holiness is being set apart from the world.
That is the definition. Being set apart, God is holy he is set apart from the world.
Only Christ within a person set them apart from the world though they have to live and function in the world; and go through emotions, and live in a fleshly body that only knows fleshly pleasure.
Those who follow after Christ set themselves apart from the world though they actively have to be in it. Otherwise they would have to kill themselves to escape this flesh. God so loved the world he sent his son to save it.
People can be rich, poor, have jobs, enjoy entertainment, whatever. However to be set apart in having idenity in Christ is to believe, follow and abide in Him; apart from him they cant do anything (that is good by the heavenly standards.) Anything that is right or just to do that comes through this, is the righteousness of Christ and its part of the response of the one who chooses to do the will of God rather than their own will.
Holiness is similar to godliness - its being set apart for the purposes of God while living a life devoted to God in understanding while they once lived a life full of sinful indilgences (that is murderous thoughts, envy, hatred, etc.) those things are died to by going to the cross, buried with Christ, and newness of life by the spirit raising to newness of life in Christ.
And that is a relationship that has to be self maintained every single day of life until one dies.

“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.”

“And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.””

“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”
