Read Genesis 2:7...
"then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature." (ESV)

When God started the man breathing, he did not give the man a soul, but he "became" a soul. (or "living creature") You see there that the Hebrew word for soul ("nep̄eš") is translated "living creature" because that is what the "soul" is in the Bible. Nowhere is a soul described as a disembodied spirit. So the physical body of man became a "soul" when he started breathing. Animals too are called "souls' in the Bible because they breathe like we do, and they die the same way we do....we all stop breathing. (Ecclesiastes 3:19-20)

So the breath of life is the 'spirit' in man and animals. We all have the same "spirit" (breath) and when our physical body dies, the soul dies too. (Ezekiel 18:4) We do not have an immortal soul that departs from the body at death....no scripture says this. It say that there is no consciousness or activity in death. (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10)

So the Bible does not stress our uniqueness over the animals, but rather Solomon lamented about our similarity in death.

What was it that made us different?....the Bible's promise was "resurrection"...which was a return to life, not a continuation of it.
Animals were not promised this.
What have you been taught about the resurrection? Or do you know about it?
Jesus taught us about it in connection with his friend Lazarus. (John 11:11-14)
Lazarus' sister spoke of the hope of the resurrection.....

"So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live". (ESV)

What do you think Martha meant when she spoke about "the resurrection on the last day"?
And we're off and running...

I am a new Christian and I am in the process of studying the Bible. I'm trying to be a perfect Christian, that's why I came to the forum. I hope you won't feel I'm angry with my answer.
Jennifer,

You hang in there. This is a rough place. If you say anything beyond "Jesus loves me; This I know," you are going to have arrows flying at you from every direction. I just read a post by member @Hidden In Him that sums things up pretty nicely:

Time spent alone with the Lord is usually the only place where I learn anything regarding truth from scripture, although I will occasionally pick up something in the midst of researching an issue I'm discussing. What you actually learn on the forums is how to debate what you have learned, and defend it.

And yes, there are some bad spirits behind a lot of what goes on on the forums. I sometimes readily admit I have given myself to one. That's all part of spiritual growth. Trust me, the Christian forums these days are not for the faint of heart. They take a certain metal, and a determination to keep getting up. It can bear good fruit over time, but it's a bit like subjecting yourself to torture in order to become accustomed to what of necessary you will have to endure.

And may I extend a hearty welcome to you, as well.

(And don't mind Aunty. She's a precious and good soul, but she will not hesitate to sharpen your sword with her own. :D)

:)

If you continue to deny that God is Father, person, Son, person, Holy Spirit person. In One. You will die in your sins.
Your oneness god is as fictitious as Aunty Jane's god.
persons in God, hmm
There is only One Immortal, Who dwells alone in unapproachable light, the One Whom no mortal eye has ever seen or ever can see
persons are mortals, right? So i mean i dunno, but i would lose this Catholic, misguided idea of "persons in God" asap

Faith comes by hearing the what?
Romans 10:16-17
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord who has believed our report?
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The scriptures teach we only come to know the truth not by our own feelings but by the word of God ie the gospel of Jesus Christ.
It must be taught to us!
We don't ever know without hearing, teaching of the gospel.
I actually started to tell you something that would enable you. Whew, that was close. :p

Yes, I'm aware of that, LoL.

Thanks for the invite. If I can I'll try to participate.
Actually, I was addressing @Jennifer Rogers who's a brand new member, and I remembered your recent post in Devin's thread and thought it would be excellent to share with her! I'm sure she would welcome you to contribute anything you feel would be useful to this thoughtful thread she just started!

:)

How can I choose to trust God when it hurts so much? How can I trust Him when I do not understand and struggle to grasp His mysterious ways and providence? Join me as we explore the reasons we should trust God.

0ocutaN.png

1. All things are possible with God

He knows the desires of your heart. If you trust Him with what you most desire, He will take care of it. He knows what is best for your life. Think again if you feel like your goals are hard to achieve or even impossible. Whatever it is, all you have to do is have faith.
“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who.” – Mark 9:23
Let's just put our trust in these words: "Because I know the plans I have for you." God declares: “plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope (Jer 29:11 HCSB)”.

2. Our pain and suffering have a purpose.

Every pain we carry has a purpose. It is a preparation for what is to come, for the greater challenges that are certain to come. We need to learn to trust God and rely on Him and His strength during our current seasons of grief to face greater challenges in the future.
God knows everything we are going through at this time and everything we will go through in the future. He knows the best way to handle any situation so that we get the best possible outcome, and we need to trust Him for that. We need to follow His way and trust Him to understand best because He knows.
“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:6

3. God knows what God does

God knows exactly what he wants for your life. He has a purpose for you and has planned everything. He knows who you will marry, how many children you will have, what job you will have, and every other detail of your life. He knows what you will do tomorrow, in the coming future. Do not doubt His plan, for He knows it all and has a perfect plan that He has laid out before. So your job is to keep trusting Him, the rest He will give you a proper answer.

4. God will not forsake us

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
How many times have you read this passage and have you believed it? You better believe it, because it's true.
There shouldn't even be a single doubt in your mind. God will never leave you nor forsake you because of that, you can trust God with all your heart (Proverbs 3:5-6). In this statement, God is making a double promise to us. He will not leave us and He will not forget us.

5. God's great love for you

God is love and all He does is for love (1 John 4:7-21). He is the very definition and embodiment of love.
Because God loves you, He will do anything to help you in your time of need. You can always trust Him because He cares about you. He knows what's best for you and He will give you the best - if you're willing to trust Him. You can trust Him with results after trying your best. You can trust Him that He will deliver you from your darkest times and that He will be there with you through life's storms.
When I listen for God and try to do what he tells me to do, he solves my problems. That seems reason enough for me to trust him.

Waiting on him

God formed Adam from the dust and gave him life by sharing His own breath (Genesis 2:7). Accordingly, humanity is unique among all God's creations, having both a physical body and an immaterial soul/spirit.
John 20:22 KJV
[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
This is the breath of God, Jesus being the first to receive.

@Jennifer Rogers interesting thread:

I had faith in God because I was told he existed as a child and was brought to church to learn about him. I have belief in God because I was baptized and confirmed and now feel the Holy Spirit. I know God exists because he has manifested himself to me with power.

Yes he does, he has saved my life several times that I can recall. Once I fell off a 100 foot cliff and landed in some sticker bushes growing out of the side of it at the top. I didn't fall, but it was snowing and we were sledding near it like idiots. As I saw my demise and began to slide towards the edge I felt this peace come over me, I knew I was going to die and was at peace somehow. As I found myself still alive I called up to my friends and they pulled me up to safety. It was God's peace that I felt (Galatians 5:22-23). He knew I would be safe and allowed it to happen.
