I find that I am to distracted by music with lyrics for it to be mentally simulating.

I agree. Strangely enough, I even favor singing worship music in foreign languages sometimes, like in Spanish. I know my God is being worshipped because His Presence is there. But without cognitively understanding every word (I do know some Spanish), my mind is freed from concentrating on every word to focus on Him exclusively.

It's like praying in tongues. Your mind is free to pray purely unto God, without the mind slowing you down any.

I believe in the studies that have been done that more complex music stimulates brain activity, and it is certainly something the body of Christ like all people would benefit from

I don't believe that music of the faith is a mental process, but that music is stored somewhere else within our being, in our soul?? I first clued into this when an old couple, reaching about 90, sat near us in church. This woman used to bring her husband along because she couldn't leave him on his own at home because of his advanced dementia. As I watched him singing some of the old familiar hymns. He didn't need a hymnbook I watched in amazement, as he sang all five verses from memory. Wherever he was retrieving it from, it wasn't his mental processes!! Since then, I have witnessed a number of similar incidents online.

It's a curious question, Stan. It is well known that words put to music can serve as a memory devise. Simply put, if you put something to song, you will remember it better. Another thing likely at play is that the Spirit of God inhabits the praises of His people, so you likely also have the Lord Himself entering in to use an older believer as a vessel to sing praises unto Himself, and where the Spirit is, youth is renewed like the eagle.

I have also always believed (though I would need to see documentation on it) that the brain is a muscle, and like any muscle stays strong through continued use. Thus, the more we stay mentally active into our older years the more we ward off the potential onset of things like Alzheimer's, Dementia and memory loss to begin with.

I also believe that mental activities in our latter years serve to delay onset dementia for those who are susceptible.

With that in mind, I hereby invite members who have classical, jazz or progressive interests to post on this thread if they would like to.
Waaay back 60 years ago, I heard a recording of J. Robert Elmore playing Bach on the Biggest [organ]. That shaped my musical life, not only studying classical organ, but my favourite composer was Bach. I particuarly loved his chorale preludes, one for each Sunday of the year. Bach was first and foremost a church organist and composer.

As I played Bach's chorales and preludes, I was listening to his spirit. Somehow, it felt as if our two spirits were merged together as I played his music. I have never experienced anything like that with any other composer.

15 years ago, our church tossed their organ in the garbage, and replaced it with guitars and drums. I wanted to leave the church, but my wife wanted to stay. She bribed me with an offer I could not refuse. She said, "Why don't you get a new organ, so you can play the hymns all you want at home." So . . . I pick the world's best organ builder, who just happened to have a manufacturing facility only a hundred km away. So I had a custom-designed organ built for my home. A six-month project where we were in touch on a weekly basis. The final product shown below.

Less than a year later, after being exposed to the din of geetars and drums she also wanted to leave, and attend a church where they still played hymns and actual music.

PS. I once had a guitar. My wife enjoyed it so much that she gave it to our next-door neighbour to sell when they had a garage sale. :)

Wonderful. And now that you mention it, while I only listened to a certain amount of classical, I always sort of felt that way listening to Bach myself. It always seemed to have this natural flow to it, like you could relate to it easily.

Went searching and found this. Didn't know there was such a thing as a concerto for four pianos, but apparently he wrote one (i.e. at least one). 7:08+ has the kind of power and dynamics I like in Classical.
