Why hadn't the baptized believers in Samaria received the Holy Spirit?

I agree the one can not be a christian without the indwelling but the question is how doe the bible teach that get the indwelling for it is promised to all.

To me anyone who has a heart for God, and looks to the creator, will receive the holy spirit, even recieve the spirit of Christ without knowing the name Jesus, or that he was tje christ.

How is that possible? It comes from a humble heart of an individual who is seeking in faith fot God… on a personal and deep relationship level.

Now those who have the bible and are able to use it it is benefical to them as a reference, however its the same too for them, the look to Yahava or God in faith, and deligently seek him out they recieve the spirit of Christ snd the holy spirit with the. Because of Faith.

This is a subjective belief personally to me, and believe God looks on the inside of our heart.

Matthew I want you to think about this.

In Acts chapter two Peter speaking with authority by the spirit has said that to receive the indwelling spirit one has to be baptized in the name of Christ see Acts 2:38. That is the That is the gift of the holy ghost in that passage it is the indwelling spirit as promised to all that call on the name of the lord and Paul says that calling on the name of the Lord is through baptism in his name Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.'

Paul backs this up later in Acts 19:1-5
1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

See according to Paul in order to get the indwelling spirit one has to be baptized in the name of Christ Acts 2:38 now note that was to get the promised spirit but in order to give the Ephesians the power of confirming the word to grow the new church Paul just planted he had to lay hands on them Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

Now this was in to get the power of confirming the word as we seen in Mark 16;17-20
17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.]

Notice it clearly tells why this power of the spirit is given
"the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed."
This power is not freely given to all but first to the apostles then from there them laying hands on other but only them as recorded in the scriptures

See there is two functions of the spirit and we must not confuse the two

I saw this sign in front of an old Methodist country church out in the middle of nowhere.

Although most mainline denominations are pretty much unofficially cessationist, I sense a longing for tangible evidence of the Holy Spirit.

To me they are all dead and gone and the bride was taken; however today we still recieve the calling of the spirit and partake in being adopted as children, called to love and have faith. No need for signs and miracles. Just trust and faith with love, with hope of going away after this life and going on to the next realm to be with God.

Revelation 22:17
17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

Okay let me try this again Philip went and preached they believed his words and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. In accordance to Gods word when one believes repents and is baptized in the name of Christ one also receives the INDWELLING SPIRIT These people have done that and are now born again Christians.

Now Philip needs to go forth and build more churches as commission so he needs to impart the POWER GIFT of confirming the word to this new church he just established so they can carry out the work of growing this church so he can go forth. Philip even though he had hands laid on him to give his the gift is unable to do the same for this new church therefore he had to call on Peter to lay hands on them so as to give them this power need to confirm the word of God,

2 Things to note out of this passage. 1. the Spirit has two functions one is the indwelling the second is the power of confirming the word in other word the spirit with in and the spirit upon.
the second this to note that the laying on of hands was the only way to receive the power of confirming and not just any hands it had to be by an Apostle
Well as to point two- it would seem that then this confirming is now extinct if it had to be by an apostle.

1. Jesus commanded people to be baptized the name of the Trinity- Samaria had not been baptized thuus.

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

To say that people have to have two times of receiving the Spirit (one to be saved and one to be confirmed) is not biblical.

Without any other passages defining further what took place, we see that they had not yet received the Spirit until Peter came and opened the door4 to them.

What do you think Jesus meant when He gave Peter the keys to the kingdom.

I do not see in Scripture that the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit with Philip then received a second ministry of the spirit with Peter.

Once again we must remember that this was a historic time that will not be repeated. The church was being born, slowly but steadily.

Acts 19

King James Version

19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

These were Jews who believed jesus was Messiah but had not yet believed on the gospel. So Paul preached and they received all the spirit.

If laying of hands is still valid as you imply, then only elders get this confirming ministry for they are the only ones who have hands laid upon them. their is no instruction for laying on of hands to the normal believer.

I agree the one can not be a christian without the indwelling but the question is how doe the bible teach that get the indwelling for it is promised to all.
Very simple- believe on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus for their sin debt and then they receive all of the Holy spirit. Getting saved means belonging to God and as Paul wrote:

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

It happens the moment a person believes.

Lets try this again
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. Simon goes to Samaris and peaches the Gospel of Christ unto them,
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

He is administering the signs of confirming that his message is from God as Mark 16:17-20 has said would be done,

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

It is recorded that the Samaritans believed the gospel Philip preached and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ which gives the indwelling spirit (Acts 2:38) So if we believe that God meant it when he said if you are baptized in Christ name you will receive the indwelling spirit as he said through Peter in Acts 2 then we know that the Samaritans now have the indwelling spirit.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
Now we see that Simon also believed and was baptized in Christ name and followed Philip who is working signs of conformation and he is amazed at the power signs. At this time it is only Philip working in the power that was given him by the laying on of hands in Acts 36 go and read it.

See word got out to the Apostles that Philip had planted a church in Samaria so they knowing that Philip could not transfer the power went down and laid hands on them transferring the power of confirmation so as they could grow the church and Philip and the Apostles could go forth into all the world planting churches as they were commanded.

18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

See Simon see that the power was transferred by the laying on of hand and wanted to buy the power but was corrected of this wickedness.

You said to me " If laying of hands is still valid as you imply, then only elders get this confirming ministry for they are the only ones who have hands laid upon them. their is no instruction for laying on of hands to the normal believer."

I guess I am not making myself clear for I do not mean to imply that the laying on of hands is still in effect. I have being labouring to show that the laying on of hands to transfer the power of Mark 16:17-20 was for a porpuse spelled out in Mark 16 it was for confirming the word of God as it was being written. In the early church the new testament was not recorded it was being recorded with the signs to confirm it was of God.

Today it has been recorded and we have a copy of it we no longer need the signs to confirm it is from God we now have faith in the written word.

It is recorded that the Apostles is the only ones that could transfer the power those that got it from the laying on of the Apostles hand could not lay hands on anyone and transfer the power.

That's an interesting reading.
I have taken the baptism and the fire to be synonymous, but why not two things, as you read it. ???

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Do you have further indication that your reading is valid?

Mark 9:49 NIV
Everyone will be salted with fire.
Jesus’ Baptism is with:
the Holy Spirit AND Fire.

Matt 3:11-17
Luke 3:16

A mans WORK, is to BELIEVE in the Lord God.

A mans SERVICE, is to Freely, Willingly RECEIVE Christ the Lord’s Baptism OF the Holy Spirit and Fire.

Agree.
So how does this work from a practical standpoint?
Do you see the Baptism with the Holy Spirit a subsequent experience to water baptism?

IMO…Water Baptism IS: FOR other men to Witness A person Testifying (supposedly)…
* Heart-full Regret for having HAD not Believed.
* A “heartfelt” Belief “IN” the Lord God.
AND…
* Willingness “to heartfully” Give his bodily Life unto the Lord God ONCE and FOREVER.

It’s a “scheduled ceremony”.
It’s an “implied, supposed HEART-FULL Confession.”
It is also a means to “join” in membership a particular “Christian” Church.

No man truly KNOWS if another man is “making a True HEART-FUL” testimony and confession….but God Knows.

There ARE people WHO claim they …
“WERE”….Christians
“MADE”….the claims
“WERE”….(Water) Baptized
AND….ARE no longer Christians
AND….ARE no longer Believers

THEY ^^^ are an example of people who LIED to the Holy Spirit, by calling on Christ the Lord and giving a FALSE Testimony.
Christ…the Spirit and Power of God.

Many can believe, be wishy washy, unsure, Believe, Doubt, wonder, believe, ie Vacillate…
They can do that FOR YEARS.
They still have opportunity to Be SAVED….
IF they confess their Heartful Belief BEFORE their bodily death.

It’s the people WHO TESTIFY of their (supposed heartfull belief….before witnesses, such as a Water Baptism….and then Reject God.) WHO have forfeited…LOST their Salvation, DIDN”T TAKE their Salvation God Paid For and Offered to them.

Once a person Has Testified (wherever he is) of his regret, his Heartful believe, his willingness to receive Gods Gift of His Baptism with the Holy Spirit and Fire….That person IS FOREVER KEPT IN BELIEF, by, through, of the POWER (Spirit of God) Dwelling “IN” that person)…
NO WAY can that person EVER AGAIN REJECT the Lord God….nor can the Lord God ever reject that person.

That is false.

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder.
Getting saved is trusting (belieiving) in the death, resurrection of Jesus for your sins. Nothing else. Everything else in the Christian life comes from that.

So first century Christians could handle snakes and drink poison without harm and healing the sick but the other 20 centuries of Christian can't? Interesting.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

I do not see a time limit in this verse, do you?????

The only place I read of someone dealing with a snake was Paul when preaching got bite but was not harmed do you have other examples from the word of God and where do you see scripture that says anyone drank poison I don recall where it is recorded that it happened.
Now if you want to be true to the word look at verse 20 you posted and tell me what the signs were for? What did God say he was using these sign to do?
Is he really having to confirm his word or did he already confirm it and had it recorded so we can believe

Getting saved is trusting (belieiving) in the death, resurrection of Jesus for your sins. Nothing else. Everything else in the Christian life comes from that.
That has some truth but also deluded with falsehood. Yes we must believe the gospel message which is the death burial and resurrection of Christ but it also has things to be obeyed

Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Romans 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been

2 Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

The only place I read of someone dealing with a snake was Paul when preaching got bite but was not harmed do you have other examples from the word of God and where do you see scripture that says anyone drank poison I don recall where it is recorded that it happened.
Now if you want to be true to the word look at verse 20 you posted and tell me what the signs were for? What did God say he was using these sign to do?
Is he really having to confirm his word or did he already confirm it and had it recorded so we can believe
It doesn't say the signs ended or not. If you are going to use this passage, you should stay consistent. It is all one context. YTou need to show where these signs are recorded as ended.

Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
So do you believe in a faith plus something else salvation then?
