have died with Christ by “faith alone”?

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

where does scripture say we are members of Christ and his church by “faith alone”?

1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

where does scripture says we put on Christ by “faith alone”?

Galatians 3:27

Eph_6:23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Php_1:25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;
Php_1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Php_2:17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
Php_3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Col_1:4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
Col_1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Col_2:5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
Col_2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Col_2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
1Th_1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
1Th_1:8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
1Th_3:2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
1Th_3:5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
1Th_3:6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
1Th_3:7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
1Th_3:10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
1Th_5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
2Th_1:3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
2Th_1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:
2Th_1:11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
2Th_3:2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
1Ti_1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
1Ti_1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
1Ti_1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
1Ti_1:14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
1Ti_1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
1Ti_2:7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ,

1Ti_2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
1Ti_3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
1Ti_3:13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
1Ti_4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1Ti_4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
1Ti_4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1Ti_5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
1Ti_5:12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
1Ti_6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1Ti_6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
1Ti_6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
1Ti_6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea, which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana.
