Definitely support whatever my daughter decides because this is her journey.

@VictoryinJesus I guess the tattoo artist has become the person that so many ppl go to who draws out their sense of skin elegance which in Christians is often faith based in designs, which can become seemingly rather compelling.

soul man seemed to express it quite strongly and encouragingly as a parent:

my girls .. were young when they started, especially my youngest. .. My oldest has a new really good artist, she wants us to get matching tats .. Tattooing in our day is big, if you need or want a tattoo, that is what you should have written in the biggest boldest lettering you can get. Stare at it daily, study it daily, it never gets old. It is the only message you need that flows from scripture in full depth of understanding for anyone that will pick it up and want to know something about it.

All my kids have tattoos.. My Navy son has an American flag with an eagle, and a Spartan/Gladiator thingy. My middle has a Canadian flag- from a Canadian National Team he represented, my youngest something with mountains he got to match with a girlfriend he no longer has-- (the girlfriend that is, the tattoo he still has lol) and my two daughters both have something significant of their children (little birdies and such).

@Mr E Seems anyway like it's become something that young ppl when reaching 18 or thereabouts simply expect to go do.

There's probably a case (particulaly if their kids are a bit naive) for some parents even to take their 16/17 year olds to a tattoo parlor to learn and be advised of how planning for it is important, in readiness to turning 18; and especially for young Christians this can be important because so many young Christians seem to get Bible verses, etc., tattooed.

All the Christian young ppl with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have talked seem to have had them done for witness tool purposes, anyway, so the value of good planning and knowing about artist professionalism would seem somewhat compelling.

@Taken I imagine the tattooee would have found it painful but thoroughly worth it, right? :)

You know, I still place tats as individuals decisions. Worth it, would be something the individual enduring the pain and getting the tat could claim. Not me. I am a bystander in that scenario.

.... I would not judge anyone.

Marilyn.

Hi @Marilyn C

I'm thinking also for example of a truly converted woman with a tattoo of an ex-bf's name; rather than being condemned to seeing it every day, she might go to a good tattoo artist to have the name (e.g., BILL) changed to something that was more reflective of her current spiritual state (e.g., BIBLE); a skilled tattoo artist can often work wonders in such a way.

(You maybe see the sort of thing that I mean?)

Hi farouk,

I hear what you say, and people make their own decisions. It is not a matter of salvation so I`m not concerned with it. I also don`t see tattoos where I live in the country.

I don't know about my daughter in law she may not be done.

@RLT63 Thanks for your recent post.

It used to be very much a man thing (and still is).

But now also it's not unusual for women (including professed Christian women) to get more tattoos - done with a lot of confidence - than professing Christian men do. (You may in fact find that your DIL is not yet finished using an artist for inkings.)

FYI:

I have debated about getting a cross tattoo of some sort of 1689 tattoo that isn't too gaudy. ..She [wife] actually has three tattoos. I have two, so she has more than me. .. Actually, last year she got two tats the same day. One is ‘faith’ and ‘believe’.

It seems to be the right choice for a lot of Christians out there.

@dhh712 Some ppl try to claim the following:

Cachalot said:
Tattoos are unlady-like. That is why I would never have one.

One can perhaps dislike tattoos, but to try to maintain that they are supposedly unladylike is somewhat untenable indeed.

What other posters have said is likely far more accurate.

I was told it was addictive, but for me it was not. .. I don't regret it.. .. Probably 75% of the congregation have tattoos, including myself and the Pastor .. I have a tattoo, I am not ashamed of it, but it has no bearing on my salvation. ..I also agree that it makes a statement of freedom in Christ. .. We got a lot of folks inked in our Church. Myself, the Pastor, his daughter and grand daughter included. Now, even my wife

almost every young girl I know has some sort of tatoo.
Even those very conservative types.

My wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite Bible verse and mine and I'm sure other conversations have arisen also because she - likely even joyfully - went to the tattoo parlor.

Back a bit:
My daughter is 56 and just got her first ones @farouk

One on each wrist with her children's names.

@Pearl So is your daughter still the only family member that is tattooed so far? children's names inked - or even Bible refs. - is increasingly a widespread option that is pursued these days.

My daughter is the oldest of my three children and has tattoos of her children's names on her wrists. My son who is the youngest has quite few tattoos - a celtic ring round his arm, 'Only God can judge me' down the other arm and some sort of wings across his shoulders. He was the first to get inked and to be honest I was easy with it. It was his choice.

PS: @VictoryinJesus

And like you maybe implied or acknowledged, being prepared just to take the plunge and undergoing a well chosen inking seems to be what nice young ladies so widely do nowadays.

It's likely that they, as new found adults, would calculate that a bit of pain would be well worth it for something that can really radiate wholesomeness:

Dr. Beth S., MD, said: "Embracing the pain For many tattoo enthusiasts, the pain is an important part of the process. Controlling the pain is less important than feeling it, accepting it, and embracing the endorphin rush that pain brings.
If it's your first tattoo, the pain can be a rite of passage. Some people see it as a fair price to pay to wear permanent, beautiful, meaningful art. Some even enjoy it as an important part of the tattooing.." From 'Controlling the pain with tattooing', https://tattoos.lovetoknow.com/Controlling_the_Pain

That is how most new tattoo artist apprentice, by giving free tattoos as practice.
I would get all sorts of tattoos if I could afford it. I love tattoos. If I got tattoos now being middle aged, they might not be blue blob when I am old lol.

Hi @Mantis Yes, and as someone with veteran skills for it, you would know of course that both for those who give ink and the much larger company of those who receive it, it is a gradual process of becoming acclimatized to it - a consistent dedication is what should characterize it if this is the aim.

For example, as regards Ryan Ashley, whose gentle gray cursive style has become distinguished as something of her trademark, it must actually have involved a huge amount of effort and honed skill to be at the position where she now says:

"I'm very light-handed; I'm a lady tattooer and I tattoo like a lady".

(Source: Best of Ryan Ashley, Ink Master, Season 8, Youtube.)

I must admit I don't like all her designs without exception, but her sheer gentle, understated skill in gray is truly amazing.

Bible verses in a Ryan Ashley style would make quite some combination.

Anyway, generationally, it's what they do now.

And all the young ppl with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have talked have seemingly gone through with the inkings for testimony tool reasons. (In a sense, it's heartening to see the young ppl's confidence that glows, in the Scriptures.)

@Marilyn C Thanks for the 'like' just now; and I think that in some ways it would be good if more Christians trained and worked as tattoo artisits, given the potential for faith based designs - while acknowledging that some other Christians might disagree (the relevance again of Romans 14, surely...)

I know of one Theology Student pursuing his doctorate that has some passage that means so much to him that he located the oldest manuscript fragment containing it and had the 3" by 5" manuscript in Koine Greek tattooed on his forearm. It is a big chunk of Greek text in a paragraph on his arm. He can read it and is happy to talk about it with anyone that asks.
@atpollard

All the young ppl with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have spoken seem to have received their ink injectings as a witness tool.

It seems that having such inkings carried out has become rather important to many young Christians, male and female.

Someone wrote this in relation to a missions trip in which she participated:

From my last trip everyone got a scripture tattoo..Some meaningful scriptures. One girl said she was so thankful .. realizing she could relate the tattoo to her life..I had that tattoo planned out for nearly a year (11months) .. Maybe next year when I go back (these trips are going to be regular every 4 or so months trips) I will get another... Maybe ..One guy decided last minute but everyone literally spent hours on their phone that day looking up verses and verse tattoos ..They are meaningful to them

Seems like for many Christian young men and women it's what is done now.

While Christians using them for evangelism, I personally don't have a problem with, believers should not mark up their bodies with "art" This is a grey7 area IMNSHO and should be tread in very carefully.

@Ronald Nolette It's what they seem to do now, anyway, and once Christian young ppl are adults in the end it's their responsibility as to how it turns out; good, bad or indifferent, I guess; FYI, about young ppl on a missions trip:
