Christianity isn't a "tradition of men", its a Gift from God.

Wikipedia and many people would say...."Christianity is a religion", but it really isn't.
A religion, is not God made, its man made.
Also, religion, is the idea that by "self", by effort, by doctrine, dogma, a person can become :

1. IN touch with God
2. Become God or become LIKE God.

Do you believe you can lose your salvation?
Well, that is a "tradition" or a teaching that comes from a person who misinterpreted bible verses.
It started there, and then it became a doctrine regarding Legalism.
Many are enslaved by this false doctrine.

Christianity is God coming to us.
That is not a religion, that is a miracle.

Traditions of Men would include :

1.) Denominations, : generally, but not all. As there are some very good denominations, but its difficult to find one that isn't a hybrid of the Bible + Some Teacher's ideas.

2.) Religion is a man made tradition.

Questions. Questions Matthew! LOL

What do you mean by opposed to what?

As opposed to what you wrote, 'we respond by our own perceived and taught notions that come with the territory of learning the bible from others.' How else are we to respond beyond our own education and experience?

What do you mean your pastor preached on how the bible is the not the thing?

Scary huh? He was emphasizing ours is a living God, whose Spirit dwells within. He downplayed our book, saying every religion has a book. He further emphasizes how many languages the Bible has yet to be translated into. Then asked how these people are able to conduct their lives?

The answer is in communing with the Holy Spirit of God.

What does it mean to you to have the Spirit of God in You?

My God man! Are you a new Christian?
  1. What is the purpose of becoming a Christian? To be saved by Jesus, the Anointed.
  2. How are we saved? By faith in the grace of Jesus.
  3. How do we know we are saved? By being marked or sealed by the Holy Spirit, dwelling within us. See Ephesian 1:13-14.
Read Ephesians 1. And click here for more verses.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

What do you mean about -> 'thesis statement in this thread'? Opposed to what?

Even Amadeus mentioned your OP was too long to follow. Please express, in a summary 1 or 2 sentence (short paragraph if you must), the thought you want to discuss?

As opposed to what; learning from the Bible ourselves? My pastor recently preached on how the Bible is not the thing. The thing is to have the Spirit of God in you....
That is not a new subject to me. Expressing myself sometimes not very carefully [or even carefully LOL] on this forum and others I have spoken on this very subject. Some people condemn me heartily for that, but others, (only a few I would guess) readily understand my point of view and even a very few espouse it.

What would some say if I were to say, 'the Bible unopened and unread is like Jesus hanging dead on the cross before he resurrected?' That is... it is a dead book but the potential is there.

But the subject here is the traditions of men. Making the Bible into a Nehushtan [II Kings 18:4]! Is that not what men sometimes do when they follow the lead of their own head instead of the lead of the Holy Spirit? Would this also be a tradition men have developed to the extent that they insist upon it get angry with anyone who does not line up precisely with it when they do not call the written Bible the Word of God?

...There are people who are young that might latch on, or new in Christ, or are interested in just the topic of Traditions of Men and what the bible has to say according to it.

Everything we do as humans is a choice. We can or we wont.
Why do young people [or anyone for that matter] choose to attend a church meeting or join a Christian discussion forum like this one? Some really want to learn about God. Some really want to teach about God. Some ___. Fill in the blanks with other reasons why people choose to be there or here. Traditions versus truth! What is it we want? What is it we need?

Normally enjoy doing my own work when it comes to learning about the bible, and sharing it. For a long time now it has been on my heart to desire to continue in teaching the bible.

Thank you for commenting so can give you that information this was all done by my own hand from the help of God by the spirit, and also a Thompson Chain reference bible.
I am remembering here my first Pentecostal pastor [from January 1976]. I don't have much good to say about him except this one thing. He did put it in my mind to buy a Thompson Chain Reference KJV Bible back in the 1970's. Eventually I received a second one. The first one I gave to a friend who I thought would make good use of it.

I was probably mistaken there, but the second one my wife bought for me on 02-14-1990. I still have it. I don't read it regularly any more as I don't want to wear it out. I keep it rather for study and reference as it is very full of information to go along with the scriptures themselves.

Interesting. We dare not make the Bible an idol. Properly speaking, it is NOT the word of God. It merely contains a copy the word of God. Some seem to worship the Bible, especially KJV.

Our God is Spirit, not parchment.

As each writer wrote what he wrote it was under the inspiration of God. What does it take to receive the message, God's message? Some atheists may have started their way to God reading the Bible for the wrong purpose... but then something smote their heart and the purpose became the right one. What was that, but the Holy Spirit?

I have definitely known one atheist who started with God like that. He was searching the Bible for ammunition to use against any Christian who would dare to engage him...but then... he read Psalm 15! He used to be a member here but was banned... [Don't ask about that on the public forum!]

What is traditional for men based on the Bible and what is Alive based on the same Bible?

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life." II Cor 3:5-6

...maybe people will read and learn about whether or not they will end up trusting men and their traditions or trusting God...
Getting back to the traditions of men, the Jewish rabbis had developed a whole set of teachings based upon their own interpretations, and not necessarily in line with Scripture. They have been incorporated into the Talmud. As Christ said, they were more concerned with tithing mint and cumin than in the weightier matters of the Law -- love, justice, and mercy. And the parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates what the problem was.

When it comes to non-Jewish traditions, both the Catholic and Orthodox churches have a body of teachings called "Holy Tradition". They have placed this on the same level as Scripture, and unfortunately many of those teachings are contrary to Scripture. Many of these teachings came from the Early Church Fathers (ECF) who taught a mixture of truth and error in many cases.

When it comes to those who are neither Catholic nor Orthodox, but regard themselves ad Protestants, we have the same issue of the traditions of men over-ruling the Scriptures. And these mainline denominations have generally become apostate and even lawless.

Which tells us that every believer must carefully examine every doctrine and practice of his or her church in the light of Scripture. The Bible says "Prove all things, hold fast to that which is good". So the onus is on every Christian to make sure that he or she is not ensnared in the traditions of men.

Yes. Good prayer, Lol.

As a long standing member here who has discussed this issue with others several times, I would suggest you might wanna scale things down for the OP, and maybe introduce the topic with a third of that content to start. You can always add to the thread the rest of it once the discussion gets underway. But on forums, introducing a thread like that is kinda like going up to a person and saying, "Hi, my name is such and such. Have you ever thought about how this situation leads into this problem and then that problem creates a new problem with it's own set of difficulties, and then you are faced with a choice between Option A, which will result in these things happening, or Option B which will result in a whole new set of circumstances? Of course, there's always C, D, E, and F, which all have their own particular set of advantages and disadvantages...." And five minutes later you are still talking.

When you finally stop, you realize whoever you were talking to walked off about four minutes ago.

Just a heads up. You will get more viewership if you shorten your posts.

God bless,
Hidden

Thank you for the advice, Hidden.

2.) Religion is a man made tradition.

Thank you for your post, Behold! Was talking about reading about the traditions of men earlier, and me and Mother read through Mark chapter 7 verses 1 through 24?

It talked about how the Pharisees see Yeshua and His Disciples eating with unwashed hands. They question Yeshua, and Yeshua tells them ; that they disregard Gods commandment by their tradition which was handed down by their own elders. (Priesthood, Animal sacrfices, burnt offerings) -> which is described as washing of hands, and also washing up of cups, which is a picture and image type for us.

Which is that a person can look clean from the outside.

However when the verses go onward Jesus Christ after walking away from the Pharisees and Scribes, his disciples ask Him what Yeshua had meant ....

Yeshua goes on to explain to the disciples it is not what goes into the persons mouth that defiles them (pertaining to food.) Food goes into the stomach and exit, but what comes from with-in a person and outward is what defiles a human being.

This was what Yeshua Christ had said to the disciples, after having left the Pharisees and Scribes, once entering a house along the way.

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them.

21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,

22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.

23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Questions. Questions Matthew! LOL

As opposed to what you wrote, 'we respond by our own perceived and taught notions that come with the territory of learning the bible from others.' How else are we to respond beyond our own education and experience?

Hello Wrangler,

Yes questions are a good way to receive any answers and also have an understanding of someone who you are talking to, and what may be their own view point. Believe it is always to have a good understanding between individuals to be able to get clear communication with each other. :)

How are we to respond beyond our own education and experience?

If understanding what you are saying correctly ; The only encouragement would give to this is to continue to study for yourself the bible, (My own person recommendation would for bible is KJV, (Did use NIV but stopped liking), NKJV, New Living Translation (6th grade reading level, and still very educational bible being a person goes slow enough to understand what they are reading, and take time to really get an general understanding of at least all of the Gospels : Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

Praying and reading the scriptures and getting a grasp on what is being said, to who, by who, to whom, for whom, when, where, what, how, why, and the learning is all going to depend on a person and the time they desire to expound on such an the more they are able to learn about God, and the promises He gives, and the lessons that the Lord Jesus Christ has to teach, about a time in the past long ago when there was a man, who was the Son of God, walking around like us today. Whom experienced everything on earth, from all temptation and never giving in. From all bitterness, and hatred, and inward malice. He was not ashamed to die for any one because He loved everyone He knew that He had to die...

There was hope however. Father raised the Son back up from the dead, the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords of Nazareth who loved, cared, healed, many sick with palsy, diverse sickness, cast out demons, the wind obeyed the Lord Jesus Christ.

Would agree with your pastor. God is a living God, who gives the spirit in and through the Lord Jesus Christ, and the spirit of Christ, and the holy spirit reside with-in believers. Christ Jesus lives with-in us by the spirit according to (Galatians 2:20)

My God man! Are you a new Christian?
  1. What is the purpose of becoming a Christian? To be saved by Jesus, the Anointed.
  2. How are we saved? By faith in the grace of Jesus.

Hello Amadeus,

Why do young people [or anyone for that matter] choose to attend a church meeting or join a Christian discussion forum like this one?

Would like to answer your question: personally to be able to associate with others if given a chance to. To help, people learn about the bible, and to understand that if a persons desires to understand they can, they also very much so can ask for wisdom from God, who gives to all freely,

Any one who has and wants to know something about the bible, should ask questions about anything and everything they may have to see or observe with others, and continue to learn about God and the Lord Jesus Christ if they can find time in their day to do so, if they choose to do so.

The Thompson Chain is a very nice bible; received a NJKV one, and there is so much useful information there, with so many broad topics, with all of the scriptures there to go read, and you can look and see the context of everything going around in the bible by scriptures using scriptures and expounding even further your knowledge of God, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

That is very interesting you have one. Believe this is a 1997 edition TC NJKV - There is a mans signature on it called James M. Aseby ~ This could be a dead mans bible.

Thank you so much for taking time to explain that to me. Because me and my mom was talking about traditions of men today. Kind of answered this in the same post, to (Behold) in the post above. When it comes to looking at the traditions of men. This is very helpful in understanding of early church history. Enoch111

The Word of God is the filter through which every spiritual matter must be examined. Which means that every Christian must devote his or her time to a careful study of Scripture (which is hard work). But today there are a large number of Bible study tools available, e.g. Bible Hub. However, in the end believers must ask the Lord to show them the truth, since the Holy Spirit has been given to lead us into all truth.

Well on a lighter note, if you are dead then it is, yes, a dead man's bible! Is that what you meant? No, I suppose you were referring to a man who put his signature on it.

Consider this! I have been reading the Bible in German since 1978. Early in 2014 my German Bible was falling badly apart in spite of numerous repairs. My wife got online and found a used Luther Bible which we bought rather quickly. I read it regularly until last year. I stopped because I wanted to preserve the Bible which in spite of its age is still in pretty good condition. It was printed in Germany in 1922. With an old fashioned fountain pen someone had written on the cover page:

"Feb. 25 - 1926 To Mother from A.B."

Is it likely that it is a dead woman's Bible considering it is now 99 years old. How old would the mother need be if she were still living? Imagine she lived in Germany before Herr Hitler came to power. How many people in Germany today have personal memories of that time period between the two world wars? Just a curiosity.

A good answer! However you say that they "must", while we both know that in fact the number of people who really press in like that using what is available is probably quite small considering the number of people who are called "Christians".

Jesus, who is God, is above the Law.
His Holiness, makes the Law look like Ice as compared to the sun.
The law was not made for God, it was made as a means to define a human's lost condition.
Jesus did a lot of things that caused the Legalists in his day (Pharisees) to climb walls.
Jesus liked to heal on Shabbat, for example, in front of the Legalists.

These are verses you can find in the bible from Isaiah up to 1 Peter, that all have to pertain to the traditions of Men.

As the bible is an enjoyment to look at and read, and seek to understand the things of God and the Lord Jesus Christ - His Son - The Son of God, who is our Lord.

Questions always seem to arise from new believers and even from older people in the faith, about many different topics in the bible.

When asked these questions - Depending on whom may be bring forth the question ; normally as humans we respond by our own perceived and taught notions that come with the territory of learning the bible from others.

Many things are handed down through traditions in families, and also according to the history of the brick and mortar churches that you and I have access to today.

Aside from this notion: There are many people whom are in the faith, that will give answers based of their own understanding, theological belief, viewpoint, and world viewpoint.

These are the bible verses, you can go and look at -: Even the whole Chapter of where they are found to get a grip on the context of what is being spoken of from the bible itself.

You are also freely able to Ask God to help you understand what you are reading, and to have spiritual understanding, and formulate your own thoughts of what the text is saying by the spirit of Christ/Holy Spirit guiding you.

What you do with this information is totally up to you : These are freely given.

Is: 29: 13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Reading this chapter in context, talks about a place called Ariel; a city where David was dwelling. It goes on to talk about 'God's Judgement on Jerusalem'. It talks about people who are in blindness of disobedience, and may other things. It also talks about the verse here we have now in front of us verse 13: Which was spoken by (Paul?) later on in Romans?

Either way you can see here that the people in that day, were speaking about the Lord with their mouth, even with their lips honouring God, however their hearts were not no where near God at all, and their respect towards God wasn't by teaching what God taught. Instead the people taught what they decided to teach by their own precept - rather than Gods.

Matthew 15:
3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
The very start of the context for this chapter in Matthew 15; is the Scribes and Pharisees who came from Jerusalem, came to Jesus - Asking Him, why Does His disciples transgress the traditions of the elders? (verse 2.) - And Jesus Christ answered from verses 3 to 6.

As you can see, that scribes and Pharisees were trying to pull one over on Jesus Christ - However Yeshua understanding this asked them a question back in response ->

Why do you transgress the commandment of God by your own tradition?

For God commanded saying honor your father and mother - > He that curses father and mother are to be put to death. -> At this point in Jerusalem the people had gone far away from the Law God has made and the scribes and Pharisees there were living by their own rules, so they did not have to be put to death whenever they decided to put their father or mother on hold when it came to helping them by placing and saying I have given to God already what has been done and am to busy for you and can not help now.

So because of them living by their own traditions they made God's commandments null and void -> which was to Love God first, and Love Your neighbour as yourself.

They placed their mother and father last by not helping them which was punishable by the punishment of death according the Law back then which Christ Jesus came and fulfilled.

Mark 7:
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
Okay, so the opening to Mark 7 is : The Pharisees and some of the Scribes came to Yeshua Christ, having come from Jerusalem.

Pay attention to what is being said very carefully through verses 3-8.

You can see that the Pharisees and Scribes are appalled by the Disciples of Yeshua, that they did not wash their hands -> according to the traditions that they had kept and had attained for many years. Washing their hands to be clean before eating, also washing the outsides of cups and plates. All of these things were traditions of Men.

What does washing hands, indicate as a picture? A cleaning of the outside of man. To appear clean but inside they are not clean.

Jesus Christ is the answer, whom makes us clean with-in by God renewing our mind, and renewing our hearts. The cleaning comes from with-in and the outside of us as humans really doesn't mean as much. You can appear as clean as you desire, but can most certainly be inside - dead dry bones - with no warmth and a stone cold heart.

God can restore those things with-in you, by our fleshly mind, and stony heart, with a resurrection of having a spiritual mind, renewed creation in Christ, renewed heart, and renewed mind from spiritual rebirth.

Either way just notice: That these are traditions of men when the scribes are appalled on the account of the disciples are not washing their hands before eating.

Galatians 1:14 And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

Here in Galatians you will see Paul speaking about his former life. If you would like more context please start from verse 1 onward. This is talking about how Paul very advanced in Judaism, beyond many other people in his own nation, being exceedingly zealous for the traditions of his fathers before Him.

Paul do believe - persecuted the church, and had people killed being a zealot in his former life before meeting Christ Yeshua on the road to Damascus.

So here you can see even the Apostle Paul speaks against the traditions of men at least what pertained to him, and his own life experience -> Christ Yeshua; And God of course changed him, by the holy spirit.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
This is a warning to the Colossians; in Chapter two Paul is telling the Colossians here to be mindful, not to carry on with the traditions of men, that followed after the rudiments of the world by their own worldly understanding, and philosophy and vain deceit.

They are being warned to be on guard to not fall captive to the thinking of men and the wisdom they had to give ; and instead to focus on Christ Yeshua, and continue having faith in Him, and focus rather on spiritual things rather than the world itself (in a sense of becoming lost in what the world has to give compared to what God has to offer and give unto them - even us as believers now today)

Titus 1:14 : Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
This is a book named Titus wrote by Paul to Titus (am starting to fore tell these things now) - anyway, Titus had a task to do while he was in Crete. One of those jobs was to teach the elders there not to give heed to Jewish fables, - do not give heed to commandments of men - that have turned from the truth of Christ Yeshua.

1 Peter 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
This is from Peter, who was writing to exiles scattered abroad remind them how to live before God our Father, of the Lord Jesus Christ. To be careful to not get mixed in with corruptible things (the world), and that is not of God, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I think religiously speaking two of the biggest traditional celebrations by man is Easter and Christmas, I don't know which is bigger.

Hello Behold,

Thank you for your insight and view points here. :)

What are the concepts or the is the definition of Legalism?

I think religiously speaking two of the biggest traditional celebrations by man is Easter and Christmas, I don't know which is bigger.

Hello Robert,

You know you are probably right about this as far as our national holidays celebrated here in America, these are the only two concepts that can think of when it comes down to tradition that has been passed down through the years.

Believe Enoch111, shared even more detailed insight to some traditions, that are held by men, this could even wave out even into the idea of traditions using the bible that involve indoctrination of a individual into those things of a cult.

Here is what Enoch111, had to say here below. You have any more thoughts on these things?

Thank you for your post, Robert.

5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

Lol, the first miracle performed at Cana the wash pots where He converted the water in them to wine was the very water the guests had washed their hands in prior to entering the feast.

I’m not certain what it is you are trying to say.

Hello WOH,

What does that mean to you? - The changing of water to wine - in my mind indicates a change with-in the cup compared to the outside which stayed that same.

I just mentioned it because it seemed to be a mockery of their traditions, while at the same time illustrates a transformation an internal one.
