Aaah, the days that have gone by...the dances I have danced...the faces of the boyfriends that I can see as I remember each singer and who I was dating as we danced these dances! ( and my many broken hearts)

Elvis wrote this one in 1956.
Yes, he wrote new words to a very old song replacing the original words written by W.W. Fosdick called "Aura Lee". It was US Civil War favorite under the name of "Aura Lee". Shortly thereafter with another set of words in 1865 it became a West Point class song under the title of "Army Blues". Elvis took hold it when it was a bit over 90 years old to make it a popular in his movie of the same name. I have copy with the original words in song book my mother gave to me many years ago showing that little of its history...
