    There are 9 spiritual gifts.
Tongues are the last on the list, or the least...coming in at #9.

Its rare to find the correct teaching, regarding this gift, so, here it is...

The Gift of tongues, is the gift of a foreign language....that you can't speak, but you are given the ability to speak, by God... = so that you can deal with those who do not understand your tongue.
This would primarily be a gift given to a Missionary, in the time of the Gentiles.
You can check this out in Acts 2, when Peter was speaking in foreign languages, (tongues) and those who heard him said..>"we hear in OUR Language".
    That's the "gift of Tongues".

A "prayer language", is not the gift of tongues.
Charismatics do not understand this so they teach "the infilling of the Spirit..with tongues as the sign", incorrectly as the gift of tongues, when in fact its a prayer language that the NT specifies as : "groanings that can't be uttered"..

So, if you have a prayer language, you are not "speaking in tongues", you are speaking "mysteries to god", for "self edification".

If your pastor does not understand this, then find a new Church were they do.
There is no need to keep sitting and listening to a theological boob who fakes spirituality, and is only concerned with getting your tithe and keeping you in spiritual diapers for 60 yrs.....Exactly as he or she is in their's for 60 yrs.

Paul says to pray..(seek earnestly) for the ""best GIFT", which would be the supernatural "word of knowledge" ..GIFT...., or the #1 on the list.

Tongues are no longer a gift for men. That was an apostolic gift. The time of apostolic gifts is over with.

You're comment is related to this verse......"when that which is perfect is come,""". 1 Corinthians 13.

That is the typical Baptist, and similar Theology, point of view., as they teach that the BIBLE, the NT, is the "perfect that will come" and then the signs shall cease. They also teach that the Apostles ended with John, ect.
Other Denoms teach that its the "Holy Spirit" who is come which is the "perfect" and once that happened, then the signs and apostles are no longer.

I dont teach those particular Theologies, and i dont disagree with them.

What i do, is explain what the "Gift of Tongues" actually is, VS.. the "prayer language"......as its more important to know the difference, then to argue about the other which you posted.

See, if a person is a Pentecostal-Charismatic-Word of Faith, then its 99% certain that they have been taught the lie that "tongues" is/are a prayer language.
And once they find out that its not, then they can realize that their denomination is carnal and obsessed with chasing "the infilling" and "tongues' when in fact this false idea of "tongues" they've been misled to believe.... is not the correct understanding.
So, once a Pentecostal-Charismatic-Word of Faith, comes to see this as true,..that they have been misled and taught a LIE>... then they can get OUT of that carnal mess and into something truth based, and God can actually begin to show them His word and use them.

    So is my younger Brother.

He began his born again life at about 8 yrs old, as a Assembly Of God.
He was a "royal ranger", and was totally active in this denom, till he moved to Nashville to attend and graduate from Belmont UV.
He was in a "Christ Church" service, on a Sunday morning in about '95, and they had a guest speaker that Sunday morning, a MTW missionary.
God called my brother to be a Missionary, in the pew that morning, and he never looked back.
He went to church that morning as a member and left as a "called out one".
He was at that time working for H&P as a middle manager, making about 100G a year, and gave his "2 weeks notice" and just walked away right to the mission field and has been there ever since.
    God is good.
Met his wife during a mission trip, had 3 girls, and has been building people, churches, for Jesus, ever since.

He's builds churches and trains missionaries for : MTW

He's been in the Ukraine with His wife, who is also a Missionary, since '1998.

Interpretation of tongues is the last in the list and is equal to prophecy. It is also an office in the church given by Jesus. You are comparing rubies to diamonds - both precious gems.

It is part of the New Covenant. Are you in another covenant? I'm in the New Covenant of the Bible and have been given most of the gifts of the Spirit. They are for this covenant until we see Him face to face.

Have you been baptized? Mark 16:16-18 tells us that those who believe and have been baptized will show signs.

I used to be just like you and was a Cessationist. I'm sure glad I experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You don't know what you are missing. There is so much more. And if you are still a lifelong sinner, you better confess your sin and believe that Jesus will cleanse you of all unrighteousness before it is too late. No one with sin in them will inherit eternal life. 1 John 3:1-3. Revelation 22:11

Only 9? Just multiply by 2 and add 2. That would be closer.
    I would agree with this.

I'll bet the Spirit brought back the charismata just to let us know He's still around. And to annoy the Baptists and Presbyterians.

Really? I do believe you are wrong. The need remains until that which is perfect [complete] is come! It is not an unopened, unread, unquickened Bible! When we stop needing tongues will we not also stop needing knowledge?

"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect [complete] is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." I Cor 13:8-10

Who already has that which is perfect [complete]? The apostle Paul apparently did not when he wrote this as he included himself in the pronoun, we.

Jesus speaks of the "perfect"[complete] when he tells us to be "perfect" [complete] here:

"Be ye therefore perfect, [complete] even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." [complete] Matthew 5:48

Jesus himself became perfect [complete] did it here as a man tempted in all points are we are [see Heb 4:15] when he overcame the world of temptations within himself as a man:

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." John 16:33

If we still ever sin at all, then we, like the Apostle Paul at the moment he wrote I Cor. 13:8-10 quoted above, have also not yet overcome the world of our own temptations. Did not Jesus open the Way to God with his sacrifice and did God provide the means to accomplish it through the power of the Holy Spirit available now to whosoever will? [see Acts 2:37-39]

So then if we were already overcomers as Jesus was, would it not be the then for us to be that perfect [complete] in that we never sin any more at all? Notice when Jesus overcame the world? It was before he went to the cross. [See John 17:11]

Knowledge remains and so do tongues!

So if I speak in the tongue of angels, the only purpose is to minister to angels?

"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." I Cor 12:7

"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds [different kinds] of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" I Cor 12:10

That is to say, diverse or different kinds of tongues, apparently with diverse or different purposes!
