Our goal should be to become more like Him as we continue to grow. Too many people reach a plateau and believe they can stop now on that plateau proceeding no further... just waiting for God to provide their final reward. This is I believe wrong if there is a place God higher than we are and there is time left to us.

If we were equal to God in all ways now, the stopping might be appropriate. For anyone not equal to God now, to stop, I believe, is to die if we are not dead already. Who is now equal to God?
Are you asking questions knowing the answer, or are you "testing me?"

What is the purpose of sanctification?

Very simply off the top of my head, sanctification might be called a process of becoming holy, of being set apart by God. Is it not the growth process as per the John 3:30 verse quoted already?
Was Paul sinless? Did he wrote in scripture that he was sinless?
@amadeus ?
I already said I did not know the answer to the first question. Let us remember what Heb 11:11 says that faith is. We are walking by faith, which I believe would then be moving us into knowledge, God's knowledge, but without help, can we now know what is already knowledge and what is still faith within ourselves?

To begin with, Paul encouraged the Corinthians by his
personal prayers on their behalf (2 Cor. 13:9). The
word translated “wish” in the King James Version carries the meaning of “pray.”

Paul prayed for their
perfection, which does not mean absolute sinless perfection, but “spiritual maturity.” The word is part of a
word family in the Greek that means “to be fitted out,
to be equipped.” As a medical term, it means “to set a
broken bone, to adjust a twisted limb.” It also means
“to outfit a ship for a voyage” and “to equip an army for
battle.” In Matthew 4:21, it is translated “mending
nets.”

One of the ministries of our risen Lord is that of
perfecting His people (Heb. 13:20–21). He uses the
Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16–17) in the fellowship of the
local church (Eph. 4:11–16) to equip His people for
life and service. He also uses suffering as a tool to equip
us (1 Peter 5:10). As Christians pray for one another (1
Thess. 3:10) and personally assist one another (Gal.
6:1, where “restore” is this same word perfect), the
exalted Lord ministers to His church and makes them
fit for ministry.
2 Corinthians 13
542
Balanced Christian growth and ministry is impossible in isolation. Someone has said that you can no
more raise one Christian than you can raise one bee.
Christians belong to each other and need each other. A
baby must grow up in a loving family if it is to be balanced and normal. The emphasis today on the
individual Christian, as apart from his place in a local
assembly, is wrong and very dangerous. We are sheep,
and we must flock together. We are members of the
same body, and we must minister to one another.
In 2 Corinthians 13:10, Paul gave the Corinthians
a second encouragement—the Word of God. Paul
wrote this letter to meet the immediate needs of a local
congregation, but we today benefit from it because it is
a part of the inspired Word of God. This letter carries
the same authority as the presence of the apostle himself. Paul’s great desire was that the congregation’s
obedience to the letter solve their problems, so that he
would not have to exercise authority when he visited
them.

Sometimes the minister of the Word must tear
down before he can build up (see Jer. 1:7–10).

The
farmer must pull up the weeds before he can plant the
seeds and get a good crop. Paul had to tear down the
wrong thinking in the minds of the Corinthians (2
Cor. 10:4–6) before he could build up the truth in
their hearts and minds. The negative attitude of the
Corinthians made it necessary for Paul to destroy, but
his great desire was to build.
In my own ministry, I have been through two
building programs and two remodeling programs and,
in spite of all their demands, building programs to me
are much easier. It is much simpler and less expensive
to build a new structure on unimproved land than to
tear down walls and try to remodel an old building.
Likewise, it is much easier to take a new believer and
teach him the Word than it is to try to change the
wrong thinking of an older saint. Wrong ideas can hold
out against the truth for a long time, until the Spirit of
God demolishes the walls in the mind.
Paul encouraged the saints to cultivate grace, love,
and peace (2 Cor. 13:11–12). The word translated
“farewell” means “grace,” a common form of greeting
in that day. It can also be translated “rejoice.” The command be perfect relates to Paul’s prayer in 2 Corinthians
13:9 and carries the idea “be mature, be restored and
fitted for life.” Be of good comfort means “be encouraged.” In spite of all their sins and problems, they had
every right to be encouraged.
Live in peace was a needed admonition, for there
were divisions and dissensions in the church (see 2 Cor.
12:20). If they practiced love and sought to be of one
mind, the wars would cease and they would enjoy
peace in their fellowship. To be of one mind does not
mean that we all agree on everything, but that we agree
to disagree over matters that are not essential.
Our God is the “God of love and peace” (2 Cor.
13:11). Can the outside world tell that from the way
we live and the way we conduct the business of the
church? “Behold how they love one another!” was what
the lost world said about the early church, but it has
been a long time since the church has earned that kind
of commendation.
Since ancient times, the kiss has been a form of
greeting and a gesture of love and fellowship. However,
it was usually exchanged between members of the same
sex. The early church used the kiss of peace and kiss of
love as evidences of their affection and concern for one
another. It was a “holy kiss,” sanctified because of their
devotion to Jesus Christ. Members of the early church
often kissed new believers after their baptism and thus
welcomed them into the fellowship.
The everyday fellowship of God’s people is important to the church. We must greet each other in other
places as well as the fellowship of the assembly, and we
must show concern for each other. In giving this admonition in 2 Corinthians 13:12, Paul was certainly
hitting hard at one of the most serious problems in the
church: their division and lack of concern for one
another.
The closing benediction in 2 Corinthians 13:14 is
one of the most beloved used in the church. It emphasizes the Trinity (see Matt. 28:19) and the blessings we
can receive because we belong to God. The grace of our
Lord Jesus Christ reminds us of His birth, when He
became poor in order to make us rich (see 2 Cor. 8:9).
The love of God takes us to Calvary, where God gave
His Son as the sacrifice for our sins (John 3:16). The
communion of the Holy Ghost reminds us of Pentecost,
when the Spirit of God came and formed the church
(Acts 2).
The Corinthian believers then, and all believers
now, desperately needed the blessings of grace, love,
and communion. The Judaizers then, and the cultists
today, emphasized law instead of grace, exclusiveness
instead of love, and independence rather than communion (fellowship). The competition in the
Corinthian church, resulting in divisions, would have
been solved if the people had only lived by God’s grace
and love.
The church is a miracle, and it can be sustained
only by the miracle ministry of God. No amount of
human skill, talents, or programs can make the church
what it ought to be. Only God can do that. If each
believer is depending on the grace of God, walking in
the love of God, and participating in the fellowship of
the Spirit, not walking in the flesh, then he will be a
part of the answer and not a part of the problem. He
will be living this benediction—and being a benediction to others!
Ask God to make you that kind of Christian.
Be encouraged—and then encourage others.
Warren Wiersbe

Think he answered it well

You still have not answered my question re sanctification.
J.
Take it easy my friend. I am not young nor as fast as I once was, which was always slow, especially when I did not know God. Yesterday was my first all-day session in Chemotherapy and my body is just trying to come back a little. I only skimmed your above post because it was lengthy and I am tired. I think I did answer your question on sanctification a few minutes ago.

I am edified by listening to RC as he talks about growth and sanctification and that we are not holy as we ought to be.

But then again, you don't have to listen as most here have a "negative faith" toward anything Reformed, but boy, the testimonies.

What I love about these boys is that they may disagree on some points but still have a deep love toward one another and play a "sanctified game of golf together"

You ask a lot of questions but the answers is in the video clips from God's word, but you refuse to listen.

Man, I love RC and these Irish boys.
J.
The answers are certainly in the Word of God, which may be heard when God provides us with the interpretation which He often will do through me. What Jesus said was heard and understood clearly by some others had not a clue as to what he was saying. How does one hear the Word of God without the Holy Spirit?

Our Lord’s own words in Luke 9:27 indicate that
the event was a demonstration (or illustration) of the
promised kingdom of God. This seems logical, for the
disciples were confused about the kingdom because of
Jesus’ words about the cross. (We must not be too hard
on them, because the prophets were also confused—1
Peter 1:10–12.) Jesus was reassuring them that the Old
Testament prophecies would be fulfilled, but first He
had to suffer before He could enter into His glory (note
especially 2 Peter 1:12–21).

But there is also a practical lesson here, for we can
have a spiritual “transfiguration” experience each day as
we walk with the Lord. Romans 12:1–2 and 2
Corinthians 3:18 tell us how. As we surrender body,
mind, and will, the Lord transforms us from within so
that we are not conformed to the world. As we behold
Him in the Word (the mirror), we are “transfigured” by
the Spirit “from glory to glory.”

The theological name
for this experience is sanctification, the process by
which we become more like the Lord Jesus Christ,
which is the Father’s goal for each of His children
(Rom. 8:19; 1 John 3:2). Note that our Lord was once
again praying, which suggests that prayer is one of the
keys to a transformed life.
Peter, James, and John had accompanied Jesus
when He raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead (Luke
8:51ff.), and they would accompany Him when He
prayed in the garden (Matt. 26:36–46). These three
occasions remind me of Philippians 3:10: “That I may
Luke 9
167
know him [the Transfiguration], and the power of his
resurrection [raising the girl], and the fellowship of his
sufferings [in the garden].”
This may well have been the greatest “Bible conference” ever held on earth! Even apart from the great
glory that was involved, here you certainly had the
greatest speakers: Moses, the law; Elijah, the prophets;
and Jesus, who came to fulfill the law and the prophets.
You had the greatest topic: Jesus’ “decease” (the Greek
is exodus) that He would accomplish at Jerusalem.
Moses had led Israel out of bondage to Egypt, and
Elijah had delivered them from bondage to false gods,
but Jesus would die to set a sinful world free from
bondage to sin and death (Gal. 1:4; Col. 1:13; Heb.
2:14–15).
WB

Note the progressive part of sanctification, this is "cut out" by these sinless perfectionists.
Yes?
Anymore questions?
J.
Ever remember me talking about the A.T.'s [Absolute Truth] first mentioned on this forum, I believe by our friend @bbyrd009 ? God knows the AT about everything, would you not agree? Do you suppose that if you study the Bible long enough and hard enough you could get there... to knowing all the ATs that is?

I remember many years ago thinking that I could. Quite a few years ago now I began to disagree with my old conclusion.

Testing you? Who am I test anyone unless the Holy Spirit led me to do so? Sometimes God gives me questions to ask, not because what I believe is correct, but because he is teaching me as well. Maybe His intention is to also teach you or others reading these posts...?

Very simply off the top of my head, sanctification might be called a process of becoming holy, of being set apart by God.

Everytime anyone begins talking about this I get real confused. I used to think, oh one day I’m sure I will understand it but…I’m beginning to think I never will. I think maybe men have mucked it up.

I don’t think holy is a good word to use for both men and God. Too confusing. So I understand sanctification as a process of being increasingly set aside for Gods use but I cant see sanctified as meaning holy. When I think, holy, holy, holy, the definition is in my head as…unspeakable. When angels say holy, holy, holy, they can not be saying of God that God is set aside for Gods own use.

Very simply off the top of my head, sanctification might be called a process of becoming holy, of being set apart by God. Is it not the growth process as per the John 3:30 verse quoted already?
Joh 3:27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
Joh 3:28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
Joh 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
Joh 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
Joh 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
Joh 3:32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
Joh 3:33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
Joh 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
Joh 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

SANCTIFICATION (Gk. hagiasmos, “separation, a setting apart”). The Heb. term qōdesh,
rendered “sanctify,” has a corresponding meaning. The dominant idea of sanctification,
therefore, is separation from the secular and sinful and setting apart for a sacred purpose. As
the holiness of God means His separation from all evil (see Holiness of God), so
sanctification, in the various Scripture applications of the term, has a kindred lofty
significance.
In the OT economy, things, places, and times, as well as persons, were sanctified, i.e.,
consecrated to holy purposes (see Gen. 2:3; Ex. 13:2; 40:10–13; etc.). Connected with this
were the Mosaic rites of purification (see, e.g., Num. 6:11; Lev. 22:16, 32; Heb. 9:13). These
rites, however, when applied to persons were efficacious only in a ceremonial and legal sense
and did not extend to the purifying of the moral and spiritual nature. They were symbolical
and thus were intended not only to remind the Jew of the necessity of spiritual cleansing but
also of the gracious purpose of God to actually accomplish the work. So David prayed not
only, “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean,” but also, “Create in me a clean heart, O
God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:7–10).
Although in the OT, as well as in the NT, men are sometimes called upon to sanctify
themselves, i.e., to consecrate themselves truly to God (see Ex. 19:22; Lev. 11:44; 20:7–8; 1
Pet. 3:15), the thought everywhere prevails that inward cleansing is the work of God. See
Holy Spirit.

SANCTIFICATION, ENTIRE. Is it the privilege of believers to be wholly sanctified in this
life? The doctrine of the Roman Catholic church is that baptism, rightly administered, washes
away not only guilt but also depravity of every kind; and thus, in its own peculiar way, that
church answers the question in the affirmative (see Baptism). Among Protestant theologians
there is wide difference of belief; and there are undoubtedly greater differences of statement,
because of confusion in the use of terms. We have space only to indicate in a most general
way the two leading views and to add a few suggestions for guidance.
The Calvinistic View. To the Calvinists, sanctification is imperfect in this life.
Corruption of nature remains even in the regenerate so that during this life no man is able to
live without sin. For formal expression of this doctrine the reader is referred to the
Westminster Confession and to the Larger Catechism of the Presbyterian church.
The Methodist View. The Methodists, on the other hand, despite various shades of
opinion and form of statement, see entire sanctification in a true and scriptural sense as being
attainable in this life; and accordingly, Christians may arrive at a state of spiritual purity in
which they are able to remain free from condemnation. This view is in agreement with the
Calvinistic in regarding sanctification as distinct from regeneration (see Regeneration). But it
is in strongest contrast thereto in regarding the work of spiritual purification as one that may
be wrought instantaneously and in the present life. It should be said that the essential features
of Methodist doctrine are held by many other denominations.
Summary of New Testament Statement. The NT presents the doctrine of sanctification
in three aspects: positional, experiential, and ultimate. Positional sanctification is the
possession of everyone “in Christ.” The great doctrinal epistles of the NT first present the
marvels of saving grace manifested in the believer’s position and then close with an appeal
for life consonant with this divinely wrought position (Rom. 12:1; Eph. 4:1; Col. 3:1–2).
Positional sanctification is just as complete for the weakest and youngest believer as it is for
the strongest and oldest. It depends only upon one’s union with and position “in Christ.” All
believers are “saints” and are “sanctified” (Acts 20:32; 1 Cor. 1:2; 6:11; Heb. 10:10, 14; Jude
3). First Corinthians presents proof that imperfect believers are nevertheless positionally
sanctified and therefore “saints.” The Corinthian Christians were carnal in life (1 Cor. 5:1–2;
6:1–8), but they are twice said to have been “sanctified” (1:2 and 6:11). Thus this positional
aspect of sanctification is absolutely essential if the doctrine as a whole is to be clearly
understood.
Experiential. The basis of experiential sanctification, or actual holiness of life, is
positional sanctification, or what one is in Christ. Only those “in Christ,” that is, regenerate
and thus concomitantly sanctified, are candidates for experiential sanctifications. This phase
of sanctification is effected by faith that reckons upon one’s position in Christ (Rom. 6:1–10).
One’s position is true whether or not he reckons or counts it as true. But it becomes
experientially real only in proportion as one reckons it to be true (6:11).
Ultimate. This is glorification or complete conformity to Christ at His coming (1 John
3:1–3; Rom. 8:29–30; Jude 24, 25). A.E.MCC.; M.F.U.

Maybe..have you listened to the video clips?
No... but I have always been slow to listen to many clips because there are so many. I may get to them later, but I do have other priorities especially in my own Bibles and time spent with God. Hopefully then always as He leads me, I always need to follow.

No, I don't know/epignosis the AT
I guess I had that coming. I hit you with the AT and you hit me with a word I have to look up to know what you are talking about: (the following in the 1st definition that came up when I input the word here)

epignosis means "mature knowledge," but adds that it "can hardly be given in English without too strong a phrase."2 Plummer, along the same line, suggests that epignosis implies a "fuller, riper, more minute knowledge;" but, he says, "any of these expressions would be a little too strong, as the simple word is a little too weak."3

Usually ATs are the essentials of what men call their beliefs or their faith that to them are absolute. They will not seriously discuss the possibility of them being wrong. Of course if they should really be opposed to God even in a measure who then has shut the door in God's face? Logic is a good tool, but even combined with the Bible and good study habits will that lead us to more of God's Truth?

Consider the following verses on this with emphasis on the third one:

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. II Tim 2:15

And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh." Prov 12:12

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14:26

@amadeus if you have a hotline to God and are in Christ and have the Holy Spirit leading you, I don't. Satisfied?
Must it always be me against you instead of very simply all of those who love Him striving to encounter together and for one another whatever He has for us? I have too many shortcomings in my walk and gaps in my understandings to be putting anyone else down. I am still asking and seeking, knocking and surrendering to Him. Do I have on the whole armour of God? How well does it fit me?

Eph 6:13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Eph 6:14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Eph 6:15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Eph 6:16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Eph 6:17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Eph 6:18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

What you are saying is that we are not like God! I agree, but is not becoming more like God to be a goal for us?

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" Isaiah 55:8-9
But then...

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." I John 3:2

Communication has always been a problem in discussions like this, not because we do not know the original written languages of scripture [although that certain may be involved], more because our starting point is inconceivably far away from where God is all of the time.
If God is the One who is Holy, Holy, Holy, how can we honestly speak of any mere man being holy?
This takes me back to the need to always be g rowing, g rowing g rowing so long as we have time and ability and even then, we must use the Help provided by God to make any progress [in His eyes?] at all.
