the spirit is fairly easily understood when involved with humans if you look at Ps 146:4 Matt. It is used many ways, but it is a part of us, primarily the breath of life, another word for spirit. The KJV actually translates it breath but it is talking about the spirit going out, or life force. Interestingly we all have a part of God's holy spirit in us, as that is what the breath of life is.
