Whenever the three days and three nights of Matthew 12:40 is brought up in a "discussion" with 6[sup]th[/sup] day crucifixion folks, they frequently argue that it is a Jewish idiom for counting any part of a day as a whole day. I wonder if anyone has documentation that shows that the phrase "x" days and "x"nights was ever used in the first century or before when it didn’t include at least parts of the "x" days and at least parts of the "x" nights?

I have just read an article explaining the details of Christ's death and resurrection. Apart from the fact that it had nothing at all to do with Easter, he was not buried on Friday and rose on Sunday. The article delves into the Jewish Feasts of Passover and Unleavened bread which happened one after the other, and it shows from that perspective that Jesus was crucified on Wednesday and rose on Saturday which was the JEWISH SABBATH and which makes sense.

And again, that "someone new" needs to be someone who believes the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week with a 1st day of the week resurrection, and who thinks that the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb, and who tries to explain the lack of a 3rd night by saying that the Messiah was employing common figure of speech/colloquial language of the period.

If I go to the sea-side for the day, I have not been there for 24 hours. It is an idiom. Here is an example from the Bible.

They found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. And they gave him bread and he ate. They gave him water to drink, and they gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. And when he had eaten, his spirit revived, for he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights. And David said to him, “To whom do you belong? And where are you from?” He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite, and my master left me behind because I fell sick three days ago. (1Sa 30:11-13 ESV)

This guy said he had not eaten or drunk for three days and three nights.

Assuming he had breakfast on Monday morning and then fell ill sometime during the day, then he went without food Monday night and all day Tuesday. They found him three days later on Wednesday and gave him food and water.

He was without food Monday night and all day Tuesday. Thy gave him food on Wednesday. He did not eat or drink for one and a half days.

1 Corinthians 15:4 tells us Jesus rose again the third day. Meaning he appeared to Mary on the 3rd day so was not in the tomb on the third day.

I created a video on this subject that perhaps might be helpful.

Jesus Crucified on a Wednesday

Hopefully this helps you with your own studies.

I can inform you of one historical FACT, that Wednesday crucifixionists for many decades from Armstrong began his theories and movement until no more than twenty years ago CONSISTENTLY AND EXCLUSIVELY argued for a First Day of the week - Sunday - Resurrection <<shortly AFTER SUNSET Saturday night>>. 'Paper 59'

...and another reality you seem to be unaware of --

A Fourth Day

The Wednesday crucifixion theory implicates a fourth “day”: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday = four days!

The complication from another angle:

Day One: Fourth Day (Wednesday) First of “three days”: Crucifixion.

14 Nisan. “Buried before sunset.” Day ends: “Sunset”.

Day Two: The Fifth Day (Thursday) 1st of “three nights” …and the 1st “day”.

15 Nisan. Day ends: “Sunset”.

Day Three: The Sixth Day (Friday) 2nd of “three nights” … and the 2nd “day”.

16 Nisan. Day ends: “Sunset”.

Day Four: The Sabbath (Saturday) 3rd of “three nights” … and the 3rd “day”.

17 Nisan. “Resurrection just before Sunset”.

1, According to the Wednesday crucifixion theory, Wednesday all day, crucifixion, death, and, entombment, occur and are finished, “before sunset”.

2, According to the Wednesday crucifixion theory, from entombment

3, counting of the “three days and three nights”, starts and not from death.

4, According to the Wednesday crucifixion theory, the first “night” of the “three days and three nights” follows from after sunset.

5, According to the Wednesday crucifixion theory, reckoning of Day begins “from sunset”.

6, According to the Wednesday crucifixion theory, “from sunset Wednesday”, Thursday begins … the second day!

This explanation is very hard to follow, in my opinion, which is why I made the video.

Facts are hard to Follow, when one attempts to Apply their understanding to what is Changed Facts.

God established Time divisions in simple Terms:
Day, Night, Hours, Weeks, Months, Years, Seasons

God ..Divided Lightness from darkness,
Light called Day.
Darkness Called Night.
The Night (first) Began at Dusk to Sunrise.
The Light (secondary to the darkness) Began at Sunrise to Dusk.
The BEGINNING is Night to Day.
The WEEK Beginning is Day to Night.

Man calls Day and Night ... Day and Night
Man's Day begins 12 o'clock Am ... ends 12 o'clock Pm<--- a measurement of Time.

Man Measures Time in Units:
Days, Nights, Hours, Minutes, Seconds, Months, Years, etc.

"Length" of Gods Days, Nights etc. Are NOT the Same repeated day to day.

Man ATTEMPTS: to Give an Appearence that Every day and Night IS the Same...but Repeatedly "changes" and "Adjusts" the "Appearence"... yearly "changing" the unit of the CLOCK...gain an Hour, lose an Hour. Change the number of days in a month...28, 30, 31.
ZONE the Units of Time, geographically specific.
Change the Names of the Months.
Change the Position of the Seasons.

The Scriptural First Month coincided with Beginning, Birth, Springing Forth.
Was called: Nisan...meaning: Beginning.
Season: Spring. Things coming Alive.

Man's First month has been changed To:
January: coincides with Janus, Roman god of Beginning and Ending.
Season; as per Geographical location.
Summer: Hot, things beginning to die.
Winter: Frigid, Dormant, things Dead.

1- day Creation (while all is Dark)
2-5 day Making preparing (making the Dark into Light)
7 day Rest

1 day Beginning Life (in Darkness)
2-6 Day Living Life, making Prepared for Life and Death and Life.
7 day Rest / Death

It's Gods Good and Holy creation.
It - the Creation-
Dark, (some Made Light,) (some remain Dark)
* it became Corrupt-
* it spends its lifetime becoming MADE restored and Renewed (or not)
* it All rests, on last day, Death knowing nothing doing nothing.
* Life RISEN in Light or in Darkness.
* Light Lives...Darkness overcome, Destroyed.

* Jesus' Body: 3 days, 3 nights in Tomb (custom burial of Jews)
Death: Wed day 1
In Tomb: Wed Night 1
Dead Body in Tomb: Thur day 2
Dead Body In Tomb: Thur Night 2
Dead Body IN Tomb: Friday day 3
Dead Body IN Tomb: Friday day 3

Body RISEN Out of Tomb: Saturday sun rising

Saturday Jewish preparation Day,
sunrise-dusk

Saturday Jewish Sabbath - Dusk- Sunrise

Jesus' Soul: 3 days, 3 nights in the Center of the Earth

Wed - (9th hour) - Day- 1
Wed - Night - 1
Thur - Day - 2
Thur - Night - 2
Friday - Day - 3
Friday - Night - 3
Saturday - Sun rising Soul returns to Body.

Jesus' Spirit: (Power) Remains With Him.

1st Day of WEEK-
Sunrise- Sunday- Sabbath over

Women go to Tomb to remove face Napkin covering and Annoint Head/ face with oil...
AND...Place spices on Linen wrapped on Jesus' Body...

Body not In Tomb.
In Tomb IS Linen Wrap and (not touching the Linen wrap...but off to side is Folded Napkin).

Outside of Tomb women see a man, but do not recognize Him by sight. They hear Him and know it is Jesus.

He says to Not touch Him...Because He has Not Ascended to the Father (who is in Heaven).
They go as directed to tell the Disciples He is Risen, they saw Him, He is Going to Ascend to the Father.
They doubt, run to the Tomb to see if it IS Empty.
Later that same first day of the WEEK..."Sunday".
The Disciples are gathered together.
Jesus Bodily comes among them.
They SEE, they Believe.

Important to Note:
The Spirit of God ... Jesus Blew UPON them.
(Not IN Them) on their outer Image.
AND said as The Father Sent Him, so Also Does He Send the Disciples.
Jesus came to Earth in the Likeness as a man, and With the Express "outer" Image of Gods Spirit UPON Him.

It is Later we Learn Jesus IS the Christ, the POWER of God, and IS Spirit.

It also is there after, those same Disciples, those women and Other Disciples, received the INDWELLING Spirit (Power) of God.

How can it lie Against Scripture if there is No Scripture as you claim?

Really you think it is A Scandal if two do not come to the same Conclusion on which Day Jesus died and which day He ease back to life?

Pfft! If it Really was all that important...don't you think it would be highlighted in Scripture?

Jesus said to Remember Him....not remember His Birth-Date, Death-Date, Resurrection-Date.... those things are curiosities of men.

Keep your hat on...no need to get in a huff...

Yes, I made the video because the issue comes up in apologetics forums, but I also make the same point you did. There isn't an important theological doctrine that hinges on whether Jesus was crucified on a Friday, Thursday or a Wednesday.

Good point.

A worse conclusion is impossible. "ALL SCRIPTURE" said the risen Christ, MUST NEEDS HAVE TESTIFIED OF HIM as proof, both, of Him, AND, of Scripture, that they - Christ and Scripture - ARE TRUE.

"Most important of AL" said Paul, "I tell you that "ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURE Christ died, was buried and THE THIRD DAY ROSE".

Matthew calls upon the Witness of the Holy Spirit through the SCRIPTURES that Jesus was raised from the dead "on the day after the Preparation" which was the Seventh Day, "Sabbath before the First Day of the week .. THE THIRD DAY (He, Jesus) said He would rise" but you two mortal sinners no better than I am and I am the worst of sinners, when it is YOU challenged, it's <<not an important doctrine>>. But as long as you two can blabber on and in blissful ignorance OSTENSIBLY agree, it is the alpha and omega in knowledge and understanding of <<theological doctrine>>.

If there were but a single contradiction in THESE MOST IMPORTANT SCRIPTURES CONCERNING THE CHRIST -- 'doctrine', THERE IS NO TRUTH IN ANY OF THE SCRIPTURES.

Big mouths!

I believe Gods Calendar was a whole lot different than (time passing to modern man's Calendar.)

In the Beginning the Earth (dry land) was Created.
A mass of Dark Dry land.
Light was Spoken to Appear upon the Earth.
First Day of Earth Day, was Dark Evening and Light Morning.

The Days Established, First, second, third and so forth.

First Month (for man), required a man present to See/ Observe a Dark Evening.

The first Evening Sign of a Beginning Month, was Observed, (by man, once a man was Created "outside" of the Garden).

What man Observed was the Light of the Sun, being reflected ON a Dark moon..Evening...and the Beginning of First Day.

The Days would continue ... as man could See a reflection of the Suns light upon the moon, making something Dark (moon) appear lit.

The Seeing and NOT seeing the Suns reflection upon the Moon, determined the months.
The months determined Seasons, by What occurred during particular Months.
Season 1
* Scattered seeds (dying) beginning to grow, springing to a Visible Living thing.
Season 2
* The growing Things observed producing Fruit.
Season 3
* The Fruit Observed ripe falling from plants.
Gathered...called Harvest.
Season 4
* The Gathered Harvest a prepreation to Sustain / feed a man when plants become, dormant, resting from labor, or dying, Living "Living seeds" to die and repeat the same Seasonal process.
^ That reveals to an Observing man, the timeframe of A Year.

(To note:
Scattering of Seeds- Gods handiworks...
SEEDS in its own kind of things AND seeds from God upon the Earth).
Gen 1:
[11] And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

Dead seeds- a seed intact, with its outer shell produces nothing.
A seed that is dead refers to the seed Opening, its outer shell broken, that it may thereafter one time Reproduce.)

Man has tried to calculate the precise moment a man can See the First evening Appearence of the moon...and thus dictate the evenings, mornings, days, months, seasons, years...

AND of course there is that little thingy of the Earth becoming "Divided/broke apart from one land mass".

AND man's invention of Time Zones, daylight savings Time, adding and deleting a full night and day in their established month of February...

It is man's guesswork...and from that "guesswork" trying to Argue "and Absolute" Timeframe Jesus' Body was crucified, "Absolute" Timeframe Jesus' Body was resurrected.

There is an Enormous Difference between saying ...
I think This Timeframe seems plausible to me...
And an Other claims they Have discovered THE Only True Timeframe of Jesus' Bodily Death and Jesus' Bodily Resurrection.

Mark 15:
[25] And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

John 19:
[13] When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth....
[14] And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
[15] But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him...
[16] Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

Men have calculated...the Third Hour is 3pm.
So Biblically the First Hour begins at...12:00 high noon?

Uh???

And isn't Passover Sabbath Prepared in the Evening before the Sun Rises ... that evening And light being one day?

Again; men can try to calculate...with a corrupted premise...and claim it appears plausible to Them...
But to Dictate an Individuals calculation on a false premise, IS Absolute... is hokey.

IMO- the big picture is a parallel between the the Nature of plants and mankind...both having come forth out of seeds and naturally sustained by the Earth...and discovering "that" sustaining IS Temporary...and a Permanent Sustaining of mankind is effected by and through a man's acceptance of Gods Offering and WAY for God Himself to Sustain a man Forever.

Glory to God,
Taken

Big mouths!
Brother, I don't understand your attitude or your point. In my video I prove that Christ rose on the third day. I also help people understand that the Gospel writers are using Jewish time reckoning, which begins the day at twilight each day. Once we take this into account, we understand for instance, that although Jesus died on a Wednesday, he was actually buried on Thursday, which begins at twilight on Wednesday.

Now, some people might appreciate that my explanation above is confusing, because verbal descriptions of a complex subject are hard to follow. One really needs to see a picture of the calendar to visualize and understand the time references in the New Testament. Once we can see that the end of Wednesday is just an hour away from the beginning of Thursday, taking place at twilight, then the true picture begins to form.

Others may not appreciate how challenging it can be until they attempt to search out the issue for themselves. I hope that my video will help guide these folks to a clear understanding on their own, given a bit of a lesson on Jewish time reckoning and various idiomatic expressions.

If you benefit more from words rather than images, then that's okay. Each person is wired different and there is plenty of room for both a verbal and a visual explanation.

Be at peace brother. And may the Lord richly bless you.
