I am so excited! Today, my order finally came in: the Tolle Lege 1599 Geneva Bible!
From the moment I began digesting the text and the notes, I was in love with the Bible! It is an amazing study, and has secured its spot as my go-to bible. Now, I know that there are some people will indefinitely hate this translation, because they claim that this Bible was replaced by the King James because it was inaccurate; that is actually not the truth! Believe it or not, the Geneva was replaced for 2 main reasons:

1.) The King did not like the notes about tyranny; the commentators often refered to tyranny as an evil abomination, and that there was only one King of all; Jesus.
2.) The notes also spoke against divorce that was without a justifiable cause; you couldn't just go around getting married and divorced simply because you felt like it, and that is what King James wanted to do.

Of course, one of my favorite things about this new study bible is the notes; written by reformers such as Oliver Cromwell, John Knox and John Calvin. They provide amazing insight into the Scriptures and their meanings, and are some of the best I have ever read. This is more of a praise post than anything, really. What an amazing blessing the Word of God is!

What are your thoughts?

I depend on the notes often to see if I'm thinking straight. It's a great bible.

To be honest, I half expected the first reply to be someone berating it. Thanks for the refreshing change in pace! I agree, this bible to me feels different than any other kind of study bible I have owned. It seems to hit the nail on the head with every note, and unlike some others is not afraid or ashamed to tell you just what the Scriptures really say, even if you won't like it. Again, thanks so much for the comment!

I wonder how with wider circulation such an edition with notes that say this about divorce and remarriage would go down among evangelicals in North America?

probably how it went over with King James... it would be rejected and people would demand its removal... just like King James did.

Thanks! It is truly a blessing in my life! What a true gift it is to live in a country where I am free to read the Scriptures without worry.... a blessing i find myself often neglecting to be thankful for. The Word of God given to man... getting a new study bible reminded me of just how precious a gift this is.

The Geneva Bible was written by Calvinists for Calvinists. Whatever its merits, the King James Bible surpassed all other English language Bibles and remained the primary English Bible for over 300 years. It is still an outstanding Bible as compared to modern translations.

The truth of the matter is that Five Point Calvinism is a False Gospel. So Christians do not need to go along with that, and the Geneva Bible would simply be promoting Reformed Theology (some of which is fine, and some of which is erroneous).

Awesome! Glad to hear that others enjoy it as much as I do!
I've always enjoyed the KJV, too. And, truthfully, they are pretty much the same Bible to me. I mainly like the notes in the Geneva that James I wouldn't allow.

My "go to" is the God's Word Translation. However, I have fallen in love with the Passion Translation, and can hardly wait until they expand it to include the OT.

Thanks for the comment! To clear up some misconceptions:

1.) This was not made just for Calvinists. Is it Calvinistic? Yes, but so was the vast majority of the christian faith in thode days. The 5 points were not even around until 46 years after Calvin's death... and still the council of dort, comprised of over 150 delegates from various german states, scottland, england, and switzerland all unanimously decreed that Arminianism was heresy. Before that, what we call "Calvinism" was just called Christianity.

2.) The King James was forced to be widely accepted... the King didn't give the people a choice. He forced them to give up their Genevas, and imprisoned and even killed those who wouldn't. He had the Genevas destroyed, and forced the people to use his version. Now, I'm not at all discrediting the KJV... it is a great translation. But the fact that it was so dominant and remains so today is because it was forced to be the dominant translation, and thus al the common people had. I think the Geneva would have absolutely stayed relevant, had the King not had it forcibly removed like an old band-aid.

3.) To me, I find it funny just how big of a misconception is believed about Calvinism. Just the othet day, I was asked if an Arminian can be a christian. Yes, if they believe that they are saved totally and only and permanently by Christ's blood and not at all by their own merit, yes they are christians. Ask an Arminian is a Calvinist can be a christian. The most common answer is a vehmenent NO! Why is this? Why is it that you must put down a belief system you dont even really understand? And to claim it as a false gospel? I am sorrh you feel this way, but if we are being quite blunt here there was only 1 belief system that was unaninmously and officially condemned as a false gospel, and it wasnt Calvinism.

Well that is obviously untrue, and I wonder how many non-Calvinists would make such a ridiculous statement. Everyone who obeys the Gospel is saved by grace through faith in Christ and His finished work of redemption.

Remember, in Calvinism we are all good little robots fulfilling our programs. Calvinists were born saved and everybody else born damned.

God just gave everybody the illusion of having a free will choice.

Oh boy... I thought I smelled the rancid stank of self salvation wafting through the air. Look, it's not my fault that you would rather bash Calvinism and not know what it actually teaches while holding fast to the rotting corps of Arminianism you revived from the condemned heresy grave using necromancy and the dark arts lol. Now, if we are done with the name calling and bashing, why don't we get back to having a peaceful discussion about the amazing gift that is the word of God. I did not start this thread to name call or ridicule... trust me, it seems like that's all
Arminians CAN do.

Not exactly. It is only after being indoctrinated that they commit themselves to the idea that some are elected for salvation and others for damnation. Which is obviously false.

Just one verse should suffice (which is almost identical in the Geneva Bible):

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (Jn 3:17 KJB).

For God sent not his Son into the world, that he should condemn the world, but that the [c] world through him might be saved. (Jn 3:17 Geneva)

The footnote [c] in the Geneva Bible states:
John 3:17 Not only the people of the Jews, but whosoever shall believe in him.

And that refutes Unconditional Election (the U in TULIP). Also mentioning *the people of the Jews* was totally irrelevant, since the Geneva scholars would have know that *world* here means all the inhabitants of the earth.

Yea... Absolutely true! From my understanding he didn't like the notes... Period.

I am a KJV guy... But not one who shuns all other translations.

It seems to me that qhile King James was no friend of the Catholic Church, he was not a friwnd of Protestant bickering either.

He wasn't a perfect Christian (who is?) but he was far from ignorant. We was also pretty shrewd.

In any sense, congets on your gain.

I stated what they believed, not that they were born Calvinist.
