You ask: "These living souls, as spirits lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. How can a thousand years not come until after Christ returns since these faithful saints have LIVED and REIGNED with Christ in this time?"
The "living souls" of Rev ch20 are not Resurrected until Christ Returns/Second Coming = 1 Thess ch4 and Rev ch19
A.) When Christ Returns He brings with Him the living spirits/souls of those who died in Him = 1 Thess ch3 & ch4
B.) When Christ Returns He destroys the Antichrist with the Brightness of His Coming = 2 Thess ch2
C.) When Christ Returns we are Transformed into Immortal Bodies made in His Eternal Image = 1 Cor ch15 & 1 John 3:1-3
A thousand years equates to TIME! We both understand this, but you insist on putting a definitive limit on this time, then insist it shall not be until Christ comes again. But this does not agree with what John has written. How can martyred souls who LIVED and REIGNED with Christ a thousand years be according to you future, but according to John both past and present? Past because these martyred for faith have already lived, reigned and then physically died in this time. Future too because then John writes of others (vs6) blessed and holy, having part in the first resurrection, and overcome the second death who shall live with Christ during this same time, a thousand years.
You understand the physical resurrection of all who are dead and shall not be bodily resurrected until the last trumpet sounds an hour that is coming. Some of the physically dead when Christ returns will be bodily resurrected for life (caught up to be reunited with the spirit that returns with Christ together with those in Christ who are still physically alive at His coming), the rest of the dead will be bodily resurrected to stand before God at the GWTJ.
What you are lacking in understanding is what it means to have ETERNAL life through Christ's resurrection life. Christ very clearly explains to Nicodemus who also appeared to understand only that which is physical. Nicodemus thought Christ was speaking of physical birth when He said "Ye must be born again." Christ tells him and us a man must be born again without which he cannot see (know understand) or enter the kingdom of God.
John 3:3 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:5 (KJV) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
We cannot know or enter the kingdom of God through the flesh, but must be born of the Spirit, and this like the wind is not physically discerned, but must be spiritually discerned. We can only know/understand that we have been born again through His Spirit.
John 3:6-8 (KJV) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee,
Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth:
so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Christ is not speaking of earthly things, but of heavenly things. These things are only spiritually discerned when we believe in Christ, and whosoever believes will never perish but have (not will have) ETERNAL LIFE.
John 3:11-15 (KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven,
even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Paul explains how humans are physically alive but spiritually dead! That's what he means when he says "
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)". To be quickened together with Christ, is to have eternal life through Him. Our body, that which is physical is dead through sin, but our spirit is eternally alive through Christ when we have spiritual life through Him, and that life is ETERNAL in our spirit.
