A topic we have for our next bible study... "What are deamons? Who are they? Where do they come from? What is their purpose? In what ways do they manifest/affect our lives?"A first response was that they are some of the fallen angels that fell with Satan. A very knowledgeable leader amoung us said this is incorrect though. Angels have their own bodies and thus are not able to take possesion of another being. They can have huge influences on them but are not able to reside in another body. Deamons however, have no body of their own and must occupy another body in order to manifest or achieve what they desire to do.Any suggested answers to the first questions? Thanks for your insights.:bible:

Revelation 12:9, "The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him." Ephesians 6:12, "Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."James 4:7,"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Yeah go to your local library and ask them if they have a book called "Hostage to the Devil" that will answer your questions or scare the hell out of you one of the two.

Demons usally want to stay as far away from a true believer with strong faith as they can get but if you falter have doubts and do not know the power you were given by Christ you can be attacked but you do not have to worry.God gives you power over them if you know this and trust it with all your heart a demon wont want anything to do with you.Luke 10:17-19 "And the seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’ And he said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. ‘Behold, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy and to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and nothing shall injure you.’

but say you don't know anything about demonic possession... say you just became a Christian like a few months ago or something... is it still possible?

Mary, the wife of Jesus? Spiritually she is as a part of the church."When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first." Luke 11:24-26 (ESV)"and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out," Luke 8:2 (ESV)"Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. And the second and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. Afterward the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife. And Jesus said to them, 'The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.'" Luke 20:29-36 (ESV)

I think so...if your faith is weak it don't matter how much Holy Spirit you have you are vulnerable to demon attacks. You are filled in the Holy Spirit only if you seek it. Sad to say some do not and even those that do are still open to the corruption of demonic forces....

Nope. The Holy Spirit is not a "girly man" -- or should I say "girly spirit". If He is dwelling within you (ie, you are a Christian) -- No demon is coming in. The Holy Spirit is more manly than Chuck Norris. He looks in the direction of an unholy spirit, and they are ready to go...Luke 8:26-29 26They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" 29For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. However,it is possible that a Christian can be influenced by Demonic powers (as explained below). However, you can't be possessed by one. However, do keep in mind that GOD HIMSELF dwells within you. Don't sell the Holy Spirit short.http://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-demon-possessed.html"The Bible does not explicitly state whether a Christian can be possessed by a demon. However, since a Christian is indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9-11; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19), it would seem extremely unlikely that the Holy Spirit would allow a demon to possess the same person He is indwelling. While we recognize that this is a controversial issue, we strongly hold to the belief that a Christian cannot be possessed by a demon. We believe there is a sharp difference between being possessed by a demon, and being oppressed / influenced by a demon. Demon possession involves a demon having direct control over the thoughts and/or actions of a person(Luke 4:33-35; 8:27-33; Matthew 17:14-18). Demon oppression / influence involves a demon or demons attacking a person spiritually and/or encouraging him/her into sinful behavior (1 Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7). You will notice that in all the New Testament passages dealing with spiritual warfare, we are never told to cast a demon out of a believer (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are told to resist the devil (1 Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7), not to cast him out."

4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. 1 John 4:4This board has some people who say, "the Holy Spirit can't do this, or He can only do this". Yea right. The Holy Ghost can do whatever He so desires, any time of day. The Holy Spirit is much bigger and stronger than any of us --- little pipsqueaks. Also, as the Word says --- God is greater than the devil. What can I say, that is what I believe. I have never been afraid of demons or unclean spirits --- why --- because the Holy Ghost has made me His home, and He is not going to share His home with some second rate demon.I would rather face a demon than a gunman any day. The Holy Spirit can handle the demon, but I have to face the gunman myself.

Yes, I can help a little and make some suggestions. Demons are indeed fallen angels that rebelled with Satan. They have glorious, angelic type bodies, and as such do not really want to posses people. I think the reference you are making about the type of "demons" that do posses people, I heard an interesting theory to that (well, probably more than a theory). It's called the Genesis 6 incident where demonic entities mated with human women and their offspring were abominable hybrids. It's these entities that may want to posses a human being considering they once had a body of their own, but like other people they died and wander around trying to find a body to reside in. You will find such stories in Jewish apocryphal literature and these fallen angels (demons) taught early man different things. Sometimes they are referred to as "watchers". They even had names for them such as Tamiel, Amazarak, and whatnot. In the everyday world, these same beings seem to be the source of occult occurrences such as ghosts, shadow people, poltergeists, Sidhe (a general term for trolls, gnomes, pixies, elves, etc) and yes, even those gray aliens.

Ummmmmm. Be careful here. While what you say regarding possession vs the Holy Spirit is essentially correct, demons and entities can still wreck havoc, and without God a human hasn't a chance. Yes, a gunman is scary, but whose behind him?Demons are very, very powerful entities. Stay away from occult and haunted houses. [IMG]

Love is never about the use of force, if we use force we repel so it's going against the law of love."From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force." Matthew 11:12 (ESV)"But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil." Luke 6:35 (ESV)"and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure;" 1 Corinthians 4:12 (ESV)"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them." Romans 12:14 (ESV)"But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you." Luke 6:27-28 (ESV)

What I know is this. We are against powers and principalities that we know very little about. Those powers and principalities seem to focus against you as soon as you choose Jesus Christ as your saviour. These powers want to erode your faith and confidence in Jesus. Can they do it? I think all of us have had moments of doubt and maybe small moments of unfaithfulness. It's the coming back time and time again that is important. To know that Jesus forgives you.

You have a point good explanation. But to say that as Christians we are infallible to such powers is a little ridiculous don't you think?
