What was it that caused the human being so much trouble? Being created to be ruled by another, swallowed up by another's life, that is why a human being can go through what they go through with the sin nature. It is a domineering force to be reckoned with. Sin nature is so domineering that laws were put in place to keep it in subjection. How was the sin nature subjected to the law! By the mind, it was mind power (will) that had to rule over nature to keep nature in check so to speak. If sin nature is allowed to live and do it's bidding you have what Paul called a reprobate mind. When a mind allows the sin nature to do what it will do habitually grotesquely then you have a mind scriptures call reprobate with total disregard, reprobate.
A note here:
Believers cannot have a reprobate mind because they have a new nature (Christ in you nature). That nature will not be a sinning nature, when believers sin now it is because of the old mind, the old mind that has not been renewed in areas.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. - 1 John 3:9.
Believers will have areas of their mind that has been renewed also there is areas that have not been renewed. Sin will always come from the unrenewed mind now in believers because their nature is the in Christ nature or the nature of God in Christ. Peter uses the words "divine nature" to describe the new nature.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. - 1 John 1:8.
That is a soul-mind that needs renewed because sin happens with an unrenewed mind.
The mind does not need to try to keep the new nature from sinning because it is not a sinning nature. Now as believers the believer needs a mind that is compatible with the new Christ in you nature. Mind renewal by the scriptures is when you see Christ as life in the scriptures. So it becomes very apparent in the written word of God that you need a new mind to go with your new nature. Your old mind will become an opponent of your new in Christ nature life.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. - Romans 8:5-7.
