Old Testament Versus New Testament
By: David Bowden

What’s the difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament?

The first thing to point out is that the word “testament” means “covenant.” So the real question is, what’s the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant?

The truth is that there are several differences. But the major difference, brought up by Jeremiah 31:31-34, is the heart.

The old covenant is the one given to Moses and the people of Israel after their exodus out of Egypt. This covenant came with a law. This law included the famous ten commandments. If Israel kept the law they would be allowed to dwell in God’s presence in relationship with him.

However, Israel never kept the covenant. They constantly broke God’s law.

Why couldn’t they keep the covenant? Because the law was outside them. It was not inside them.

The new covenant would be different. God would write the law of this covenant on his people’s hearts. It would be inside them.

Laws on the outside can’t change the inside. There must be a change on the inside to obey the law on the outside.

We try to change ourselves with outside influences all the time. Through all kinds of rules, disciplines, routines, and restrictions, we try to change our actions. We try to fight sin, become holy, and transform our behavior by laws exterior to ourselves. But this will never work.

Laws can’t change hearts.

So how does God use the new covenant to change our hearts? He fulfills all the requirements of the covenant for us in Jesus. Jesus died under the curse of the law that we earned and gave us the blessings of the covenant that he earned. He did this at the cost of his life on the cross. Such a sacrifice moves our hearts in a new way.

But it is not just by hearing this story of the Gospel that our hearts are changed. Something else has to happen. After all, the Israelites were saved from Egypt and their hearts remained hard toward God.

Something had to happen within us. That is why God gives us the Holy Spirit. The Spirit changes our hearts to actually believe the gospel, enjoy the gospel, and respond to God because of the Gospel.

The difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament is that the new covenant changes our hearts, so that we can finally obey God freely.

First thought: OT, you had to do it. NT, we get to freely do it, because God is just awesome and I am completely in love with Him.

I think the key verse for me is v.34: "And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, "Know Jehovah." For they shall all know Me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them."

This is an astounding concept with great implications. It means that every member of the body of Christ can contribute; to the teachings, to the ministry of the Spirit - no man is left out of ministry (1 Corinthians 12).

As for it's relation to sin... I'm still a little iffy on it, to tell you the truth, LoL. But I will say this, the Spirit of God will convict of sin in ways the Law cannot. The Law is something you can run from if you are not inclined to it, but you cannot run from your conscience, which is quickened by the Spirit of God when He comes to dwell within us. Maybe the most important thing under these circumstances is not to allow our conscience to become seared with a hot iron, and no longer be sensitive to God.

It is awesome how everyone has a part in ministry/gifted in God's kingdom.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out what God is saying, whether something is right or wrong. I wonder if during that time, if that is sin. Grateful to be forgiven, but there have been times I have been certain my conscience was saying "this is right" when in reality it was my feelings.

.
“The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? I, the Lord , search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.
Jeremiah 17:9‭-‬10 NASB1995

It is important to know the Word to test and approve all things, because the heart is deceitful above all else. It is important to go by the Word of God and not by feelings.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out what God is saying, whether something is right or wrong. I wonder if during that time, if that is sin. Grateful to be forgiven, but there have been times I have been certain my conscience was saying "this is right" when in reality it was my feelings.

Paul said something very interesting about this once:

1 Let a man so consider us as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am conscious of nothing against myself, but I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. (1 Corinthians 4:1-4).

It essentially means that just because our conscience may not be bothering us about something, this doesn't mean we aren't automatically not in the wrong. It just means that we aren't aware that we are. But the Lord will judge properly, whether we actually were in the wrong or not. I have justified myself for a number of things that looking back on it.... yeah, not so much room to justify myself after all, LoL. But then there is a scripture which also says, "What a man does by faith he does unto God," and also a scripture that says, "that servant who knew his master’s will and did not prepare himself or do according to his will shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know yet committed things deserving of stripes shall be beaten with few."

So the idea is to do our best to discern His will, and all the more certainly work to obey what we DO know is from the Lord. Those are the things we will be held more accountable for.
