paliggenesia: regeneration, renewal

Original Word: παλιγγενεσία, ας, ἡ
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: paliggenesia
Phonetic Spelling: (pal-ing-ghen-es-ee'-ah)
Definition: regeneration, renewal
Usage: a new birth, regeneration, renewal. properly, the coming of new birth because "born again"; regeneration.

Thayers- παλιγγενεσία- properly, new birth, reproduction, renewal, recreation . Commonly, however, the word denotes the restoration of a thing to its pristine state, its renovation, as the renewal or restoration of life after death.

In English, the word generate means to bring into existence; cause to be; produce. Re-generate basically means again.

So, it means to bring into existence again, renewed, rebirth, recreate, restoration etc......

When God created Adam, Adam was spiritually alive. When they sinned in the garden they died spiritually.

This is what it means when Paul says we were (past tense) dead in sins. ( Ephesians 2:1,5) We were regenerated and brought back to spiritual life (that man was originally created with, hence rebirth, renewed, born anew-again, born of the spirit etc...). A work of God not by mans will or human decision. John 1:13.

Ephesians 2:4-5- But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions

Colossians 2:13
When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses,

Paul says:
(1 Corinthians 2:14 ) But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The natural man is a spiritually dead person who is unsaved. He does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, and he cannot know them. Why? Because they are spiritually discerned.

Then in the next verse Paul says:
(1 Corinthians 2:15) But he who is spiritual judges all things . . .

The word "judges" there basically means to sift, to examine, to decide rightly.

The question is, how does a natural man who does not accept the things of the Spirit of God become spiritual so that he can sift, examine or decide rightly? The correct answer is that God must sovereignly do it.

hope this helps !!!

@Christophany The Lord Jesus also teaches about the new birth in the famous passage in John 3:

"There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." (John 3.1-8)

Just as God breathed in the nostrils of the man and he became a living soul, our birth from above is just that. Jesus is the way the truth and life, the wind blows where it chooses, the breath of God.

@Waiting on him It's all about depending on the work of the Holy Spirit; it is not about trying to extract so called "decisions" by using trick methods comparable to sales techniques.

unfortunately many make a decision based solely upon emotions just like they do with ( love ) and then leave their partner because they have "fallen out" of love. Love like salvation is a commitment, a life long one.

hope this helps !!!

@Christophany As regards "decisions", what I do find objectional is the way professing evangelicals use manipulative, advertising techniques in order to extract so called "decisions" and then supposedly attribute ppl signing on the dotted line, etc., to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Do you think that Adam and Eve were indwelt by the Holy Spirit as we are who are born again?

Much love!

Does this mean that man has no part in his salvation, including that of choice?

Much love!

Good question I'm not 100% sure. I would lean towards saying yes but at best that would be a guess since scripture doesn't say one way or the other. What about you ?

It doesn't say. But I question whether Adam would have sinned had he been indwelt and united to the Holy Spirit, having an uncorrupted flesh.

We sin because we were made sinners by Adam's transgression. And the Holy Spirit makes us completely new, as you've pointed out, to repair that. But now we have the assurance that we are completely dead to sin, separated from sin by resurrection in Christ.

Adam sinned and his sin brought death and condemnation. Our sins are forgiven in Christ, and we have eternal life.

So I'm thinking there was something very different between Adam and ourselves.

Much love!

1 Corinthians 15:45 KJV
[45] And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
