Of course its about MESSIAH and HIS FATHERThe psalm obviously isn’t about David. The psalm is about the Messiah.
The NT writers used it - the most frequently quoted / alluded to OT text in the NT - to support their belief and the preaching of the apostles that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, Son of God.
34“For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
36“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Just as the pre-incarnate JESUS was saying to David so the FATHER says to His only begotten SON = LORD JESUS CHRIST
