Our Pastor after 20 years of service, retired last year. The new Pastor said, baptism is just water. He claimed, he would baptize us 3, 4, or 5 times...as many times as it took to get it right. Is this even biblical.See, I thought we was to place our faith in the Lord. That God would do as He promised. Getting rebaptized so often by the same Pastor, would make one doubt the Pastor whom was baptizing and also doubt God. Too me, it seemed odd, so my wife and I, went to another church. We took it, that the new Pastor was a false prophet. Thank you for a response..

The new Pastor said, baptism is just water.
And he is right, there is nothing magical or spiritual about the water used in baptism. Once the service is over the plug is pulled and it drains away.

Did you ask your pastor what he meant by saying he'd baptise people multiply times to get it right?

imo it is kind of hard to say, as water baptism is recognized as a ritual that is supposed to represent a reality, even if many do not perceive it that way, but rather as salvational. But i run from this "rebaptizing" doctrine myself. So, it may just have been a prod for you to go and find a new "town" to go and "eat what they give you" too, possibly, nothing wrong with that imo

Yes, that is when he said, it is just water...... Baptism to me, is something I hold close to my heart, because Jesus done it. We are to be like Him. It represents we are new creatures. The old has passed away. I took it as the new Pastor was taking as something that needed repeating. Loosely using it.

it's funny how when you read that passage, Jesus is like "suffer it to be so for now," iow the human perspectives of those people who existed then are seemingly being addressed--and then, later, we find that Jesus never did baptize others, as the original passage suggests might commence. Just a weird thing

IMO it is important to remember Jesus died once. So someone should only be baptised once into his death.

Christians shouldn't doubt their salvation and keep getting baptised until they are comfortable. Thats not the way it works, if you're uncomfortable that is a hint the Holy Spirit is working.

It's not biblical.
I'd run so fast from that pastor your head would spin.
What does he mean "get it right"?
Does he not know the correct form?
LOL

There IS something magical about baptismal water.
Did your baptism mean nothing to you?
You DIE in that water, and are RE-BORN.
It is water that brings life.
It's also a sign that you desire that life.
John baptised for the forgiveness of sin.
Jesus said to baptise for power.
This water which means nothing to you, brings power.
The Apostles waited for this water before they left Jerusalem to go preach and baptise others and grow the church.

Baptism is symbolic only. I was a Christian before I went for baptismn.
My going down into the water and coming up out of the water were symbolic of my going down and up out of the grave.

If there was something in the water of baptism our congragation would be leaving soaking wet.
The unbelieving family and friends of those being batised would be hosed down.

It seems that this new "pastor" feels that it is up to "him" to get it right.
Like someone else said...why on earth did he say " to get it right"...it is a spiritual thing and the going underwater is just a picture of our death ...and our new risen life in Christ. In reality it has nothing at all to do with the Pastor...he is just the vehicle ...it is something happening in the Spirit between the person and God.

As bbyrd009 said...I too have come across the "multiple baptisms" thing before...it is a side-track at best, and and 'kingdom building' by a new hopeful minister at it's worst. It sound very strange and unbiblical teaching to me.

My own plumb-line is. :- If it doesn't fit in the biblical pattern..."throw it out!! "

I assumed it a Church member who asks to be baptised again and again, cause they don't think they are getting it right. Perhaps because they continue to sin, and want to repent by being baptized again.

Romans 6:3-4
Romans 6:3-7
3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin.

And:

Colossians 2:11-13

11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

Sounds like more than just water, ritual, and symbol.
IF it IS just ritual, why not do it more than once??
It's only water.
It's only ritual.
It's only symbol.

Maybe we shouldn't do it more than once because it's IMPORTANT, since Jesus said to be baptized?

addressing the OP, I read your post, twice. my question to you is this, was it the person getting baptize requested it to be done again? or was it the Pastor, who would just do it on his own, baptizing 2, 3, or 4 times. I have a reason in asking this. I'll be looking for your reply.

In post no. 9 CharlesC thanks everyone, I don't know if he'll be back.
I understood that the PASTOR wanted to keep baptising everyone till something or other was gotten right.

CharlesC and wife left the church because they felt this was not biblical.

Hi, yeah from where I'm sitting this reeks of unbelief for one thing...there is nothing we have to keep doing over and over, other than keeping our faith firmly IN HIM..sorry, AND walking in Love..

i guess there are three real baptisms, that happen IRL, and are not rituals

And when did you literaly go down into the grave with Jesus? As col says we were baptised into his death. We didn't die or get burried, or acended into heaven.

These are all things that are attributed to us and baptise is a picture of them.

We are not made Christian when we are baptised as baptism is a wirness that we are Christian.
