:christianflag:I have been very interested in the Leviathan ever since reading the passages in Job describing it in detail. I agree with what christchild said in the thread about the dinosaur described by Job; this simply has to be a dragon? It specifically states that it breathes fire. I have heave heard that some portray the great leviathan as a hippo or a whale, but the description given by Job makes me think that those believers havent looked far enough into the description to be making suggestions of ehat it may have been. i think that we as humans have looked at dragons as fairy tale creatures for so long that we just automatically assume that when it says "fire comes from its mouth" that we should assume it is referring to something else. I am convinced that this is a sea dragon that, of course, was killed. Being the only one that god created (because god destroyed the leviathans mate) it died out.:christianflag:

It's funny that you bring this up. I'm curious. If you read all of Job 41, why would you want to be called Leviathan? It's an obvious parallel to evil. Yes, I do think it was a real creature the Lord was speaking to Job about. Some have called it a "sea dinosaur" and others have called it something like the Loch Ness Monster. I have also heard it referred to as a dragon. I don't know exactly what it was, but it has been compared to satan because he is called the king over all the children of pride (verse 34) and sorrow dances before him (verse 22). I have never heard it associated with anything good. My cousin did a study on this. I'll have to ask her more about it.
In psalms 104, 26 is states that there are the ships and the leviathan you created to play in it. He is swimmin beside ships. I wonder why he is desribed so negatively and mosterous in job, when in psalms it stated he was created to play in the sea.

well that is something i was about to bring up, if u type this into wikipedia(and yes i know never to trust this) it referrs to another book that tells of how god destroyed leviathans mate because the reproucing of the creature would dominate earth. /Kriss/So do you think that the actual leviathan creature that god created is a demonic figure, or is he just a victim of a metaphor due to his monstorous appearance?
According to a midrash, the leviathan was created on the fifth day (Yalkut, Gen. 12). Originally God produced a male and a female leviathan, but lest in multiplying the species should destroy the world, He slew the female, reserving her flesh for the banquet that will be given to the righteous on the advent of the Messiah (B. B. 74a).

I think it was just a dragon type creature that God uses as the metaphor The same as today if we call someone a snake we mean it in a negative context butin nature snakes serve a good purpose they eat rodents. God uses a different Hebrew word when calls Satan a dragon though the description is the same as the above I gave you. The word has more negative connotation it might be like saying a Viper instead of a snake they are both snakes but we know one is poisonous. So that would lead me to believe that Leviathan was just a dragon creaturethat is used for a metaphor not that it in itself was demonic,
Midrash, yalkut...is this from the hebrew text maybe?I went back and read the gen description. It does say every animal was producing more of its own kind. That somewhat contradicts wiki. It doesn't say all animals reproduced sexually. Some could have been asexual and thus wouldn't need a mate.And it also suggests God made a mistake in making the mate and then having to fix His error.When I first read the wiki account, I assumed it meant God killed the mate before they ever had a chance to reproduce. But that isn't necessarily true.I'm not arguing. Just very fascinated by this. Thanks!

I agree that it is definitely a metaphor/name for Satan like the serpent but psalms would also have us believe it was also a real creature would you agree with this whirlwind?

Reading [Psalms 74] and [104] I don't think so Kriss. Until yesterday morning I did but not any longer. It's funny, but this morning I listened to a program and the preacher commented on Leviathan and said he had received two questions about Behemouth and Leviathan that day. He believes Leviathan means "crocodile"...so I may be really, really off base here.I see Leviathan as being false preachers under his supervision, those that teach Satan's lies.Psalms 74:13 Thou didst divide the sea by Thy strength: Thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. Our Father did "divide the sea" to create the continents. This could also mean "divide the sea" as in divide the people, the different races in their different countries. The word dragon means pretty much the same as Leviathan - sea monster, dragon, serpent, whale. 14.Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, And gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.Leviathan broken into pieces - into priests, preachers, teachers of Satan and their words are the "meat," the supposed words of God, that they feed to those in the wilderness.
