Jesus tells us to repent (Matthew 4:17). Isn't that good enough? He also told us we need to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48).

Christ previously performed the act of baptism not because he needed to do it as a real sinner. He did it as his open display and signature to his Father and creation, that he accepted his impending role as the anointed one and accepted his Father's work and mission to become the perfect human sacrifice for his Father, and us of of course. This is how we now have righteousness with God.
