The problem with the Crusades is that they impressed a bunch of farmers into service as soldiers.
Creating an army without proper training or supplies and forcing them to travel across the world creates a situation where those people either die or become criminals. The choices are either (a) starve, or (b) raid the native population for resources the lord didn't/couldn't provide. Both of those happened in equal measures. The people who survived the crusade to the Holy Land were, by the time they got there, very bad men, having pillaged, plundered and raped their way across 2,000 miles.
Pillaging, plundering, etc. These weren't things that only the Crusaders did. It was part of warfare long before them and long after them
