Now to finish the last verse of the 1st meaning for the previous age....
next verse 30.....
..... And then the sign of the Son of Man shall appear in heaven. Then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory...
..Now the use of the Son of Man is deliberate. This was the common title Christ used when conversing with all people, especially the Pharisees. This was a personal message to the religious order, that this man will return again with judgment and the wrath of physical war and utter death and physical destruction! That their age would come to a final end!
The sign was not the physical Son of Man, seen in the skies at all. It is the dark clouds of war brewing in the distance and getting literally closer. The glory of the Son of Man is seem through and as the heathen Roman armies, so many of then, with so many weapons, not just for days or weeks or months, for YEARS!
the sign of overwhelming forces that surrounded, especially Jerusalem.
And the 'nations shall mourn,' at the site of this fear, of the literal nation and the left tribes of Israel and other nations or tribes in the land of Judea. They also realized their personal time with God was over, they remembered Christ and his disciples and others, and knew Christ was now in power and King of the heavenly Kingdom.
next, verse 31.....And he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other....
This is the two-fold literal depiction of 1., the disciples and other leaders of the newly formed 'Church', considered human messengers (angels). The trumpet call sounded as the urgent warning to spread the gospel, also to flee Jerusalem at a specific time during the let up of the Roman siege, and go into the literal high country for physical safety. And the believers heeded this warning and command and were gathered together in safety and refuge. And 2.. continued the spread the gospel (the trumpet, as Moses made one to call and gather the assembly together) to all the other nations with deliberate force to gather the Body of Christ to him, as it was already underway since Pentecost.
..so this is the 1st meaning of Matt 24:29-31 that the generation of Christ would have understood it.
--now to the 2nd meaning, for this new age....
