Genesis 1:14-18 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: He made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Although this thread is about "signs" it's necessary to consider the spiritual teaching in the above passage. Look past the sun, moon and stars as we see them with our physical eyes to what they represent. Day/Light and Night/Darkness.....Christ and Satan...the "two great lights." God also "made the stars." Who are they?

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

1 Corinthians 15:41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

Jude 1:13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Spiritual stars are followers of either the Light or the darkness. For, "one star differeth from another." Some are the sons of God while others are of Satan...wandering stars, fallen angels. Followers of Christ shine His "light upon the earth." In doing so we "divide the Light from darkness." As an aside...all prophecy given about Satan is in months, lunar...of the night/darkness.

In seeing the beginning passage in a spiritual light I had difficulty with the word made in "God made two great lights." If the "greater light to rule the day" is the Sun...Christ, then saying He was "made" doesn't sound correct for He is God. God isn't "made." However I found it means He was "made flesh."

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

The Sun is Christ, the moon is Satan...the two great lights God made for this spiritual battle for souls. The moon, although named the lesser of the great lights, is as Satan for as Satan is devoid of all light, the moon has no light of it's own. Rather it reflects the light of the sun...as Satan, who pretends to be as Christ, is a pale imitation of His glory.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The stars are followers of the Sun and the moon. As Satan pretends to be an angel of light...his ministers pretend to be stars of Christ. God said, "Let them be for signs." That leads us into the following....

Signs #4591 Greek...semaino ~ from sema (a mark; of uncert. der.); to indicate: - signify #4592 of a presumed der. of the base of 4591; an indication, espec. cerem. or supernatural: - miracle, sign, token wonderful

Signs
#226 Hebrew...owth, ~ from 225 (in the sense of appearing); a signal (lit. or fig.) as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc. - mark, miracle, (en-) sign, token. #225 to come, i.e. (impl.) to assent) - consent (note...in Daniel 4:2-3 only it means "portent." corresponding to #226 )

King Nebuchadnezzar wrote....

Daniel 4:2-3 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me. How great are His signs! and how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.

His kingdom IS His signs and wonders. They ARE His signs and the inhabitants of His kingdom.

Hebrews 2:3-5 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will? For unto the angels hath He not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

The signs bear witness as led by the Holy Spirit. The signs hear His Word, witness His Word and it confirms His truth to those that hear. Isaiah wrote....

Isaiah 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

The children ARE for signs. We are children of the Light but there are also children of darkness.

2 Thessalonians 2:8-10 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Matthew 24:23-25 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.

The great signs are the false prophets that deceive! They are Satan's "lying wonders." So waiting for literal stars to explode or fall to earth will mislead you. Satan's great signs are all around us...teaching, preaching, educating - DECEIVING.

Luke 21:8 And He said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

We are His signs and wonders...made to give His light on the earth and to separate light from darkness...so know who you are and let your light shine. :D

1 Thessalonians 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Just an interesting side note, whirlwind, the moon does not create it’s own light but reflects the light from the sun. The stars though, do create light.

All this is very, very gnostic type / dualist interpretation. This gives validity to sun worship which all pagans do. THe sun and moon as signs are just that...... SIGNS! (Calendars, dates, events, etc)

The apostles asked Jesus when HIs second coming would take place. He told them about looking at the signs. Moon turning red, sun turning black, stars falling out, etc. In other words, He's talking about a series of eclipses and other celestial SIGNS that will anounce the things to come.
