You're missing the context of the passage. It is speaking of the last days that had begun already back then and would lead up to the future day of the Lord that will come as a thief in the night bringing "sudden destruction" by fire upon those in spiritual darkness from which "they shall not escape" (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3, 2 Peter 3:10-12). You're conflating the last days with the day of the Lord, in other words. Read 2 Peter 3:3-13 where Peter says that there would be scoffers in the last days scoffing at the promise of the day of the Lord's coming as a thief in the night. That day has not come yet, but will come unexpectedly as a thief in the night in the future at the end of the last days.I agree, and so does Peter as he uses Joel's prophesy as proof the day of the LORD the Old Covenant prophets foretell came at Pentecost with evidence of the Holy Spirit being poured out just as the prophet foretells He would be.
Acts 2:14-21 (KJV) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
I really don't understand how people can read these words and continue to argue that we are still waiting for the day of the LORD the prophets of Old foretell would come. We aren't looking and waiting for the Lord to come, since the advent of the cross, resurrection, and ascension we are looking and waiting for the last day of the Lord that shall come when Christ comes again.
Notice towards the end of the Acts 2 passage that it says "And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come". Compare that to this...
Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His [a]elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Peter was talking about things that were starting to happen at that time on the day of Pentecost that would happen throughout the last days, such as the pouring out of the Holy Spirit and people calling on the name of the Lord to be saved, but he also pointed to something that would happen in the future just before the day of the Lord's return, such as the sun being darkened and moon turning red (which it does when not giving light). You're missing that Peter was talking about things that would occur "BEFORE that great and notable day of the Lord" during the last days. The last days lead up to the future day of the Lord that will come unexpectedly as a thief in the night. How does the day of the Lord come unexpectedly as a thief in the night in your view?
