Ear piercing: for sons as well as for daughters: is it appropriate? (plus poll)

PS: Nor me, either.
Like, if a young man's father already wears earrings - as many do - and his mom thinks they are a good idea for the young man as well - as seems not unusually to happen - then by what stretch of anyone imagination can anyone impose a supposed conservative church narrative of "rebellion" against parents, if the young man acquires them also?
PS: Maybe in the past it might have had more to do with wealth; but today studding one's ears can be an inexpensive way of expressing a simplicity and - I guess - sense of completeness. And a lot of ppl think it can work for both genders, right?
As far as I can see, there were three groups of people who wore earrings in the past. Women for beautification and wealth storage. Men, to indicate their status as a slave. Male pirates and Romany for wealth storage. Are modern men trying to be more like women, slaves, pirates or gypsies?

As far as I can see, it's not necessary to project any of those assumptions onto why they do...

It strikes me that ear piercing for men is in some ways comparable to tattoos for women: just as ear piercing years ago was overwhelmingly associated with women but now many men have it done with relish, so also just as tattoos were formerly overwhelmingly associated with men exclusively, yet now so many women relish being tattooed.
I don't know if this makes any sense? you've commented in the past a little about your family's experiences.

Didn't seamen in past centuries wear a ear-ring of gold in one ear, to pay for their funeral in the event of their death. My husband's grandfather came to work in the coal mines in Wales, though formerly a fishermen in Devon; and he wore a gold ear-ring in his ear apparently. It was a common thing for men to have their ears pierced it seems.

Interesting about that detail from your husband's family background. Frankly I think it can be perfectly wholesome for men, young and older, to have their ears pierced and since it's a widespread style it would probably seem sensible for parents to allow it as readily for sons as they tend to do for daughters. (2c...)
