I'm sure it's been covered before but can anyone explain why some OT scriptures we follow now and others we don't? Some quoted this and I'm not sure exactly what to say:The Fulfillment of the Law 17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

What you need to understand here is Christ came not to change the Laws but to fulfill them. You also need to understand there is a difference between Laws,Ordances, and Stautes we are no longer held to Statutes and Ordances. We are under the Lawsbut some Christ has fulfilled. We are always under the Law of the commandmentsSo the trick here is to ditigish between what is Law and what is not and which have been fulfilled Example: the Sabbath Law has been fulfilled Christ is now our Sabbath not a day Sabbath means rest and we are to rest in Christ every day he has become our Sabbath.

What was the purpose of giving the Laws by God in OT?Not for salvation of mankind. But for the guidance to the Jews to live a holy life.It was the measurement of human standard and the requirement of God's standard. Many people died because of breaking the Laws. The punishment of sin against the Law.No one can keep the Laws. No one is sinless according to the Laws. That is why God has sent His Son Jesus Christ to come and offer us Salvation through His atonement sacrifice on the cross.Jesus said that He has fulfilled the Laws. He paid for the penalty of death for us according to the Laws. Whoever believe in Jesus Christ as his/her Savior, he/she is saved becasue of His GRACE.That is GRACE! We don't deserve Salvation by our own standard but we got Salvation by His Grace.Keeping the Laws is not wrong. It is not sin to keep the Laws. It is good to keep the Laws for our own good. God doesn't abolished His Laws. Still valid. But no more punishment of death for breaking the Laws. Jesus has saved us.Grace doesn't mean that we are free to do anything we wants. We still have to keep two commandments given to us by Jesus. Matthew 22:36-4036 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment . 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." NIVLOVE is the sole ingredient of Christianity.Love covers ALL.Do we have love? What is love?Romans 13:1010 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. 1 Corinthians 13:4-134 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Galatians 3: 9 What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator. 20A mediator, however, does not represent just one party; but God is one.
The purpose of the law was to teach us the nature of sin and that we were incapable of keeping from sin on our own.
19 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. 20 Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham. (NLT)
Notice that the law was only meant to be temporary.
24 Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. 25 And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.
Hebrews 8: 13 When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.
The Law was made obsolete by Christ's conquering sin.So what is the status of the Law? We are not to try to follow the Law and the Holy Spirit. Following the Law falls back on us. The Holy Spirit does not lead the Law since he is God. when we live by the Spirit the Law is unnecessary.
Galatians 5: 16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
The whole book of Galatians and the book of Hebrews deals with the forces trying to destroy the early church by trying to force Gentile believers to adopt the Laws of Moses. The Jewish converts were similarly being pressured to return to their Judaic roots. Paul and the writer of Hebrews were adamant that the Law was an unnecessary burden. Paul pressed his case before the council in Jerusalem and was told that Gentiles did not have to become Jewish converts first. They were exempt from the Laws and ordinances with the exception of accepting food offered to idols, sexual immorality, meat from strangled animals and consuming blood. (Acts 15)Unlike the Jews we came to faith directly. Gentiles were never subject to the law and since we came through faith we do not need the law which was made superfluous by Christ. Some people argue that this applies only to the ordinances of the Mosaic law and not the Ten Commandments, but Paul repeatedly says that we are not bound by the Sabbath law which is one of the Ten Commandments. See Romans 14, Galatians 4: 10, Colossians 2:16. If one of the Ten Commandments is not in effect then none is.Some people argue that we can do both, live by the Spirit and the Law since they are both from God. Paul does not make that an option. He says that anyone who lives under the Law is cursed.
Galatians 3: 10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.” 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” 12 This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”
The two ways are very different and incompatible. Galatians 2: 17 But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ has led us into sin? Absolutely not! 18 Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. 19 For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. 20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die. There is nothing wrong with the Law. It was us. I was brought up Seventh Day Adventist. I was taught to keep the Law. The church believes in particular in the Sabbath Law since that it what the church is named after. They worship on Saturday. I know that it is impossible to keep the Laws. The church owns many hospitals and SDA nurses must work on the Sabbath to keep them running. They get exemptions to do this which makes a travesty of the Law.The tenth commandment alone makes it impossible to keep the Law. It was put in their to show precisely that. Legalism results in pride and judgmentalism. Churches that are based on legalism are the kinds of places the Pharisees would have felt at home in. They are not the kinds of places that Jesus had in mind. We are to be full of God's love and grace. That's what living by the Holy Spirit represents. The Holy Spirit knows the heart and mind of God since he is God. When we follow him we always please God.Blessings,Dunamite
