When was grace given?

I just found out about this amazing text...

2 Timothy 1:9 8God 9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Yes I have read through the bible front to back but missed the gravity of this text.
