I see no effective difference between wants and desires. I don't agree that Buddhism suggests one cut off their desires, but that the one who desires be cut off instead. In other words, when the one who wants and desires is cut off, it is cut at the root. Therefore, one needn't deal with each individual desire and want, but the one who wants and desires instead.
One cut instead of a death by a thousand cuts.
