But here’s the thing: when I open a thread to unpack a specific issue, like navigating the intellectual attacks on Christianity we’ve been discussing, and get only Bible quotes, it feels like a platitude. Not that the Scriptures themselves are trivial—far from it—but using them as a catch-all answer can come across as dismissive of the practical problem.
It’s like someone asking, “How do I learn a foreign language?” and being told, “With God’s help!” Theologically correct, sure, but practically, it’s unhelpful without a system—study schedules, techniques, or methods.
It’s hard to dispute that every denomination, including Orthodoxy, has wolves in sheep’s clothingl. But throwing out serious accusations like Orthodoxy twisting the Truth requires evidence. Can you provide specific examples of where the Orthodox Church distorts Scripture or Christ’s teachings? Without that, it’s just a blanket claim that doesn’t hold up.
As for “studying the Bible for yourself,” what does that really mean? If you’re reading it in English, "Most Likely, You’ve Never Read the True Bible in English".
Even a tiny Greek particle, if mistranslated, can skew the meaning of Gospel events—take the discussion in the thread *What Role Did Pilate’s Wife Play in the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ?* for example.
Or consider cultural context: misunderstanding the cultural context of Jesus’ time can lead to completely misinterpreting His words, as explored in Do Not Murder vs. You Must Kill: Understanding 'Kill' and 'Murder' in Biblical Commands.
Many readers, left to their own devices, conclude Jesus taught to “do good to murderers or military enemies and love Satan and his followers”.

i could have quoated the gospel to you even back then . But i darn sure didnt know Christ .
just cause one can lip athems and quoate the gospel , darn sure dont mean they follow and behave and walk as DID JESUS CHRIST .
Just a real friendly reminder for us all to take hold upon and to realize before its forever too late .
In short, even in theoretical Christianity within academic knowledge, there’s no clear and precise understanding of the Bible. As for practical spiritual disciplines, there’s even less to say.

we can even read it together over the phone . You would be shocked at what can come of that .

You keep saying, “Just read the Bible,” as if that alone unlocks all truth. But it’s not that simple. Satan knows Scripture by heart.
The scribes, Pharisees, and high priests knew the Torah inside out, yet they crucified the Messiah it pointed to.
I’ve met people who can quote entire chapters of the Bible verbatim, yet they’re Christian Zionists.
Others know not just the Bible but every patristic commentary from John Chrysostom to Lopukhin’s Explanatory Bible. Yet, they have zero original thought—just robotic regurgitation of textbook answers. Ask them a real-life question, and you get a flood of quotes and patristic interpretations, all by the book, no deviation. Theologically perfect, maybe, but useless for grasping the deeper meaning or practical application.

God is real and Christianity needs to deal with the real. The old timers can juggle saying science does not know anything. They can go to church in their Ford pickup that has 32 computers and when they have a heart attack use the little witchy device to call the science mobile to go to a building of science to be treated and they know that if the doctor pulls out a Bible instead of treating them they are going to die.
Younger people are not as forgiving and a lot of times Christianity is preached as hocus pocus. The world is billions of years old. Started out as a rock and over billions of years all that lived and died turned into what we call our front yard….dirt. Enough living and dying to cover the planet. Christianity is not a fairy tail, the world is not flat with corners and young people know that. Evolution was God driven but evolution did occur. The model.... the atom…the solar system looks like an atom….that galaxies look like an atom….and the universe looks like an atom. And they have discovered intelligent subatomic particles ….God’s awareness is everywhere.
I am a educated Theologian educated in 5 countries, been at it most of my life I am also a person of science Quantum Mechanics and Astrophysics, nuclear weapons and submarines. But it does not take all that to be saved. 1st century Christians heard and believed, no Bibles at that time…..and they were saved.
As a whole Christians did not have Bibles in their hands until after the Gutenberg press was invented and the Protestant reform of the 16th century. We know a lot more than what they did in the 1st century but they were just as saved. Then again Christians should have a thirst for knowledge and preach reality to the young because they are the future of Christianity.

After the collapse of the USSR, many scientists and highly qualified specialists became unneeded. Thousands, if not tens of thousands, ended up on the streets. Some started selling Turkish or Chinese junk at makeshift markets. Some turned to alcoholism or died from drug overdoses; others took their own lives. But some pulled through, and a few even became Orthodox priests. One such priest I know was a scientist. I once asked him, “Why don’t you ever talk about evolution? You’re an expert in that field.” He graduated from Moscow State University, where he took a course in the history and theory of scientific atheism in his third year. His response was: “It’s dull, boring, and uninteresting. Back in university, that nonsense was tedious to study. I only chose it because it was fashionable in the USSR and could boost a career. Now, would I voluntarily talk about it? Never in my life.
Here’s the point: it’s all just theories. Atheists don’t even hide that evolution or the multiverse are merely theories, not proven facts. They toss these ideas into the public sphere, and we, believers, are expected to debate this nonsense like fools. Atheists themselves know it’s nonsense. Even professors of “scientific atheism” didn’t believe in evolution and laughed at it. They laugh at us when Christians start arguing among ourselves, splitting into evolutionist and creationist camps. Now they’ve come up with the “multiverse” theory. If a scientist dares mention the possibility of God, they’re branded a “retrograde.” But if they support the multiverse theory, they’re called a “progressive” scientist. Obvious double standards.
Science should be divided into practical and theoretical. Practical scientists focus on their applied work and don’t meddle in religion. Theoretical science, though, is like politics—full of lies, speculation, and intrigue. Theorists invent ideas, and then Christians debate them, argue, and divide into camps. These theories constantly change and get revised, yet Christians keep discussing what atheist scientists have cooked up next. Those theorists openly admit these are just theories, not facts. So why bother debating them among ourselves?

It seems like you’re a bit of a one-trick pony—whatever I write, your answer is always “read the Bible yourself.” Fair enough, but here’s a question: what do you do when you’re not reading the Bible? You can’t be reading it 24/7, right? Practical Christianity can’t just boil down to reading Scripture alone, can it? So, how do you live out your faith in the real world without falling back on “just read the Bible”?

And of course we can and SHOULD edify , exhort , yes even CORRECT one another .
Be hearers and doers . But be IN that BIBLE to learn for ourselves .

Honestly, I’ve been asked far stranger questions than whether I think the world is flat.
After Yuri Gagarin’s flight on April 12, 1961—the first human in space—Soviet propaganda used him to “disprove” God’s existence. They attributed a famous quote to him: “I was in space and didn’t see God” (or variations like “I looked and looked, but no God”). It was meant to prove God was a myth, with space being empty of anything divine.
In reality, Gagarin never said this. Historians, like Anton Pervushin in *180 Minutes That Changed the World*, and his friends, like cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, say the quote came from Nikita Khrushchev. At a 1961 CPSU Central Committee Plenum, Khrushchev used Gagarin as a prop for his anti-religious campaign: “Gagarin flew through space and saw no God!” This was part of his push to close churches and promote atheism.
Gagarin himself was a believer, secretly baptized according to friends’ accounts, but couldn’t speak openly in the atheist USSR. After his death in 1968, his widow and friends confirmed the quote was propaganda fiction.
Yet, in the USSR and even long after its collapse, people kept asking: “Gagarin was in space and didn’t see God—how do you explain that?”
So, go ahead and try answering that one. See the issue?
