Why don't we enforce the biblical prescriptives on hair length for men and women?

My wife doesn't like when I let my eyebrows grow out.

.
Sometimes I'll get these rogue eyebrow hairs that'll stick out of the bird's nest. My wife insists these absolutely MUST be trimmed to the length of its compadres.

I can't find any place in the Bible where it talks about eyebrows.

In 1 Corinthians 11:2-12 you will notice the initial word is not regarding hair but is rather about Christ being the Head of the church. Then begins the parable using hair as a rational and parable regarding the order of headship. It is regarding this order (not actually regarding hair at all), that Paul then explains, that if a woman has no covering, it is as though the church (Bride/women) has no Christ, and if a man (Christ) is covered (as with long hair) it is as if Christ is covered and not revealed (of which there is more to be said--but this is enough):

Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. 6For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. 7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.
Granted. But hair is discussed as well.
If only headship, how could a married woman pray or prophesy with her head uncovered?
And if uncovered, what is meant by "shorn". (shaved)

Where I get my haircut, they call it "Rooney removal". (Andy Rooney)
I ask that they remove 20 years. (down to the quick)

I'm one of the few on here who was a practicing Mennonite- with a covering. I quit the covering and garb about a couple of years ago.

I believe the covering is for wearing in church (keep in mind the end of this chapter says the church has "no other such practice'- this is a practice of the church, this is what they do) to keep men from being distracted from a woman's beautiful hair during worship, which would bring shame her husband. (See vs 5. The husband being her head. Not her physical head.)

But outside of the church, I do not wear one. Part of that reason is the verse uses the requirement in the church. Now if we were outside of the church, and I was praying with other men, still likely necessary. Basic applicable common sense if you understand the purpose.

I work in public and have to maintain professionalism so I did cut my hair to chin length. I came to decide this was okay, because it is still feminine and growing six feet of hair is not and has not ever been practical and Biblical times, more than likely definitely not safe or hygienic.

So I think, obviously cutting is okay. Did God ask us to trip over our hair? I don't remember that part.

Mennonite men keep their hair short. Does that mean a man who disagrees and grows his hair long is loved less by God? No. I don't believe so.
Thanks for joining us on this topic. You have a unique perspective, having been raised Mennonite. (or former)
Interesting how you worked this out in your own life. And your understanding of it. Like...

"I believe the covering is for wearing in church ... to keep men from being distracted from

And...
"Mennonite men keep their hair short. Does that mean a man who disagrees and

That first bit reminds of the reasoning behind head coverings for Muslim women.
Did you ever do a double-take when you saw a Muslim woman while you were a Mennonite?
Do Mennonite women have some of the same kinship we see among Muslim women.
They typically seem so happy to me. Not sure why. - LOL

Actually to be honest, I am not sure what they're reasons are. I haven't looked into it enough but there are some things that both religions will agree are sins.

Either way, I got the idea of loose pants from women of another religion for modesty purposes.

You'll see they'll wear wide leg pants and long loose tunic shirts. I wore long skirts because today's pants accentuate a lot.

I'm waiting to the rest of my wardrobe using their method, only not as extreme. At one point, I figured tighter shirts would be comfortable and by modern day world standards, average and appropriate.

Well, I was wrong and I found out a kid was talking about me in an inappropriate way. So now I have to fix it.

He should've waxed those things. But I guess he was peculiar enough as he was. "Y'ever notice...?"

I've got a special little battery-operated mustache trimmer on the shelf under the top of my end table. My wife doesn't mind my beard but she insists on a neat mustache and eyebrows. For her, it's a deal-breaker.

By that same logic...the Temple would be stone and not His body, and Jesus a baby sheep. However:

“To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, 12so that ‘Seeing they may see and not perceive, And hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, And their sins be forgiven them.’ ”
13And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? Mark 3:11-13
PS, Perhaps you should have just started a thread on modesty, then spiritual meaning could be legitimately avoided. :(

But that doesn't answer his question. Did you understand the question?

RC Sproul had good take that I think and hope both sides could appreciate.

It is rather that his question does not address the issue.

In which case, I will ask you: Did you understand the issue?

Sir, with all due respect, and I do not mean to be rude, I feel like you are stubborn and shut out other people.

I have been here years before and I am trying so hard to put this eloquently. You are older and have grown your garden. You know what you know is there, and peering over a fence to judge your neighbors land is just a sport. But you can't see much unless you went to join them and looked more closely.

But I won't mind it. What good would it do me?

So...correction and gifts and speaking plainly are not a part of your preferred gospel. Terrific. Ignore me then.

Thanks, but I'm not referring to the OT law.
I'm quoting the NT.
(also check out post #26 above) Do you cover your head when you pray? (see verse 13 below)

1 Corinthians 11:3-6. 13-15 NIV
But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man,[a] and the head of Christ is God.
4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head.
5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off;
but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
[7-12]
13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
1 Cor 11:3…”the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” Everyone has a head above them…even Christ.

So, to me this is really about headship….the man is the head of his family, then his wife, and then their children. Headship is not dictatorship however, and a godly woman knows her place in God’s arrangement. As God said in Eden…the woman was created as “a complement” to her husband…IOW, they complemented one another, balancing out what was needed for the family unit to function as God intended. Just as a motor vehicle does not have two sets of controls, so the family unit has one appointed driver. The one in the passenger seat may be the navigator, helping the driver to negotiate difficult conditions, but has no control of the vehicle.

As family head, the buck stops with him, because it is his responsibility to care for the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of his wife and children. It’s not about power, but about love and accountability. Jesus led by example as the head of the congregation of his disciples…..he cared for them like a shepherd cared for the sheep in his care. First century shepherds were not the owners of the sheep and were accountable to their Master for any negligence or loss that was preventable. Jesus showed extraordinary care for his Father’s sheep….because God is head over Christ.

For the woman, a head covering was a display of submission to her husband’s headship. If her husband was present or not, and she prayed without a head covering, it showed disrespect because she was fulfilling a role that was the responsibility of the family head…to lead the family in prayer perhaps as giving thanks for the food they were about to eat, or as a way to represent the family undergoing hardship and asking God for direction.

A woman was at liberty to pray to God on her own behalf and for others, without a head covering, but if she was taking the place of her husband, she would cover her head. But why?

Paul answers……1 Cor 11:8-10….
”For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. 9 And what is more, man was not created for the sake of the woman, but woman for the sake of the man. 10 That is why the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.”

”For it seems to me that God has put us the apostles last on exhibition as men condemned to death, because we have become a theatrical spectacle to the world, and to angels and to men.
(1 Cor 4:9)

To man and also to the angels it is a sign of godly submission.

The length of a man’s hair was not to be same as a woman’s, just as a woman was not to wear the clothing of a man….this I believe was in connection with those who were wanting to participate in homosexual activity, by displaying to others their sexual identity. Remember that in Israel, homosexual practice merited the death penalty, as did other forms of sexual deviation. God’s standards have never changed….a family unit begins with the union of a husband and wife in scriptural marriage.

Only a male and female can produce children, which is after all, the noble purpose of sexual intercourse. Sexual activity for gay couples denies the real purpose of marriage and introduces a third party if these want to have children…..marriage cannot be a threesome. God’s standards are violated in many ways by those who want to bend his rules in order to indulge the flesh.
