Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. - John 5:39.

The scriptures, and only the scriptures; can turn the believer to Christ in them the hope of glory! They can confirm the action of God.. that good work. What he has done in you. Not what you can do for him.. but what he did in you. For in them you think you have eternal life.

Knowing what to read.. where to find life; is written. Rightly dividing the word of truth. Knowing what is given to you (in scripture), for the new life in you (eternal life).

Why did Jesus say this? Because He is the Resurrection and the Life. He Himself is Eternal Life, and when He comes to indwell the believer, the believer receives the gift of eternal life. And we find Jesus revealed in the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. He said so Himself in Luke 24.

But every Christian has the privilege -- as well as the responsibility -- to search the Scriptures, just like the Bereans did in apostolic times. God has already indicated that this is not easy work but hard work, and the student of the Word is supposed to be a "workman" -- a laborer -- digging out the truths found in the Word of God, and coming face to face with God and Christ.

However, one of the biggest failings of most churches is that no one is teaching Christians how to study the Word, and use all legitimate Bible study tools to arrive at the proper interpretation, with the help of the Holy Spirit. Also the majority of churches have abandoned the King James Bible and resorted to modern bible versions (which are all corrupted). Which means the the true Word of God in English is not being studied.

The Scriptures must be taken in their plain literal sense (unless there is good reason to see that a figure of speech is being used). But the Word of God is a living Word and the words of Christ are spirit and life, to be understood by the spirit. And unless one is prepared to connect all the related Scriptures, he or she will arrive at a false belief. We see this over and over again on Christian forums.
