Water baptism was something the gentile did to become a Jew.

@marks is correct, as I understand it.
Baptism was already a part of Judaism before John the Baptist began baptizing in the wilderness.
They had an indoor baptistry pool. Article link below.

water baptism in Judaism is called a 'mikvah'

mikvah, also spelled Mikveh, or Miqwe, (“collection [of water]”), in Judaism, a pool of natural water in which one bathes for the restoration of ritual purity. The Mishna (Jewish code of law) describes in elaborate detail the requirements for ritually proper water and for the quantity of water required for ritual cleansing. In former times, a mikvah was so essential to each community of Jews that, if necessary, a synagogue could be sold to finance its construction.

Yes, I acknowledged that in my post.

Much love!

Good research point, thanks.
I couldn't remember what it was called. (should have Googled it - LOL)

I need to start a thread on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit to challenge this one.
What do the Acts of the Apostles tell us about the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?

Evidence of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit from the book of Acts
Why didn't the baptized believers in Samaria receive the Holy Spirit?
My question that was ignored on this thread.

FYI, there are already threads on the subject of spiritual gifts that I started posted on the theology forum.

New Beachhead? No, just proper understanding of scripture as relates to the manifestation of the Spirit, or gifts of the Spirit as they are commonly referred to.

Spiritual gifts: unconfusing them. 2 Parts

We can call the Baptism of the Holy Spirit 'BOSS' for short.

Baptism, i.e., water baptism, doesn't bring the Holy Spirit to anyone. It is a symbolic ritual statement of burying the old (sinful) person and returning "resurrected" as the new creation in Christ.

I agree completely.

And Acts 2:38 is one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible. (one of...)
The baptism Peter was calling them to was as you stated above. Then, and only then,
were they eligible to receive the GIFT of the Holy Spirit just as he said.
The GIFT (the promise) of the Holy Spirit. With visible evidence!
(see my new thread - link above)

Acts 2:38 NIV
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Right. I call it a religious ceremony. Defined as an outward sign of an inward reality.

Then you do not believe repentance is effective....which is also required.

Actually JimBeam is wrong and contrary to scripture. Baptism, on the contrary, IS the means by which we all get the Holy Ghost/Spirit

Acts 2:38

38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

So, you are claiming that unbaptized believers do NOT have the Holy Spirit?
Do you actually have more than one flimsy "proof-text" to support that nonsense?

The "one flimsy proof-text" is enough since it comes from God's word, penned by one of his inspired writers. It's in plain English and crystal clear.

Acts 2:38

38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

This contradicts your "proof-text". Now what?

John 7:39 NIV
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,

Ephesians 1:13 NIV
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
