When God's Word points to an IDOL involved in the temple, it means an IDOL in false worship. That is what the "abomination that maketh desolate" is about. It's not about a Cracker Jacks wrapper left in the temple court by Roman soldiers, nor any such idea as only a 'symbol'. At the end of Revelation 13 we are actually shown the IDOL that future abomination event will include, the "image of the beast".
Rev 13:14-15
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

So instead of your listening to men's created doctrines that go against God's written Word, you might want to go back and study your Old Testament histories, because the reason why Christ put references to old Babylon in His Revelation is so we would know what the coming final Antichrist will do at the end of this world. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, setup a gold IDOL image of himself, and demanded that all bow in worship to it, or be killed. So you don't see that parallel in the Revelation 13 Scripture above?
What I mean is that there are other things that God calls abomination. And I suspect the following is what most likely applies to the abomination of desolation:
Isa 66:1-7
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the
house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
I also will choose their
delusions, and
will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. (as we know Israel rejected the new covenant and the High Priest of it, and chose instead to continue in their sins and in the old covenant temple sacrifices, while persecuting the church of the new covenant.)
Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.
A voice of noise from the city,
a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child. (Israel gave birth to Christ before her labour pains came upon her in 70AD)
