The bible is full of words, phrases and topics that must be studied in order to get a full understanding of their meaning. Without further investigation, some of these meanings could be misinterpreted. The sentence , “The Lords Day”, is such a phrase.

When people go to the book of Revelation and read the following scripture,

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Rev. 1:10

they immediately say, “You see, John was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day.”. Now for some reason they think the phrase, “the Lord’s day”, is referring to the first day of the week; Sunday, but NOWHERE does it speak of any day of the week. What most do not understand is that the phrase, “The Lords Day” is not referring to a specific day, as in a Sunday or a Saturday, but instead, is speaking of a time when God will deliver His wrath upon this earth. As you will clearly read in the scriptures provided in this lesson, the phrase “The Lords Day” is not talking about ANY day of the week. And if it were, how is it determined from (1) scripture it is talking about the 1[sup]st[/sup] day of the week? Again, the bible mentions no day of the week whatsoever!

The purpose of this lesson is to (1), learn what period of time is really being spoken of when referring to, “The Lords Day”, and (2), understand that the phrases, “The Lords Day”, “The Day of the Lord” and “In that Day“, are in fact, referring to the same future event; the second coming of Jesus Christ!

Before we get started, go and get your Bible, DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR ANYTHING!!!!. Take your time, study and read this lesson for yourself and do as Paul says, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”, I Thess 5:21. So let’s get started…………

The Day of the Lord
Most who read the bible have never paid attention to the connection between the (2) phrases, “The Day of the Lord” and, “The Lords Day.” But the fact of the matter is that the two phrases are speaking about the same event. Yes….an EVENT! A period in time! Not a DAY of the week!!!

I’m going to include almost every scripture in the bible on this subject so you will know for a fact the phrase is not speaking about the 1st day, or any day of the week for that matter. After reading the following verses you will also know when you are approached by someone trying to tell you that the phrase IS talking about the first day of the week, you will know they have no knowledge and have been ill informed of what the Lords day is actually referring to.

By the time you get to the statement made by John in Revelation you should fully understand the vision, (spirit), he is seeing and what event is taking place. Please read each verse below carefully so you can see they ALL speak of the same future event.

So let’s read and fully understand exactly what the “Day of the Lord” is really all about.

Isa.2
[12] For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

Isa.13
[6] Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
[9] Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

The prophet also said that God almighty will come as a destruction to destroy the sinners.

Jer.46
[10] For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood:

A day of vengeance and his sword will be made drunk with his adversaries’ blood. Jer. 46:10

Lam.2
[22] Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD's anger none escaped nor remained

Ezek.13:
[5] Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD.

Ezek.30
[3] For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.

It will be a day when the Lord’s anger will be escaped by none. Lam.2:22.

It shall be a cloudy day. Ezek.30:3

Joel.1
[15] Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

Joel.2
[1] Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

Trumpets will sound and the people will tremble.

Joel. 2:1
[11] And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

Amos.5
[18] Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
[20] Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

It shall be a day of darkness, even very dark and no light. Amos. 5:20

Obad.1
[15] For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

Zeph.1
[7] Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.
[8] And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD's sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.
[14] The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

Zeph.2
[2] Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD's anger come upon you.
[3] Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD's anger.

Acts 2
[20] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come.

1Thes.5
[2] For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood… Acts 2:20

The day will come as a thief in the night. 1 Thes. 5:2

2Pet.3
[10] But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

And again the day will come as a thief comes in the night, and the heavens shall pass away. Let’s look at one more phrase and let the scriptures tell us what period of time it speaks of.

In That Day
As we just read above, “The day of the Lord” does not refer to a day of the week, but instead a period of time. And that time is the second coming of the Lord. Let’s read just a few more scriptures speaking of the exact same period of time; the second coming of the Lord. But this time the phrase used is, “…in that day…”.

Isa.2
[11] The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
[17] And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
[20] In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

Again we find a period of time when man shall be made humble, the lofty minded brought down and men will cast away their idols of silver and gold

Isa.11
[10] And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
[11] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

And who is the root of Jesse that will stand for the people in “THAT DAY”? Jesus!!!

It will also be at that time when the TRUE nation of Israel will be gathered.

Isa.24
[21] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

In this day the kings of the earth will be punished. Sounds familiar?

Isa.27
[13] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

Again we have a great trumpet being sounded and the Lord being worshiped in Jerusalem all being done in ‘that day’!

Jer.30
[8] For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:

Finally, the TRUE nation of Israel will be freed from the yoke of their oppressors.

Zeph.3
[11] In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

For those that believe God’s laws no longer must be observed please take note of the above verse. For in THAT DAY those that have transgressed (broken, did not keep, disobeyed, ignored) God’s laws will be ashamed for ALL of your doings.

Zech.12
[9] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
[11] In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

Notice ALL nations will be destroyed that came against Jerusalem

Zech.14
[4] And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
[9] And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

And finally we have in THAT DAY, the Lord returning to the earth at the mount

of Olives as king over ALL the earth.

We just read scriptures, in both the OT and NT, all of them talking about the same period of time, and yet not one reference to a particular day of the week. But the scriptures did have this to say:

  • “God almighty will come as a destruction to destroy the sinners.” Isa. 13:6&9
  • “A day of vengeance and his sword will be made drunk with his adversaries’ blood.” Jer. 46:10
  • “It shall be a cloudy day.” Ezek. 30:3
  • “Trumpets will sound and the people will tremble.” Joel. 2:1
  • “It shall be a day of darkness, even very dark and no light.” Amos. 5:20
  • The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood… Acts 2:20
  • “The day will come as a thief in the night”. 1 Thes. 5:2
  • “The elements shall melt with fervent heat.” 2 Peter. 3
  • “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown.” Isa.27:13
  • “The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.” Isa.2:11
  • “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.” Zech.12:9
  • “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof.” Zech.14:4
  • And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” Zech.14:9
By now there should be no doubt as to what event is being spoken of. It is a time when the vengeance of the Lord will be upon the earth. And it is the same period of time John speaks of in his vision in the book of Revelation. What John was seeing was a vision of that great and dreadful day of the Lord, coming as a thief in the night with the sounds of trumpets. When John wrote about this event, instead of calling it, “The Day of the Lord”, he called it, “.the Lord’s day.” And that day truly will be, ‘The Lord’s day. As we have just read, it is not talking about the 1[sup]st[/sup], 7[sup]th[/sup] or any day of the week. Let’s read again, the vision John was given in Rev. But this time, let’s read it with the understanding of what the day is really all about:

Rev. 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

This event will happen only once, it will not be a secret… everyone on earth will know… “For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” Matt 24:27.

It will truly be just as John said… “The Lord’s Day”!!!

Hi Eccl,

I have to disagree with you here, While I agree that the day of the Lord is a period in the future. I don't believe that what John wrote is speaking of the that time. Consider John's words, 'on the Lord's day'. None of the passages that you posted other than Rev 1:10 use the phrase the Lord's day, they say the day of the Lord or in that day. It might seem insignifican but it isn't. The Greek words translated "Lord's" is an adjective not a noun. Therefore it is descriptive of day. The Greek word is "κυριακη", it appears only twice in the Bible, here and 1 Corinthinas 11:20.

1 Corinthians 11:20 ( KJV )
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.

This same word is used by Ignatius, and what is significant is that Ignatius was a disciple of the apostle John so he would be familliar with John's usage of the term. Not only does Ignatius use the term but he also defines it.

The Early Church Fathers: Ante-Nicene Fathers Volume 1
Ignatius to the Magneisans Chapter 9

And after the observance of the Sabbath, let every friend of Christ keep the Lord’s Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days [of the week].

It also appears in the Didache.

The Early Church Fathers: Ante-Nicene Fathers Volume 7

Chap. XIV Christian Assembly on the Lord’s Day. 1But every Lord’s day do ye gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.

Here is the note for the Greek "κυριακὴν"

Comp. Rev. i. 10. Here the full form is κατὰ κυριακὴν δὲ Κυρίον. If the early date is allowed, this verse confirms the view that from the first the Lord’s Day was observed, and that, too, by a eucharistic celebration.

It is the chief or superior day of the week. His reference to the resurrection day tells us that he has Sunday in mind.

There are many more references to the first day of the week as "The Lord's day" in the writings of the early Christians.

I think that when reading the book of Revelation it becomes evident that what is really important about this vision of John isn't the content at all, but what day he had this vision. This isn't the kind of question you're going to find playing Trivial Pursuits; bible edition. The day John had his vision is the topic of numerous treatises from noted theologians from well over the last two centuries. When questions of end times prophecies come up, inevitably the first question is almost always, "But what we really need to know is what day of the week did John have this vision?" We all know that John had been exiled to the isle of Patmos, and that this isolated rock in the middle of nowhere was not the kind of place where John would likely forget what day it was, nor the importance of the day he had this vision. The future will take care of itself, what's really important is what day of the week John had his vision.
