"Hell" is an English word that translates the Greek word "Hades." The Greek word "Hades" translates the Hebrew word "Sheol." The definition of Sheol was simply the grave of mankind. It's where both righteous and unrighteous went to when they died but must be understood to be symbolic since man doesn't have a Soul that separates from the body and literally goes to a literal place called Sheol, or Hades or Hell. The scriptures say man is a Soul not that he has a Soul. At John 5:28,29 Jesus Christ says that the righteous and unrighteous will be resurrected from the memorial tomb. This term(memorial tomb) renders the Greek word mne•mei'-on, which comes from the verb "to remind," suggesting that the person who has died is remembered. So when Jesus was speaking of the resurrection of the dead, he's speaking of those who have died and are in God's memory. These are the ones who will be resurrected, those that I'm God's memory whether they are righteous or unrighteous. It's those that God doesn't remember who are eternally lost forever in non-existence.

Luke 23:39-40 . . One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at
him: Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us! But the other criminal
rebuked him. Don't you fear God, he said, since you are under the same
    sentence?

There's a humorous incident depicted in Dante's Inferno where these two
guys are quarrelling over which deserves to be in Hell more than the other.
But when both are in Hell, it matters little who deserves to be there more.
Having a holier-than-thou-attitude in Hell is pretty much going to get you
    nowhere.

There's a variety of negative opinions about God all across the internet.
Some say He's cruel, sadistic, heartless, unjust, unfair, unkind, a despotic
bully, a monster, sexist, and just a general all around jerk.

Well, it matters little whether He's all that, and more. It's futile to criticize
God and rake Him across the coals because God can't be stopped no matter
    what His faults.

There's little to be gained by a man on the gallows with a noose already
around his neck turning to the executioner and saying: Your breath stinks.
Well; maybe it really does stink but the condemned man is still going to get
his neck stretched regardless. He will have the satisfaction of getting in a
parting shot but pointing out the executioner's faults won't stop him from
    doing his job.

"Who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to him
who formed it: Why did you make me like this? (Rom 9:20)

Their not going to heaven in no way implies that they are not saved however. Let us not forget that there are two phases of the kingdom, the earthly phase and the heavenly phase. The whole purpose of the heavenly phase being the blessing of the earthly phase.

Yes its true that the majority do not go to heaven, this despite the babblings of the blind guides who assure all that a mere profession of faith in the Lord insures ones heavenly inheritance. The Scriptures to the contrary informs us that not only are not all being called at this time, but that of the many who are, not all of these will be chosen, i.e. proven faithful until death, having made their calling and election sure.

The Lord is not attempting to convert the world at this time, that is the work of the millennial age more specifically the Medeatorial phase when the Great Mediator, the Church is complete and glorified.

The kind that reads the bible.

If it were true as some purpose that God was attempting to convert the world at this time the evidence from the past 2000 years would confirm it to have been a total failure. No the Lord is not attempting to convert the world at this time he is presently only calling out a people for his name, a body of faithful believers fully consecrated to him and of whom he will use as the instruments of the blessing and conversion of the world in the next age.

That's because I am not a member of any denomination so I have no denomination to claim. I am merely a Bible Student consecrated to the Lord. At present I consider myself a perspective member of the true Church, which is the body of Christ and as such recognize none of the various denominations, institutions, and sects of men (orthodoxy as it is referred).

The reason I say I am only a "perspective" or "probationary" member of the Church of the First Born is because until we make our calling and election sure, until we have been proven faithful even unto death that is all we are.

As it is written, many are called, few are chosen, and fewer still will be proven faithful unto death.

I am sorry it was never my intention to be deceptive about my faith, I was under the impression that by now considering the number of times I have been asked this question that it was already widely known.

    Good answer.
I don't take upon me any labels of denominations either.

God is not in any 'box', and neither am I.
God IS God, and I am His child... period.

...and agree , our walk and faithfulness here, determines where in His kingdom we will be placed.

    .
FAQ: If it's true that people in Hell are destined to be stuck there forever,
then wouldn't it be accurate to say they have eternal life seeing as how they
    will never cease to exist?

A: Eternal life has practically nothing at all to do with longevity.

Eternal life has to do with God's basic nature, i.e. the very core of His divine
being; whereas human life has to do with a human's basic nature, i.e. the
very core of a created being.

    People in Hell live and move and have their being with human nature;
whereas people in Heaven live and move and have their being with divine
    nature. (2Pet 1:3-4)

If people in heaven really and truly do have divine nature rather than human
nature, then just imagine how easy it is for them to please God not just
some of the time, nor even most of the time; but all of the time.

The tree of life in the garden of Eden would've extended longevity
indefinitely for as long as the people kept nourishing themselves with its fruit
and using its leaves for remedies (Gen 3:22, Rev 22:2). So that goes to
show that it isn't necessary for humans to have eternal life in order for them
to exist a long, long time. There are other ways to keep human life going. I
suspect that God has quite a few tricks up His sleeve about which we are
    thus far unaware.

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature.

Funny, when I read 2 Peter 1:4, I don't see anyone living with "human nature". And all those people who have been "Beyond And Back"*, haven't described such a lifestyle.

In fact, the lifestyle THEY describe is: after being "physically" violated, torn at, and abused by other tortured souls; they end up alone, in a dark and empty space with no sense of time or purpose; with only their thoughts to ponder for what could be seconds, hours, or eternity ...

    Hey there Colin :)

I am probably the odd man out here. lol ( but I am used to that)

I do not believe in the eternity forever thing re hell.

Yes, I do agree with you that 'hell' is a nothingness of darkness. ( outer darkness)
But not forever. Even with our natural minds , how foolish the teaching that at the end all all things ... The Victorious Glorious Lord...actually loses ,most of mankind to hell and and Devil and enjoys Eternity with a few faithful soul.

Yay, what a victory!!! I think not.

It amazes me the amount of people who object and even get hostile to "GOD WINS" ....and , I will never understand what part of The Love Of God they choose have a problem with!

I would rather believe in annihilation first, which is a little more merciful than the hell that the majority teach.

Micah 7.18 ..(and this said before the cross...) "He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in mercy."

The casual way that the majority of christians believe and flippantly accept that most of creation end up in 'hell' , totally amazes me.

There may be a comparison which applies: In an "isolation"/"sensory deprivation" tank all sense of space/time/world is lost. Have I been floating for 10 minutes or an hour? Have I been floating for an hour or a day? Have I been floating for a day or has the world perished and left me here.

Here on earth we are buffered by time in both directions, -- the past and the future. But in eternity, time is something that can be traversed both backward and forward, and stood still.

It's just how it is, regardless of our sentiments from this perspective,

It is rather unfortunate that the King James translators did not simply transliterate the words Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, and Tartarus.

Hades is NOT Hell (the Lake of Fire), neither is Sheol the grave. Sheol is the Hebrew name for Hades, so Sheol/Hades is the abode of the departed souls and spirits. The grave is simply the grave, where a corpse is placed and turns to dust. But the soul and spirit do not turn to dust. Those who are in Christ go to be with Christ in Heaven, and those who are not in Christ go to Hades to await their final judgment.

Christians believe what the Bible has to say about eternal Hell (the Lake of Fire). If we are prepared to believe what the Bible says about Heaven, then we must be prepared to also believe what the Bible says about Hell.

The reason for the propagation of the Gospel is so that no one should go to Hell. "But they have not all obeyed the Gospel" (Rom 10:16).
