This is a parable. The characters are not real and the circumstances relate to the Pharisees and the way they treated the ones whom they considered to be "lost". Jesus came to find those very ones and when he did, the favor that was previously enjoyed by the Jewish religious leaders was bestowed on the "lost sheep" who accepted Jesus. This is nothing to do with life after death. Its a story about trading places and one group losing God's favor, whilst the other found it.

And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

First of all Jesus said "paradise", not "heaven". Where was the first paradise?
The criminal hanging alongside Jesus had a last minute change of heart and asked for Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom and Jesus promised him a place in the earthly paradise to come when God's first purpose for this earth and man upon it will be restored. The thief will be among those 'unrighteous' ones resurrected by Jesus after his cleansing of this earth. (John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15)

Secondly, the comma should be after the word "today", not "thee" (you) because Jesus did not go anywhere for 40 days after his resurrection. So the thief was not in paradise that day at all......he would be in his grave until Jesus brought the blessings of the kingdom to this earth. (Revelation 21:2-4)

He was speaking to a congregation of people, not to any individual. As a body of Christians they were to safeguard their spirit by living their lives as Christ commanded them until he came to resurrect them.

Belief in the "everlasting fire" that Jesus taught us is not required for residency therein.
