Paul said in Romans 8, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death."

What is the Law of sin?

The law of sin in the above phrase is not the Law or a law found in the Book of the Law or of the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments. Most people don't understand this text, so if you think it is, you are not alone. Please follow along.

In context Paul says that he does what he doesn't want to do because sin dwells in him in Rom 7:20. After saying this he says in context to it in verse 21, "I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me."

In other words not being able to control himself (ourselves) because of the indwelling sin is the law he found. This is brought out even further by the next two verses.

Paul says that he delights in the Law of God in relation to the good that he wants to do. But then he says he sees ANOTHER law in his members. This OTHER law that he says he found, the law that when he would do good evil is present with him. It is through this law he does what he would not, because of the sin that dwells in him. He as we can't help ourselves.

O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me (us) from this body of death that has sin dwelling in it?

Then because of the good that Paul wants to do He thanks God through Jesus Christ that he serves the Law of God with His mind. But there is a contrast in his flesh that he can not do what he would. He is in captivity, serving the law of sin in and with his flesh.

However there is therefore NOW no condemnation to us who are in Christ Jesus he continues in chapter 8. We who walk after the Spirit, His Spirit and not after the flesh, the sin that dwells in it. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin, the law that he found and is, the law that when we would do good evil is present with us. The law that we do what we would not, because of the sin that dwells in us and the result of it is death. For the wages of sin is death. (Rom 6:23) For what the law, the law of God that we serve with our minds could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh that had sin dwelling in it, God sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:That the righteousness of the law of God might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit of Christ Jesus whom we are in. And He in us that the world might believe.

Deut 30:10 If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
Deut 30:11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
Deut 30:12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
Deut 30:13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

A little confusing, I see you have both laws or I think that's what I see. Paul talks about two laws, one is animal sacrificial law and the Commandments. Paul says in Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. In other words if there is no law there is no sin. Sin is not imputed or no blame can be accredited to any person when there is no law. Now, let’s see what Sin is according to the Bible in I John 3:4 it states, "whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."

So the law that we are free of goes back to the days of Moses. Let's begin by taking a look at both of the laws and how they worked together. We will see there were two laws given to Moses, they were the commandments and the sacrificial law. Watch how they worked together.


And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them: (Leviticus 4:1-2) The law in the scriptures above is the commandments.


Notice something else very important in these two scriptures. It states, "if a soul shall sin through ignorance." Notice that the scripture did not says on purpose. Why? There is no sacrifice for a sin that is committed willfully. Let's find out what was to be done if a person committed a sin against the Lord unintentionally. Let's skip down to the 27th verse and take a look at the second law (which is the sacrificial law).


And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty; Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering. And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar. (Leviticus 4:27-30)


When the common people sinned through ignorance and it came to their knowledge, what did they have to do? They brought an offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for their sin which they had committed, then the priest would offer the animal to the Lord. Think about this for a moment. If an animal was killed for a person that committed sin, what will happen to us today if we a trespass against the Lord? Since Jesus died for our Sin we have no need of this law.

The law of sin and death is the carnal mind. ( the carnal mind was all people that could not be subject to the law of God)

They in the flesh cannot please God. ( all who are without the Spirit of God/of Christ, in them)

The testimony to please God was had by Enoch.

By faith we please God, coming to God believing He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that DILLIGENTLY seek Him.

Pleasing your neighbour to edification, for his good, is believing in and following after Christ, who pleased not Himself. ( THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED THEE, FELL ON ME.)

Enoch prophesied saying, the Lord comes with ten thousand of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to CONVINCE among them of ALL THEIR UNGODLY DEEDS WHICH THEY HAVE UNGODLY COMMITED, and of ALL THEIR HARD SPEECHES WHICH UNGODLY SINNERS HAVE SPOKEN AGAINST HIM....the reproaches of those who reproached the Father/judgement upon all, their ungodly deeds and all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken AGAINST HIM.)

That would be the law ( sin) we are set free from.

When we lived in Adam, we died. ( robbing, stealing, TAKING WHAT WE SHOULD NOT TAKE.)

Christ pays our debt, ( WE SHALL BE SAVED BY HIS LIFE) and takes the whole sentence on Himself. ( He was manifested to take away OUR SINS/nailing the accusations WRITTEN AGAINST US, to HIs cross.)



Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

For example, if I rob a bank, I go to prison.
God released the prisoners, opening the blind eyes, from the prison, them that sat in darkness out of the prison house.

He ( through the blood of the everlasting covenant) said to the prisoners, go forth, to them that sat in darkness. Feeding in their ways, their pastures in all high places ( heaven, and out of the pit/hell, where there was no water. Giving HIs blood and water. John 19:34)

Then we are shown, He was taken from prison, and from judgement, cut off from the land of the living, for the transgression ( crimes) of His people...


Isaiah 42:7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Isaiah 49:9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.

Zechariah 9:11 As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.

Isaiah 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.



Jesus then preaches what He was about to do. ( so we believe in the kingdom of heaven before He fulfils these things He came to do)

Two types of debtors, some who love Him more for HIs same forgiveness on them, and some who love Him less for forgiving them their debts. ( Matthew 6:12.)

Jesus tells of that judgement on all HIs servants. The servants cannot pay the debt, the Lord forgives them the debt.

But the wicked servants, do not believe in the kingdom of heaven, ( to forgive others debts, as we were forgiven) and should have had COMPASSION, on their fellows, EVEN AS HE HAD PITY ON THEM.

Christ released all from prison/darkness/unbelief, by the blood of the everlasting covenant, ( PURCHASED THE CHURCH OF GOD WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.) then went and preached to the spirits which were in prison. ( went to the prison, and payed their debts and released them, from that darkness and place of no water/no Spirit.)



John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
