I quoted 1 verse and you were right to say there is more to salvation than believing. Here are 10 steps that require a change of heart. First we need to :-
1.) Hear the “good news” (i.e. the gospel) of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:14)
2.) Realize we are a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
3.) Have faith.
Hebrews 11:6; “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Acts 8:37; Mark 16:16; John 8:24)
4.) Repent of our sins.
(Luke 13:3,5; Acts 2:38; Mark 10:15)
My friend, “God . . . commandeth all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This repentance is a change of mind that agrees with God that one is a sinner, and also agrees with what Jesus did for us on the Cross.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
5.) Confess faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 8:36-37; Romans 10:9)
In Acts 16:30-31, the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas: “ . . . ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved . . . .’ ”
6.) Put our trust in Jesus.
“But God loved you so much He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear your sin and die in your place. “ . . . He hath made Him [Jesus, Who knew no sin] to be sin for us . . . that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus had to shed His blood and die. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev. 17:11). “ . . . without shedding of blood is no remission [pardon]” (Hebrews 9:22).
“ . . . God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12).
7.) Believe Jesus Christ is the son of God. “So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
8.) Be baptized (in water) for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:37-41; 1Peter 3:21; John 3:3-5; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:3-8; Colossians 2:12; Galatians 3:26-27; Mark 16:15-16; Acts 8:34-39; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 4:5)
9.) Follow Jesus for the rest of your life. (No falling away. Growing cold would not be backsliding.)
10.) The promise.
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12).
.
I find it odd some would call this adding to Jesus, when this is simply following Jesus.
For me its like getting a poster about a concert and then claiming you have gone and experienced everything when you have only the advertising to the event.
Taking away from the cross is the power He has in our hearts, and the call to obedience and love which follows.
As soon as one says, obedience after the cross does not testify to the lack of reality in ones heart today, these people are probably lost.
The problem with punishing the flesh in striving to live righteously, is understanding sin, motivation and emotions, is just the beginning. Thinking a few words spoken, or ceremonies followed is knowing love and reality in Christ is just delusional. And rejecting it all for a token faith, with no reality is just as bad, it is abandoning everything love and responsibility stands for.
A classic dilemma is defending ones own property or defending societies property. We have the power to give away our own possessions etc and choose how we deal with the violent man, but to defend the poor and defenceless is part of our ministry.
So being saved means we follow and obey, but in following and obeying we are demonstrating the work in our hearts free given by Christ. And Christs work is to enable this to be possible, or else it is all a farce of who holds the right poster to get into heaven and nothing about the heart and love. Not surprisingly those who hold this position, hate talking about love and the heart, because they cannot cope with the reality they are missing Jesus and His presence working through them. God bless you
